Was born on 17th of April IN1818 in Moscow

Died on 1st of March in 1881 in St. - Petersburg

Family

Alexander was born in Royal family of Emperor Nicolas I and his wife Alexandra Fedorovna (Sharlotte of Prussia). He had two sisters and four brothers.

EducationAlexander II spend his childhood In Winter Palace, his home. His father, Emperor Nicolas I, paid great attention to his son’s upbringing and education. Young heir studied such subjects as russian language, history, the Law Of God, military science, legislation, statistics, finances, arithmetics, international politics.

Background

• Poet Vasyliy Zhukovsky was the main mentor and friend of Alexander. Lessons of Zhukovsky sank deep into his soul.

• Alexander forever remember trip to Russia in 1837. He was accompanied by Zhukovsky. For the seven months they had visited 30 provinces. In Siberia they met with the Decembrists. On his return heir requested to alleviate the plight of the Decembrists.

Background

• Alexander had hobby. He was keen hunter, and, of course, could not pass by «The Notes of a hunter» written by Turgenev. Later, he said that this book convinced him of the necessity of abolition of serfdom.

• Alexander the second went down in history as the Tsar-liberator. During his rule, he realized how badly the country was needed reforms. And on February 9, 1861, Alexander II signed the manifest about abolition of the serfdom.

So, on March 5, 1861, the Manifesto was read in the churches after the mass. Alexander himself read his guard. So ended the era of serfdom.

Positive significance

Slavery was canceled. Many people get freedom.

The reform contributed to the development of capitalism

relations in Russia

Alexander’s death

Alexander II was killed by Ignatiy Grinevicky on 1st march 1881. The

Cathedral “Спас на крови” was built on the place of killing in Peterburg.
