Πώς μπορεί να αμυνθεί κανείς στον καταιγισμό από εικόνες που συνιστά την καθημερινή μας ζωή To 1985 στα μέσα της δεκαετίας που αποθέωσε την εικόνα και την κατανάλωση ο Michel Tournier έδωσε μια πειστική απάντηση σε αυτό το ερώτημα με το μυθιστόρημα Η χρυσή σταγόνα Ο ήρωάς του ένας νεαρός βοσκός ονόματι Ίντρις ταξιδεύει στο Παρίσι από τη βορειοδυτική Σαχάρα προκειμένου να βρει το κλεμμένο πορτρέτο του μια φωτογραφία που του τράβηξε σε ανύποπτο χρόνο μια γαλλίδα τουρίστρια Ο εκπατρισμένος Ίντρις πρέπει πάση θυσία να εντοπίσει αυτή τη γυναίκα για να πάρει πίσω ένα κομμάτι του εαυτού του που laquoέφυγεraquo μαζί με τη φωτογραφία Οι προσπάθειές του ωστόσο αποδεικνύονται άκαρπες το Παρίσι είναι ένας τόπος γεμάτος παγίδες και οφθαλμαπάτες που καιροφυλαχτούν σε κάθε του βήμα Εξουθενωμένος ο Ίντρις βρίσκει εντέλει καταφύγιο στον καλλιγράφο δάσκαλο Αμπντ Αλ Γάφαρι στο πλευρό του οποίου επανακτά τον laquoαχώρητο χρόνο της παιδικής του ηλικίας μέσω της μελέτης της άσκησης και της ανιδιοτέλειαςraquo θα μάθει πώς laquoνα μακραίνει οριζοντίως ορισμένα γράμματαraquo αλλά και πώς laquoνα εισάγει στη γραμμή σιωπές ζώνες ηρεμίας και ανάπαυσης ανάλογες της ίδιας της ερήμουraquomiddot θα μάθει επίσης laquoπερί του αλληλένδετου της αναπνοής και της γραφήςraquo πότε να κάνει στάσεις πώς laquoνα σταθμίζει τον χρόνοraquo1 Ο Τουρνιέ γράφει για ότι ο Ίντρις μαθαίνει

Η καλλιγραφία απεχθάνεται το κενό Η λευκότητα της σελίδας την προσελκύει όπως το χαμηλό βαρομετρικό προκαλεί τους ανέμους και ξεσηκώνει τη θύελλα Μια θύελλα σημείων που έρχονται κατά νέφη να αποτεθούν επάνω στη σελίδα σαν πουλιά από μελάνι σε χιονισμένη επιφάνεια Τα μαύρα σημεία αραδιασμένα ανά πολεμικές ομάδες με ανασηκωμένα ράμφη με φουσκωμένες γούσες με λυγισμένα φτερά παρελαύνουν από γραμμή σε γραμμή κι ύστερα συνάζονται σε στεφάνες ρόδακες χορούς σύμφωνα με μια σοφή συμμετρία

Η σμίλη του γλύπτη ελευθερώνει το νεαρό κορίτσι τον αθλητή ή το άλογο από τον όγκο του μαρμάρου Ομοίως τα σημεία είναι όλα τους δέσμια του μελανιού και του μελανοδοχείου Το καλέμι τα ελευθερώνει και τα εξαπολύει πάνω στη σελίδα Η καλλιγραφία είναι απελευθέρωση2

Παρότι έχουν παρέλθει τριάντα χρόνια από την κυκλοφορία της Χρυσής σταγόνας οι παρατηρήσεις του Tournier παραμένουν ακόμη εύστοχες Φαίνεται πως ο χρόνος αδυνατεί νrsquo αγγίξει σκέψεις που περιγράφουν το βαθύτερο νόημα

μιας καλλιτεχνικής πρακτικής μιας πρακτικής που σίγουρα δεν αφορά όσους απλά ζωγραφίζουν και σχεδιάζουν με αφαιρετικό τρόπο αλλά εκείνους τους λίγους που έχουν τη διάθεση την αντοχή και την ικανότητα να ακολουθήσουν μελέτες προχωρημένου επιπέδου

Η Ελένη Ζούνη ανήκει σε αυτή την ξεχωριστή και ολιγάριθμη ομάδα καλλιτεχνών Ως αποτέλεσμα μιας ευαίσθητης και στοχαστικής διαδικασίας με έντονο τελετουργικό χαρακτήρα τα έργα της αποκαλύπτουν την απελευθερωτική δύναμη των σημείων και των γραμμών αμφισβητώντας παράλληλα την κυριαρχική παρουσία ομοιωμάτων και εικόνων Όπως ο ήρωας του Tournier έτσι και η Ζούνη αναζητά εναγωνίως ένα αντίδοτο που θα της δώσει τη δυνατότητα να αντισταθεί laquoστη δουλεία που επιβάλλει η εικόνα και στην απίστευτη εξουσία τηςraquo Και το αντίδοτο αυτό έχει όνομα είναι laquoτο αφηρημένο σημείο που απελευθερώνει αναζωογονείraquo3

