Personal SkillsOriginally trained in fine art, I practised and exhibited
as an artist in the UK and Europe during the 1980s
and 90s. Exploring physical space in later pieces, my
work became increasingly architecturally focused. After
a five-year stint at Arts Council England, three as the
disability access officer for South East England, I made
a career change to architecture. For the past nine years I
have been employed in trainee positions in architectural
practices, where I have been able to combine my artistic,
writing and presentation skills. I completed the MA
course in Urban Design at Oxford Brookes University in
2012, passing the PG Dip stage with distinction in 2011.
I am currently studying one day a week for a BA Hons in
Architecture at London South Bank University and have
just completed the fourth year, gaining distinction in all
my modules.
I have an extensive background in report preparation
and in giving presentations at board level. I also have
significant experience in liaising with disabled people to
ensure they achieve equal access to public buildings.
In the 1990s I was the chair of Free for All, the disability
advisory committee for Sadler’s Wells, working with the
theatre, disabled people and architects to ensure that
Sadler’s Wells was truly accessible to all. I co-authored
Free for All – Access for Disabled People to Sadler’s
Wells Theatre, published by the London Borough Grants
Committee in 1997. Following this, in 1999-2005, I was
Chair of the Access Group at the South Bank Centre,
providing advice on disability access to the South Bank
Centre and the surrounding public realm to the client
and architect during the theatre rebuild. Between March
2005 and March 2008 I was a Director on the Board of
Sadler’s Wells Trust Ltd.
More recently, in my role as a Part I Assistant, I have
worked as a team member to produce accurate
information to deadlines, liaising with building control,
sub-contractors, consultants and suppliers in the
development of design and construction information.
