T h u s the numb ei of the P ur n as is thirtysix.

T h e M ah P ur n as are classified main ly into three

acc ord preferential trea tment to Vi snu , B ra hm a and iva. T h eP ur n as glorify ing V is nu ar e styled as S t tv ik a, those glorifying

    Tmasa: B r a h m n d a , L iga , Brahmava i var ta , M r k a n d e y a ,

Br ah ma, A di t y a .It is remarkable to note that in the list of Tmasa Purnas

the G a r ud a Pur na mentions Adi tya P ur na instead of

T h e P ur na s ar e not una nim ous on this division. Fo r

    S ka nd a, P ad ma , V r h a and Agni from the R j as a list which

    S k a n d a and Agn i. T hu s we find that ther e is confusion in this

kind of classification which be co mes mor e co mpl ic at ed by the

statement of Skanda Purna 1 which assigns ten Purnas to iva,

four to Brahma, two each to Devi and Visnu.

Yet another kind of clas sification is recorded in the D evi

    b h g a v a t a 2 which na mes the ma h P ur n as by their initial

letters except the Garuda which it mentions by the full name.
