Chapter 8Op-amp Active filter circuits
Filter frequency responses High / Lowpass filters Band-pass / Band-reject filters
2
Active filters Filters are circuits that capable of passing signals with certain
selected frequencies while rejecting signals with other frequencies. This property is called SELECTIVITY. Passive filters are collections of RLC circuits to perform frequency
selection WITH LOW SELECTIVITY and WITHOUT GAIN Active filters use TRANSISTORS or OP-AMPS combined with
passive RC, RL, or RLC circuits. The active devices provide voltage gain and the passive circuits
provide frequency selectivity.
3
Active filters Active filters using op-amps and RC circuits, are used for
signal processing
4
System Application Preview The FM stereo carrier signals frequency range from
88 MHz to 108 MHz. In frequency modulation, the frequency of the carrier is
varied in proportion to the amplitude and frequency of the modulating audio signal.
The filter circuits are part of the channel separation circuits that can be applied in the FM system to separate out the audio signals that go to the left and right channel speakers.
5
BASIC FILTER RESPONSES Filters are categorized by the manner in which the output
voltage varies with the frequency of the input voltage. The four basic categories of active filters are:
LOW-PASS HIGH-PASS BAND-PASS BAND-STOP
6
Low-Pass Filter Response A low-pass filter passes frequencies from DC to fc and
significantly attenuates all other frequencies. The critical frequency, fc (also called the cutoff frequency)
defines the end of the passband and is normally specified at the point where the response drops - 3 dB (70.7%)
Following the passband is a region called the transition region that leads into a region called the stopband.
7
Low-Pass Filter Response Actual filter responses depend on the number of poles,
a term used with filters to describe the number of RC circuits contained in the filter.
8
Basic Low-pass Filter The most basic low-pass filter is a simple RC circuit consisting of
just one resistor and one capacitor; the output is taken across the capacitor.
This basic RC filter has a single pole, and it rolls off at - 20 dB/decade beyond the critical frequency.
The -20 dB/decade roll-off rate of a basic RC filter means that at a frequency of 10 fc, the output will be - 20 dB (10%) of the input.
9
Multiple-pole filters A filter that has a steeper transition region is necessary to
add additional circuitry to the basic filter.
10
Multiple-pole low-pass filters Combining an op-amp with frequency-selective circuits,
filters can be designed with roll-off rates of -40, -60, or more dB/decade.
Filters that include one or more op-amps in the design are called ACTIVE FILTERS.
These filters can optimize the roll-off rate and phase response. The more poles the filter uses, the steeper its transition, there for higher selectivity.
11
High-Pass filter Response A hi-pass filter significantly attenuates or rejects all
frequencies below fc and passes all frequencies above fc.
A simple RC circuit high-pass filter
taking the output across the resistor
12
Multiple-pole hi-pass filters Responses that are steeper than -20 dB/decade in the
transition region are also possible with active high-pass filters.
13
Band-Pass Filter Response A band-pass filter passes all signals lying within a band
between a lower-frequency limit and an upper-frequency limit and essentially rejects all other frequencies that are outside this specified band.
The bandwidth (BW) is defined as the difference between the upper critical frequency (fc1) and the lower critical frequency (fc2).
The critical frequencies response curve is 70.7%(-3dB) of its maximum.
14
Band-Pass Filter Response The frequency in the middle of the passband is called the
center frequency (f0), defined as the geometric mean of the critical frequencies.
15
Quality Factor The quality factor (Q) of a band-pass filter is the ratio of the
center fre quency to the bandwidth.
The value of Q is the selectivity of a band-pass filter. The higher the value of Q, the narrower the bandwidth and the better the selectivity for a given value of f0.
16
Band-Stop filter Response The band-stop filter, also known as notch, band-reject, or
band-elimination filter. Frequencies within
a certain bandwidth ARE REJECTED, and frequencies out-side the bandwidth ARE PASSED.
17
Filter Response Characteristics Filter response can be tailored to have either a Butterworth,
Chebyshev, or Bessel characteristic. These characteristics is identified by the shape of the
response curve, and each has an advantage in certain applications.
Butterworth, Chebyshev, or Bessel response characteristics can be realized with most active filter circuit configurations by proper selection of certain component values
18
Three Response Characteristics For Low-pass Filter Response
19
Butterworth Characteristic The Butterworth characteristic provides a very flat amplitude
response in the passband and a roll-off rate of -20 dB/decade/pole. The phase response is not linear, and the phase shift (thus, time
delay) of signals passing through the filter varies nonlinearly with frequency.
Butterworth response are normally used when all frequencies in the passband must have the same gain.
