ABERGOWRIE HOUSE

Subsequent to the completion of Oliverʼs Cloister adjacent to the Sacred Heart Cathedral, our practice wascommissioned to design ʻAbergowrie Houseʼ for vacant land to the opposite lower city side of the Catherdral.

The principal intention included the provision of lettable office space and associated car parking. However through an understanding of site qualities, numerous strategies have been instigated and continued

from Oliverʼs Cloister to allow this development to achieve well beyond these basic provisions. These strategies generally result from adopting the consideration that the terrace should entirely sacred space.

They include:Restriction of car parking on the site so that it is removed from the terrace.

Placement of building mass so that views overlooking the apartments from the terrace are blocked and viewsover the city are retained.

Architectural orchestration through thresholds of the journey between the city below and the terrace

MATER CHAPELA component of an additional wave of renovation works to the original hospital included

the relocation of the existing entrance to the central location. This will enable the hospital entrance to be accessed directly from the parking facitilies and

address the rtecently introduced pedestrian and vehicluar entrance. This component is essential to the appropriate completion is essential to the appropriate

complettionof the new entrance sequence from the Bayswater Road frontage. Apart from reworks within the existing buildings for the new meeting rooms, offices and reception, the

new entrance incorporates the constuction of a Porte Cochere roof and a building extension to house the foyer entrance and chapel.

This extension utilises a two story volume to act as a marker and to provide interesting internal volume. The external walls continue the language of the introduced folded rendered

concrete masonary walls.

MATER TRAINING CENTREA federal government funding initiative enabled the development of a long desired training facility for the

Mater hospital at Pimlico. Principally to be utilised for the training of hospital staff, it is also intendedto encourage ongoing relationships with tertiary education establishments including JCU.

The training precinct incorporates the construction of a new building to the corner of Fulham Road and Diprose Street along with alteration and additions to the existing adjacent conference centre building.

The space between these two buildings has been crafted to provide a collective forecourt and entrancesto both of the buildlings. The upper level of the new training rooms and offices are linked through

transparent glass partitions.A future enclosure of the lower levels will enable the construction of a series of medical suites accessed

via a covered spine and connected to the adjacent medical centre building. The scheme thereby re-anchorstwo relatively disparate structures with new intensity.

COBURG EXTENSIONThis family home is located in the suburb of Coburg, in Melbourneʼs North. A typical

ʻCalifornian Bugalowʼ with timber weather board exterior and terracotta tiled roof, thehome is characteristic of is European-migrant influenced neighbourhood.

The clientʼs- a small professional family- wanted a large, open plan living room andkitchen space that would fully utilise the northern aspect of the block and open rear spaces

to create a more fluent transition into the large backyard and additonal deck space. The brief also called to separate private/ entertaining areas and the visitor is now drawn

through a long linear hallway to the rear space as it is woodedwith natural light through 3m ceilings throughout the day.