Η νέα της δουλειά της Ζούνη που έρχεται μετά την έκθεση Γραμματομορφές στο Επιγραφικό Μουσείο το 2013 φανερώνει το συνεχιζόμενο ενδιαφέρον της καλλιτέχνιδας για την οπτικότητα της γραφής και τη μορφολογία στη φύση Μεταξύ των θεματικών και λειτουργιών που εξετάζει στη ζωγραφική και στα σχέδιά της είναι οι μορφοποιήσεις που παράγει το χέρι μέσα από αυτοματικές και επαναληπτικές κινήσειςmiddot η σημασία του ρυθμού και της επιβράδυνσης κατά τη σχεδιαστική διαδικασίαmiddot η σοφή συμμετρία της σύνθεσης αλλά και η δυναμική συμμετρία που συναντάμε στη μορφολογία φυτών κρυστάλλων πετρωμάτων οργανισμών και κυττάρων4

Τα αφαιρετικά έργα της Ζούνη είτε είναι ζωγραφική σε ξύλο είτε μελάνια σε διαφάνειες και χαρτί θυμίζουν τα σχήματα που δημιουργούνται βάσει ενός σύνθετου και ισορροπημένου συστήματος όπου ο έλεγχος είναι εξίσου σημαντικός με το τυχαίο Στις διαφάνειές της τα σχήματα αυτά δημιουργούνται και μέσω λέξεων έχουμε δηλαδή να κάνουμε με συνθέσεις στις οποίες παρατηρούνται συνηχήσεις αλλά και laquoπαρηχήσειςraquo όπως στα σχήματα λόγου Σε μια παρήχηση του ρ για παράδειγμα επαναλαμβάνεται σε διαδοχικές λέξεις ο ίδιος φθόγγος Ομοίως σε μια διαφάνεια της Ζούνη ζωγραφισμένη με μπλε μελάνι συναντάμε μια σειρά λέξεων που αρχίζουν από ρ laquoρόδαraquo laquoραντεβούraquo laquoρυθμόςraquo

Ως γνωστόν τα σχήματα λόγου είναι laquoεκφραστικοί τρόποι που αποκλίνουν από τους συμβατικούς κανόνες της χρήσης του λόγου Πρόκειται για συγκεκριμένες εκφραστικές επιλογές που εξυπηρετούν νοηματικές ή αισθητικές επιδιώξεις και σχετίζονται με α) τη γραμματική συμφωνία των λέξεων β) τη θέση των λέξεων στην πρόταση γ) τη σημασία των λέξεων δ) την πληρότητα του λόγουraquo5 Στα έργα της Ζούνη ο λόγος κατέχει μια ιδιαίτερη θέση και προσδιορίζει άμεσα την εικόνα που παράγεται Τα σχέδιά της τα οποία τιτλοφορεί Σημειώσεις (Markings) προκύπτουν άλλωστε μέσα από μια διαδικασία που παραπέμπει στη γραφή Εδώ η σκέψη της καλλιτέχνιδας καταγράφεται σαν λόγος Τα σχήματα που καταλαμβάνουν τις σελίδες του μπλοκ σημειώσεων το οποίο η καλλιτέχνης διατηρεί και ανατρέχει ανά διαστήματα για να σχεδιάσει συγκροτούν ένα είδος κειμένου Κάθε ένα από αυτά τα σχέδια-κείμενα αποτελείται συνήθως από γραμμές δίνες σπείρες ή συναστρίες με τις δικές του απαραίτητες πυκνώσεις και αραιώσεις και σε έναν συνδυασμό χρωμάτων που περιλαμβάνει κυρίως το μπλε το κόκκινο και το μαύρο

Τα σχήματα λόγου στο έργο της Ζούνη μάς επαναφέρουν έτσι στη λειτουργία και στη σημασία της καλλιγραφίας όπως αυτή αποτυπώνεται στη Χρυσή σταγόνα Μέσα από τον Θρύλο της ξανθιάς βασίλισσας που αφηγείται ο δάσκαλος Αμπντ Αλ Γάφαρι στους μαθητές του ο Τουρνιέ διευκρινίζει πώς ακριβώς εννοεί την εικόνα σαν ένα συνονθύλευμα σημείων Η γοητεία της όπως λέει laquoείναι ακαταμάχητη μόνο στα μάτια