The Butterworth response is often refered to as a maximally flatresponse.
20
Chebyshev Characteristic The Chebyshev response characteristic are useful when a
rapid roll-off is required because it provides a roll-off rate greater than - 20 dB/decade/pole.
This type of filter response is characterized by overshoot or ripples in the passband (depending on the number of poles) and an even less linear phase response than the Butterworth.
21
Bessel Characteristic The Bessel response exhibits a linear phase characteristic. The phase shift increases linearly with frequency. The result is almost no overshoot on output with pulse input. Filters with the Bessel response are used for filtering pulse
waveforms without distorting the shape of the waveform.
22
The Damping Factor The damping factor (DF) of an active filter circuit
determines which response characteristic the filter exhibits either a Butterworth, Chebyshev, or Bessel response.
The amplifier and feedback are connected in a non inverting configuration with a filter section.
The damping factor is determined by the negative feedback circuit and is defined by the equation:
23
General Diagram Of An Active Filter
24
Damping Factor The damping factor affects the filter response by negative
feedback action. Any attempted increase or decrease in the output voltage is
offset by the opposing effect of the negative feedback to make the response curve flat in the passband.
By advanced mathematics, which we will not cover, values for the damping factor have been derived for various orders of filters to achieve the maximally flat response of the Butterworth characteristic.
25
The Value Of The Damping Factor The value of the damping factor depends on the order
(number of poles) of the filter. The more poles a filter has, the faster its roll-off rate. To achieve a second-order Butterworth response, for
example, the damping factor must be 1.414. To implement this damping factor, the feedback resistor
ratio must be
26
Non-inverting Gain The non-inverting voltage gain is: For second-order Butterworth response: DF = 1.414

1 2 2 2 1.414 0.586R R DF

1 22DF R R
2If 10 kR
1 20.586R R
1 5.86kR
27
Critical Frequency and Roll-Off Rate The critical frequency is determined by the values of the
resistors and capacitors.
28
The Number Of Poles The number of poles determines the roll-otf rate of filter. A Butterworth response produces -20 dB/decade/pole. A first-order (one-pole) roll-off -20 dB/decade; A second-order (two-pole) roll-off -40 dB/decade; A third-order (three-pole) roll-off -60 dB/decade; Generally, to obtain a filter with three poles or more, one-
pole or two-pole filters are cascaded.
29
Cascaded Filters The number of filter poles can be increased by cascading.
A third-order filter will cascade second-order and a first-order filter.
A fourth-order filter cascades two second-order filters.
30
Design Parameter Table For Butterworth Filters
31
Active Low-pass Filters Filters that use op-amps as the active element provide
several advantages. The op-amp provides gain, with high input impedance and
the low output impedance. Active filters are also easy to adjust over a wide frequency
range without altering the desired response.
32
Type Of Active Low-pass Filters Analyze active low-pass filters. A single-pole filter and determine its gain and critical
frequency. Identify a two-pole Sallen-Key filter and determine its gain
and critical frequency. Cascading low-pass filters for higher roll-off rate.
33
A Single-Pole Filter A single-pole low-pass with roll-off -20 dB/decade. The critical frequency The op-amp in this filter is connected as a noninverting
amplifier with the voltage gain
34
The Sallen-Key Low-Pass Filter The Sallen-Key is one of the most common configurations
for a second-order. There are two low-pass RC circuits that provide -40
dB/decade roll-off.
35
The Critical Frequency The critical frequency for the Sallen-Key filter is:
The component values can be made equal:
In this case, the expression for the critical frequency simplifies to
The R1 /R2 ratio must be 0.586 to produce DF of 1.414 required for a second-order Butterworth response.
and A B A BR R R C C C
36
Example: Determine the critical frequency of the Sallen-Key low-pass filter and set the value of R1 for an approximate Butterworth response. Sol:
37
Cascaded Low-Pass Filters A third-order low-pass response is done by cascading a two-
pole Sallen-Key and a single-pole filter.
38
Cascaded Low-Pass Filters A four-pole configuration obtained by cascading two
Sallen-Key (2-pole) low-pass filters.
39
Example: For the four-pole filter determine the capacitance values for a critical frequency of 2680 Hz. If all the resistors in the RC low-pass circuits are 1.8 k. Also select values for the feedback resistors to get a Butterworth response.
40
Homework: Find capacitance values for fc = 1 kHz,all the filter resistors are 680. Also specify the values for the feedback resistors to produce a Butterworth response.
41
Active High-pass Filters In high-pass filters, the roles of the capacitor and resistor
are reversed in the RCcircuits. The basic parameters are the same as for low-pass filters. A single-pole high-pass filter. A two-pole Sallen-Key high-pass filter. Cascading high-pass filters for higher roll-off rate.
