• Fortified Wine: es el vino no espumante que ha sido enriquecido con alcohol

• Sparkling Wine: es el vino espumante carbonatado (por fermentación o por

la impregnación de carbon dioxide). Incluye cualquier jugo de uva o mosto usado para endulzar este tipo de vino.

Rebate Wine: Es el vino especialmente preparado con doble destilación y madurado por un periodo de al menos 3 años, en toneles de roble con capacidad no mayor a 340 litros. Distelling Wine: es el vino especialmente preparado para destilación de los alcoholes que van a ser usados en brandy, otras bebidas alcoholicas o para propósitos industriales. Non-alcoholic: Se refiere a los jugos de uva concentrados, no fermentados ni diluidos destinados al uso de bebidas no alcoholicas como los jugos de frutas. Certificado de Origen:

La certificación de vino de origen (WO) se origina en el año 1973 y se modificó en el año 1993, autorizando el uso de etiquedado en su parte superior, que facilita su descorchado. La misma no certifica calidad, solo la autenticidad del contenido, no se acepta la utilización de azúcar (chaptalizacion) pero si el ajuste de acidez. El limite del contenido de determinadas sustancias, ej. sulfuro se aplica a todos los vinos certificados, a efectos de cumplimentar lo requerido por la Unión Europea y la “Food & Drug Administration” de Estados Unidos. Los vinos exportados a este ultimo mercado son acompañados por un certificado de contenido alcohólico (Surgeon General’s Statutory) El contenido alcohólico en vinos de exportación no puede superar un margen del 0,5 % (exigido por la Unión Europea), si bien el mismo se extiende al 1% para aquellos vinos destinados al consumo local.

Los vinos con certificado de origen son emitidos bajo estricto control, desde la cosecha de las uvas hasta la finalización del producto, para cumplimentar con los requisitos del esquema de “certificado de origen”. La botella sellada y etiquetada por la Junta de vinos y bebidas alcohólicas (Wine and Spirit Board), indica la bodega, tipo de varietal y año de cosecha, de acuerdo con la legislación (Liquor products act 1989)

La junta de vinos y bebidas alcohólicas efectúa inspecciones regulares a los

viñedos y bodegas y la certificación final, mediante análisis oficial, lo otorgan sus miembros constitutivos, designados por el Ministerio de Agricultura (4 representantes de las cooperativas agrícolas, 4 representantes del Instituto de vinos del Cabo, 2 Funcionarios del Ministerio de Agricultura, no mas de 2 representantes elegidos por sus investigaciones enológicas y un representante del Ministro). El área productora vitivinícola sudafricana se encuentra prácticamente confinada en la Región sud occidental del Cabo. Las bodegas certificadas (Estates)

La Cosecha de 1995 fue la primera en la cual se permitió a las bodegas certificadas adquirir uvas fuera de sus propiedades, hasta un máximo del 42 % del total de su producción. Los vinos así producidos debían estibarse separados y no podían ser comercializados en el nombre de la bodega.

Hasta hace 11 años atrás, solo se otorgaba Certificado de Origen a aquellos vinos que cumpliesen con 3 requisitos (varietal, cosecha y región productora). Debido a la necesidad de posicionarse en nuevos mercados y exigencias de los mismos, se acordó otorgar certificación de “Costal Región” para aquellos vinos clasificados como “Mixed Origin”. Certificación “Veritas”:

Las reglamentaciones actuales permiten utilizar el termino “Veritas” en aquellos vinos que hayan sido premiados con medalla de oro o doble medalla de oro en el concurso anual “SA National Show” (SANS). Esta certificación reemplaza la distinción anterior de “superior” y se ajusta mas a la calidad del vino, considerado por mas de 50 críticos y especialistas en la materia. Mezclas (Blends)

Actualmente se permite indicar el tipo de variedad intervinientes en la mezcla (blend) en orden porcentual decreciente. Si un varietal se encuentra en una proporción menor que e 20 %, deberá indicarse cual es el porcentaje.

Los vinos “varietales” se producen con un solo varietal, sin embargo, las reglamentaciones vigentes permiten hasta un contenido del 25 % con otro varietal o con distintos varietales, siendo etiquetado como varietal unico. Los vinos destinados a la exportación solo podrán contener hasta un 15 % de otros varietales.