των αναλφάβητωνraquo Αντιθέτως laquoγια τον εγγράμματο η εικόνα δεν είναι άλαλη Το ούρλιασμά της ndashίδιο με εκείνο του αγριμιούndash αναλύεται σε εύλαλο λόγο Αρκεί μονάχα να ξέρει κανείς να τον διαβάζειhellipraquo Και συνεχίζει εξηγώντας ότι laquofigure δεν σημαίνει μόνο μορφή ανθρώπινο πρόσωπο αλλά και σχήμα λόγου και ότι υπάρχουν σχήματα ευφωνίας που ονομάζονται πρόθεση επένθεση παράγωγο αφαίρεση συγκοπή αποκοπή μετάθεση διαίρεση συναίρεση και κράσηmiddot σχήματα συντάξεως που ονομάζονται έλλειψη ζεύγμα κατά το νοούμενον υπερβατόν και πλεονασμόςmiddot σχήματα λέξεως ή τρόποι που ονομάζονται μεταφορά ειρωνεία αλληγορία υπαινιγμός κατάχρηση υπαλλαγή συνεκδοχή μετωνυμία ευφημισμός αντονομασία μετάληψη και αντίφρασηmiddot σχήματα διανοίας τέλος που ονομάζονται αντίθεση αποστροφή επιφώνηση ανθυποφορά επίκληση υπερβολή λιτότης προσωποποίηση και υποτύπωσηraquo6

Τα figures της Ελένης Ζούνη ndashκαι εδώ με τον όρο figure εννοούμε όλα τα έργα της ακόμα και τις μικρές γλυπτικές φιγούρες από πηλόndash βασίζονται εντέλει σε μια σχεδιαστική διαδικασία που χαρακτηρίζεται από ρευστότητα και αναφέρεται στον τρόπο του υπάρχειν Σε μια συζήτηση για το σχέδιο ανάμεσα στον John Berger και στον γιό του Yves ο πρώτος ρωτάει τον δεύτερο laquoΠού είμαστε ndashπνευματικάndash όταν σχεδιάζουμε Μπορούμε να δώσουμε μια απάντηση σε αυτό το ερώτημα η οποία να λαμβάνει υπόψη της όχι τον χώρο αλλά τον χρόνο Μπορούμε να σκεφτούμε τα σχέδια σαν δίνες στην επιφάνεια της ροής του χρόνουraquo7 Όπως εύστοχα παρατηρεί ο Berger από τη στιγμή που το σχέδιο μοιάζει με ρεύμα (flowing) το να πηγαίνεις μαζί του συνεπάγεται να αφήνεις τον εαυτό σου να παρασύρεται και να χάνεται Αλλά την ίδια στιγμή και εδώ είναι το οξύμωρο και ενδιαφέρον το σχέδιο είναι laquoμια διαδικασία συνεχούς διόρθωσης ndashκαι για να διορθώσεις κάτι θα πρέπει να σταθείς σε μια απόσταση και να μην παρασυρθείςraquo8 Όλα δείχνουν πως η Ελένη Ζούνη εφαρμόζει κατά γράμμα αυτή τη διαδικασία όταν δημιουργεί εφοδιασμένη με τα κατάλληλα εργαλεία (σύμβολα αναγνώσεις κειμένων όπως το Για την φύση των πραγμάτων του Λουκρήτιου αλλά και ψυχικά αποθέματα) καταφέρνει να πάρει τις αποστάσεις της να παρασυρθεί από τις ροές του σχεδίου της αναζητώντας το νόημα μέσα στον τρομερό κόσμο των εικόνων ndashείναι κι αυτή laquoσαν τον νεαρό κυνηγό που χώνεται μέσα σε σκοτεινό δάσος με το τόξο και τις σαΐτες τουraquo9

How can one defend oneself against the deluge of images that is our daily life In 1985 half way through the decade that deified images and consumerism Michel Tournier provided a convincing answer in his novel La Goutte drsquoor His hero a young shepherd named Idris travels from north-western Sahara to Paris in search of his stolen portrait a photo of himself taken at some point by a French tourist Idris must find this woman at all costs and reclaim the part of himself that lsquoleftrsquo together with that photograph Yet his efforts prove fruitless Paris is a place full of traps and illusions that lie in wait for him at every step The exhausted Idris finally seeks refuge with master calligrapher Abd Al Ghafari next to whom he regains ldquothe vast stretches of his childhood [] through study practice and disinterestednessrdquo he learns how ldquoto lengthen certain letters horizontallyrdquo but also how to introduce ldquosilences into the line zones of calm and repose which are the desert itselfrdquo he learns also about ldquothe solidarity of breathing and writingrdquo how to pause how to feel ldquothe weight of timerdquo 1 Tournier writes of what Idris learns

Calligraphy abhors the void The whiteness of the page attracts it as an atmospheric depression attracts the winds and raises a storm A storm of signs that come and alight on the page in clouds like birds of ink on a field of snow The black signs lined up in bellicose cohorts their beaks raised their crops swollen their wings folded march from line to line and then reassemble in corollas in rosettes in choirs in skilful symmetry