42
A Single-Pole High-pass Filter Notice that the input circuit is a single high-pass RC circuit. The negative feedback circuit is the same as low-pass filters.
43
The Sallen-Key High-Pass Filter The components RA, CA, RB, and CB form the two-pole
frequency-selective circuit. Notice that the positions of the resistors and capacitors are
opposite to those in the low-pass configuration.
44
Example: Implement an equal-value second-order Butterworth response with a critical frequency of 10 kHz.
45
Cascading High-Pass Filters First and second-order high-pass filters can be cascaded to
provide three or more poles. A six-pole high-pass filter consisting of three Sallen-Key
two-pole stages, a roll-off of -120 dB/decade
46
Active Band-pass Filters A band-pass response can be thought of as the overlapping
of a low-frequency response curve and a high-frequency response curve.
47
Cascaded Low-Pass and High-Pass Filters One way to implement a band-pass filter is a cascaded
arrangement of a high-pass filter and a low-pass filter.
48
Cascaded Low-Pass and High-Pass Filters The critical frequency of each filter is chosen so that the
response curves overlap. The critical frequency of the high-pass filter must be lower
than that of the low-pass stage. This filter is limited to wide band-width applications.
49
The Critical Frequency The lower frequency “fcl” of the passband is the critical
frequency of the high-pass filter. The upper frequenc”fc2” is the critical frequency of the
low-pass filter.
50
Multiple-Feedback Band-Pass Filter The two feedback paths are through R2 and C1. R1 and C1 provide the low-pass response. R2 and C 2 provide the high-pass response. The maximum gain A0 at f0. Q values less than 10.
51
The Center Frequency An expression for the center frequency :
Making C1 = C 2 = C yields
52
Design Equations A capacitor is chosen and three resistor values are
calculated to achieve the desired values for f0, BW, and A0. From Q = f0 × BW: The resistor values can be found using
the following formulas(stated without derivation):
53
Limitation On The Gain Develop a gain expression by solving for Q in R1 and R 2
formulas as follows:
54
Example: Determine the center frequency, maximum gain, and bandwidth for the Multiple-Feedback Band-Pass Filter
55
State-Variable Filter The state-variable or universal active filter consists of a
summing amplifier and two op-amp integrators. Op-amp integrators act as single-pole low-pass filters that
are combined in a cascaded arrangement to form a second-order filter.
Although used primarily as a band-pass (BP) filter, the state-variable configuration also provides low-pass (LP) and high-pass (HP) outputs.
56
State-Variable Filter The center frequency is set by the RC circuits in integrators. For band-pass filter, the critical frequencies of both
integrators are equal to the center frequency of passband.
57
Basic Operation of State-Variable Filter At input frequencies below fc, the input signal passes
through the summing amplifier and integrators. The signal is fed back 180out of phase. Thus, the feedback
signal and input signal cancel for all frequencies below approximately fc.
As the low-pass response of the integrators rolls off, the feedback signal diminishes, thus allowing the input to pass through to the band-pass output.
58
Basic Operation of State-Variable Filter Above fc, the low-pass response disappears, thus preventing
the input signal from passing through the integrators. As a result, the band-pass output
peaks sharply at fc as indicated.
The Q is set by resistors R5 and R6
59
Example: Determine the center frequency, Q, and BW for the band-pass output of the state-variable filter
60
Active Band-stop Filters Band-stop filters reject a specified band of frequencies. Band-stop filters are sometimes referred to as notch filters.
Multiple-Feedback Band-Stop Filter The configuration is similar to
the band-pass except that R3 has been moved and R4 has been added.
61
State-Variable Band-Stop Filter Summing the low-pass and the high-pass responses of the
state-variable filter with a summing amplifier creates a band-stop filter.
62
Example: Verify that the band-stop filter has a center frequency of 60 Hz, and optimize the filter for a Q of 10.

applications Fundamentally important circuits are covered in Electronic I

3
Op-amp Advanced Applications A general-purpose op-amp, such as the 741, is a versatile
and widely used device. However, there are some specialized IC amplifiers
available that have certain features or characteristics oriented to specially advanced applications.
These devices are actually derived from the basic op-amp. These special circuits include the amplifier that is used in
high-noise environments, high-voltage and medical applications.
4
Op-amp Advanced Applications The special-purpose Op-amp applications:
Schmitt trigger comparatorA-to-D and D-to-A converter Operational transconductance amplifier (OTA)
5
Comparators A comparator is an op-amp circuit that compares two input
voltages and produces an output in either of two states indicating greater than or less than relationship of inputs.
