The English Language Institute (ELI) summer language
academy is a two-week immersive English program at
North Central College, a private university located in
Naperville, Illinois, just 45 kilometers from downtown
Chicago. Founded in 1861, North Central is a four-year
liberal arts university offering bachelor’s degrees in
more than 55 academic departments and five master’s
degrees.
North Central’s beautiful 68.5-acre campus is located in
a residential neighborhood just one block from downtown
Naperville, a safe and friendly city of more than 140,000.
The university is also within walking distance from the
commuter station where trains for Chicago leave and
arrive every hour. Students have free time to explore both
Chicago and its suburbs with the ELI staff and counselors.
Arrival InformationResident students should schedule airline reservations to arrive at Chicago O’Hare (ORD) airport on July 18, 2017, and depart Chicago O'Hare on August 1, 2017.
The ELI staff will provide transportation to and from the airport for students arriving and departing on the above dates. Institute participants must provide a detailed flight itinerary to Kate Pope at [email protected].
Visa InformationStudents will take English classes for three hours per day for a total of 15 hours per week. Students can participate in this program on a tourist visa (B-1 or B-2 visa). Holders of other visa statuses may be eligible to participate in the program. Please contact the English Language Institute for more details.

Program OverviewThis two-week English as a Second Language (ESL) program provideshigh school students (ages 13-17) with English language and cultural learning opportunities in and outside the classroom. The focus ofthe program is to provide interesting, personalized classes that help students develop fluency and learn about life in the United States. Cross-cultural exploration is a key part of this program. Students will:
• Visit Chicago
• Go on university tours and learn about higher education in the United States
• Volunteer at local organizations
• Listen to guest speakers and connect with American students
Daily Class Schedule Students will be assigned to classes, according to skill levels, with up to 10 students in each class. Final order of daily courses will be decided by faculty members after enrollment is finalized and student levels are taken into consideration.

Faculty and ELI Counselors Classes will be taught by experienced ESL professionals. They are assisted by trained counselors, giving ELI students the special opportunity to learn from university students about American popular culture, language and campus life. Students are under constant supervision and accompanied by in-house program counselors as their resident assistants, peer tutors and activity chaperones.
Housing and Meals Students will be housed on campus in one university residence hall. All meals will be provided to resident camp students. Residence halls include a bed, desk and wireless internet. Residence halls are only available within the program dates.
Cross-Cultural ActivitiesStudents will participate in cross-cultural activities most afternoons and evenings. Activities will include visiting Chicago and local historic sites, watching professional sports games, and participating in individual and team sports such as bowling and laser tag. Classroom topics are connected to cross-cultural activities so students maximize their learning experience. Staff members accompany students on all activities.
Program FeesResident student fee: $2,800Resident student fee includes tuition fee, books, room and meals for length of program, scheduled trips, and medical insurance. Excludes airfare.
Nonresident student fee: $1,500 Nonresident student fee includes tuition, books, lunch, medical insurance, and afternoon activities for length of program. Excludes airfare.
ScholarshipsStudents who demonstrate outstanding academic excellence and financial need may be eligible for partial scholarships. Please contact the program director for more information.