The sculptorrsquos chisel liberates the young girl the athlete or the horse from the block of marble Similarly the signs are all prisoners of ink and the inkstand The pen liberates and unleashes them onto the page Calligraphy is liberation2

Although it is now thirty years since the publication of The Golden Droplet Tournierrsquos observations remain pertinent It seems that time cannot touch onersquos reflections upon the deeper meaning of artistic practice a practice which certainly does not concern those who simply produce abstract paintings and drawings but those few with the will the stamina and the skill to go into a more advanced study

Eleni Zouni is one of that select group of artists Derived from a sensitive reflective and highly ritualistic process her works demonstrate the liberating poser of signs and lines while at the same time disputing the dominant presence

of simulacra and images Like Tournierrsquos hero Zouni anxiously seeks an antidote to enable her to resist ldquothe slavery imposed by the image and its incredible powerrdquo And this antidote has a name it is ldquothe abstract sign that liberates rejuvenatesrdquo3

The latest work of Zouni coming after the exhibition Letterfroms she presented at the Epigraphical Museum in 2013 reflects her continuing interest in the visual aspect of writing and morphology in nature The subject areas and functions that Zouni examines in her painting include the forms generated by the hand through automatic and repetitive motions the importance of rhythm and slowing down during the drawing process the wise symmetry of the composition but also the dynamic symmetry we find in the morphology of plants crystals minerals organisms and cells4

The abstract works of Zouni be they paintings on wood or ink on paper and transparencies bring to mind the shapes formed on the basis of a complex and balanced system in which control is as important as the random element In her transparencies these patterns are also created through words that is we have to do with compositions that feature alliterations or assonances as in figures of speech In an alliteration of lsquorrsquo for example the same consonant is repeated in a sequence of words similarly in one of Zounirsquos transparencies we find a series of words starting with an lsquorrsquo painted in blue ink ldquorodardquo ldquorendezvousrdquo ldquorhythmrdquo

As we know figures of speech are ways of expression that deviate from the conventions of the use of language They are deliberate choices of expression meant to serve specific aesthetic aims or meanings and have to do with (a) the grammatical harmony of the words (b) the sequence of words in a sentence (c) the meaning of words (d) the fullness of speech5 In the works of Zouni speech holds a special place and has a decisive effect on determining the resulting image Indeed the drawings that Zouni calls Markings emerge through a process akin to writing Here the artistrsquos thought is recorded as speech The shapes that fill the pages of the notebook the artist keeps and uses to draw in from time to time make up a kind of text Each of these drawings-texts usually comprises lines vortices spirals or constellations of various densities and a combination of colours which are predominantly blue red and black

Thus the figures of speech in the work of Zouni bring us back to the meaning and function of calligraphy as it appears in The Golden Droplet Through the Legend of the blonde queen that master Abd Al Ghafari tells his pupils Tournier explains exactly how he approaches the image as an accumulation of signs Its fascination he says ldquois only irresistible to the eyes of the illiteraterdquo On the contrary ldquofor the literate man the image is not mute Its wild-beast roar unravels into many mellifluous words It is only a question of being able to readhelliprdquo And he goes on to explain that ldquofigure does not refer only to the human face and form but there are also figures of rhetoric These include figures of diction [hellip] such as prothesis epenthesis paragoge aphaeresis syncope apocope metathesis diaeresis synthesis and crasis They are also figures of construction [hellip] such as ellipsis zeugma syllepsis hyperbaton and pleonasm And figures of speech or tropes such as metaphor irony allegory allusion catachresis hypallage synecdoche metonymy euphemism antonomasia metalepsis and antiphrasis And finally figures of thought such as antithesis apostrophe epiphenomenon subjection obsecration hyperbole litotes prosopopoeia and hypotyposisrdquo6

The figures of Eleni Zouni ndashand by figures we mean all her works even her small sculpted clay figuresndash are ultimately based on a drawing process characterised by fluidity and pertaining to the mode of existence In a conversation about drawing between John Berger and his son Yves the former asks the latter ldquoWhere are we -in spirit- when we draw The question seems to be expecting a spatial answer but mightnrsquot it be a temporal one Could we think of drawings as eddies on the surface of the streams of timerdquo7 As Berger aptly observes drawing is ldquoa flowing And going with it means losing ourselves being carried away At the same time drawing is nothing if not a process of continuous correcting - and to correct one has to stand back and not be carried awayrdquo8 Everything shows that Eleni Zouni follows this process to the letter when she creates equipped with the appropriate tools (symbols texts such as Lucretiusrsquo On the Nature of Things but also mental reserves) she manages to keep her distance get carried away by the flow of her drawing as she seeks for meaning within the terrible world of images ndashjust like the ldquoyoung hunter [who] plunges into a dark forest with his bow and arrowsrdquo9