In this application, the op-amp is used in the open-loop configuration.
The op-amp as a zero-level detector. 6
Nonzero-Level Detection The zero-level detector can be modified to detect positive
and negative voltages by connecting a fixed reference voltage source to the inverting ( - ) input.
7
Nonzero-Level Detection As long as Vin is less than VREF, the output remains at the
maximum negative level. When the input voltage
exceeds the reference voltage, the output goes to its maximum positive voltage.
8
Effects of Input Noise on Comparator Operation In practical, noise (unwanted voltage fluctuations) appears
on the input line, superimposed on the input voltage.
Noise will affect output voltage if a low-frequency sinusoidal voltage with high frequency superimposed noise is applied to the input of a zero-level detector
9
Effects of Input Noise on Comparator Operation When the sine wave approaches 0, the fluctuations due to
noise cause the input to vary above and below 0 several times, thus producing an erratic output voltage.
10
Reducing Noise Effects with Hysteresis This unstable condition occurs when the input voltage
hovers around the reference voltage, and any small noise fluctuations cause the comparator to switch first one way and then the other.
An erratic output voltage occurs because the comparator switches from negative output to positive output at the same input voltage level that switch in the opposite direction.
11
Reducing Noise Effects with Hysteresis “Hysteresis” means that there is a higher reference level
when the input voltage goes from a lower to higher value than when it goes from a higher to a lower value.
A good example of hysteresis is a common house-hold thermostat that turns the air-conditioner on at one temperature and off at another.
The two reference levels are referred to as the upper trigger point (UTP) and the lower trigger point (LTP).
12
Upper Trigger Point (UTP) and Lower Trigger Point (LTP)
UTP and LTP these two-level hysteresis is established with a positive feedback arrangement.
Notice that the noninverting (+) input is connected to a resistive voltage divider such that a portion of the output voltage is fed back to the input.
The input signal is applied to the inverting ( - ) input.
13
Comparator With Positive Feedbackfor Hysteresis Assume that the output is at positive maximum + VOUT(max). The voltage fed back to noninverting input is VUTP :
14
Comparator With Positive Feedbackfor Hysteresis When Vin exceeds VUTP, the output voltage drops to its
negative maximum, -VOUT(max). Now the voltage fed back to the noninverting input is V LTP
15
Comparator With Positive Feedbackfor Hysteresis The input voltage must now fall below VLTP, before the
device will switch from the maximum negative voltage back to the maximum positive voltage.
This means that a small amount of noise voltage has no effect on the output.
16
Schmitt trigger A comparator with hysteresis is sometimes known as a
Schmitt trigger. The amount of hysteresis is defined by the difference of the
two trigger levels.
17
Comparator Applications Over-Temperature Sensing Circuit, an op-amp comparator
used in a precision over-temperature sensing circuit to determine when the temperature reaches a critical value.
18
Over-Temperature Sensing Circuit A thermistor (R1) is a temperature-sensing resistor with a
negative temperature coefficient (its resistance decreases as temperature increases).
The potentiometer (R2 ) is set at a value equal to the resistance of the thermistor at the critical temperature.
At normal temperatures (below critical), R1 is greater than R2, thus creating an unbalanced condition that drives the op-amp to its low saturated output level and keeps transistor Q1 off.
19
Over-Temperature Sensing Circuit As the temperature increases, the resistance of the
thermistor decreases. When the temperature reaches the critical value, Rl
becomes equal to R2 and the bridge becomes balanced (since R3 = R4 ).
At this point the op-amp switches to its high saturated output level, turning Q1 on. This energizes the relay, which can be used to activate an alarm or initiate an appropriate response to the over-temperature condition.
20
Analog-to-Digital (A/D) Conversion A/D Conversion is a interfacing process used when an
analog system must provide inputs to digital system. The simultaneous, or flash, method of A/D conversion uses
parallel comparators to compare the linear input signal with reference voltages developed by a voltage divider.
When the input voltage exceeds the reference voltage for any given comparator, a high level voltage is produced on that comparator's output.
21
Flash A/D Converter ADC that produces
three-digit binary numbers represent the values of the analog input voltage.
2n - 1 comparators required for conversion to an n-digit binary.
22
Flash A/D Converter The large number of comparators is the drawbacks of the
simultaneous ADC. Its chief advantage is that it provides a fast conversion time. The reference voltage for each comparator is set by the resistive
voltage-divider circuit and VREF. The output of each comparator is connected to an input of the
priority encoder. The priority encoder produces a binary number on its output
representing the highest value input.
23
Example: Determine the binary number sequence of the three-digit Flash ADC for the input signal shown in the Figure and the sampling pulses shown.
24
25
Digital-to-analog Converter (DAC) D/A conversion is a process for converting digital signals to
analog (linear) signals. An example is a voice signal that is digitized for storage,
processing or transmission and must be changed back into the original audio signal in order to drive a speaker.
One method of D/ A conversion uses a scaling adder with input resistor values that represent the binary weights of the digital input code.
26
Scaling adder for four-digit digital-to-analog converter (DAC)
27
Example: Deternine the output voltage of the DAC for the sequence of four-digit binary codes represented by waveforms. A high level is binary l, and low level is binary 0. The least significant binary digit is D0.
28
Solution First, determine the current for each of the weighted inputs. Since the inverting input of the op-amp is at 0 V (virtual
ground), and a binary 1 corresponds to a high level ( + 5 V). The Current through any of the input resistors equals 5 V
divided by the resistance value.
29
The voltage across Rf equals the output voltage, which is negative with respect to virtual ground.
30
31
R/2R ladder D/A conversion The R/2R ladder is more commonly used D/A conversion. It has the disadvantage over the binary-weighted-input DAC
because it requires only two resistor values.

40
R/2R ladder D/A conversion Each successively lower-weighted input produces an output
voltage that ishalved. So that the output voltage is proportional to the binary
weight of the input bits.
41
Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTA) Conventional op-amps are voltage amplifiers in which the
output voltage equals the gain times the input voltage. The operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) is
primarily a voltage-to-current amplifier in which the output current equals the gain times the input voltage.
42
Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTA) The double circle symbol at the output represents an output
current source that is dependent on a bias current. Like the conventional op-amp, OTA has two differential
input terminals, a high input impedance, and a high CMRR. Unlike the conventional op-amp, the OTA has a bias-
current input terminal, a high output impedance and no fIxed open-loop voltage gain.
43
The Transconductance is the Gain of an OTA The transconductance is the ratio of the output current to the
input voltage. For an OTA, the ratio of output current to input voltage is
the gain of OTA called transconductance : In an OTA, the transconductance is dependent on a constant
(K) times the bias current (IBIAS) : The output current is function of input voltage and the bias
current :44
The Transconductance is a Function of Bias Current The transconductance and the bias current characteristic
graph illustrates that the transconductance increases linearly with the bias current.
The constant K, is the slope of the line.
K is approximately 16 μS/μA.
45
Basic OTA Circuits OTA used as an inverting amplifier with fixed voltage gain. The voltage gain is set by transconductance and load
resistance. Dividing both sides by Vin:
Since Vo/Vin is voltage gain and Iout/Vin = gm
46
OTA Inverting Amplifier With Variable-voltage Gain The transconductance “gm” determined by the bias current,
which is set by DC supply voltages and bias resistor RBIAS. The most useful features of an OTA is the voltage gain can
be controlled by the amount of bias current. By using a variahle resistor in series with RBIAS can produce
a change in IBIAS, which changes the transconductance. The voltage gain can also be controlled with separated
variable supply voltage causes a change in the bias current.
47
OTA Inverting Amplifier With Variable-voltage Gain
48
A Specific OTA: LM13700 LM 13700 is a dual-device package containing two OTAs. K is approximately 16 μS/μA. The bias current is determined by the formula:
The 1.4 V is the internal base-emitter junction and a diode juncton
49
The Input and Output Resistances Not only transconductance of OTA vary with bias current. Both the input and output resistances decrease as the bias
current increases.
50
Example: OTA is connected as an inverting fixed-gain amplifier, determine the approximate voltage gain.
If dc supply voltages is ±12 V, find voltage gain value ?
51
OTA Applications: Amplitude Modulator OTA amplitude modulator : the voltage gain is varied by
applying a modulation voltage to the bias input.
A constant-amplitude input signal is applied, the amplitude of the output signal will vary according to the modulation voltage on the bias input.
52
OTA Applications: Amplitude Modulator The gain is dependent on bias current, and bias current is
related to the modulation voltage by the relationship:
This modulating action is for a higher-frequency sinusoidal input voltage and a lower-frequency sinusoidal modulating voltage or some other signal such as triangle/square waves.
53
Example: The input to the OTA amplitude modulator is a 50 mV peak-to-peak, 1 MHz sine wave. Determine the output signal, given the modulation voltage shown is applied to the bias input.
54
The maximum voltage gain is when IBIAS, and gm is maximum. This happen at maximum peak of VMOD
K is approximately 16 μS/μA
55
The minimum bias current is
