The Spanish Word War Excerpt from: How Ta Lola Came to Stay

Actually, Miguel and Juanita are not getting along any better in Spanish than in

English. They are fighting more now that they have two languages to do it in. The fights get

worse when they learn from their aunt that in Spanish, words have gender.

What does that mean? Juanita wants to know. Are some words pretty and

feminine and some- she looks over to her brother- ugly and mean?

Ta Lola tries to explain. In Spanish, words have to be masculine or feminine. She

doesnt know exactly why that is. The male words usually end in o, and the female words in

    a. Like the word for sky, cielo, is masculine, while the word for earth, tierra, is feminine.

We get the sky! We get the sky! Miguel cant help gloating at his sister. Its as if they

are playing Monopoly and he has just bought Boardwalk.

Well, we own the earth! It ends in a. La tierra! It is Juanitas turn to gloat. And

everything in the sky: la luna, la lluvia, las estrellas!

Ta Lola is shaking her head. Thats not the way it works. Boys dont own the sky. Girls

dont own the earth, the moon, the rain, and the stars. But neither Miguel nor Juanita is

    listening anymore.

Fill in the chart with the information it asks.

Fill in with the appropriate information.

    1. Spanish is a ___________________ language. Words are __________________ the way that they

are __________________. Most letters have only _______________ sound.

    2. The vowels in Spanish are ________, ________, ________, ________, and ________. They

have __________________ and it is always a(n) __________________ sound. As you say the

vowels in Spanish, your mouth will __________________. Vowels can have a(n)

    __________________.

    3. Although Spanish and English have the same base letters, there are many interesting

facts about the letters in Spanish. For example, the letter ________ is the only official

extra letter in the alphabet. The line above it is called a(n) ________. The sound/letter

________ can also be difficult for English speakers since we dont have it in our

language. The letters ________ and ________ are not common in the Spanish language

and you will only see them in ________ words. The letter ________ can have 3 different

pronunciations depending on the region. The letters ________ and ________ often have

the same pronunciation and name. In order to differentiate when spelling them, you

should say __________________ or __________________. The letters ________ and ________

can have two different pronunciations based on the vowel/letter that follows it. Dont

forget about the letter ________! It is (almost) always silent.

    4. Written accents are always placed above ________. They will indicate _______________

on a syllable. There are three different reasons that a word would have a written

accent. First, the Spanish language has very specific rules for pronunciation. If a word

__________________ the rules of pronunciation, there must be a written accent on the stressed

syllable. Second, an accent can differentiate two words that have the same

__________________ but different meanings. One example is __________________ and

__________________ . Lastly, all __________________ words will have an accent mark.

FORMALITY COMPROMISES YOU: Language nuance weighty in Europe In continental Europe, its all about you. Or rather, tu. Or vous. Or u or jij. Or ty or vy. Here, addressing a person in the singular or plural is more than just a question of grammar, its a social minefield. In France it can be a matter of state. A misused vous can make you seem cold and snobbish. But use tu to an elder or a boss and you risk being accused of acting overly familiar, even insolent. The rules are wavering a bit under the onslaught of the class-busting Internet, irreverent TV hosts, the influence of English and modernitys generally more relaxed ways. But from Paris to St. Petersburg, Bologna to Budapest and into the non-English-speaking New World beyond, using the wrong form of "you can cause great offense a sort of verbal poke in the eye. Simply put, European languages that break you down into several different forms do so depending on whom the speaker is addressing. It is what linguists call a T-V distinction, distinguishing formal and informal ways of saying you. In general, Europeans use the informal singular (tu in French and Italian, jij in Dutch, ty in Russian) when speaking to children, close family and friends, and a formal version (vous, u, vy) for everyone else, especially the elderly or people otherwise deserving of respect. Sounds simple? Well, yes and no. Exceptions to the rule are endless. The wife of French President Jacques Chirac, Bernadette, says she simply does not care for the informality of tu. So even after 50 years of marriage the couple still addresses each other with the formal vous. Conversely, tu can be used with great effect to be rude or menacing. In French, Robert de Niros You talkin to me? in the movie Taxi Driver only works with tu (Cest a moi que tu parles?). In fact, the informal you can also be so offensive that when the French police were battling rioters last autumn, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy tried to smooth feathers by ordering the cops to address individual protesters as vous. In Russia, some police and military officers like to assert their authority by deliberately using the informal ty when making arrests or pulling over motorists. Such verbal manhandling can draw a rebuke: Ne tyki Dont call my ty. In Paris, Australian Katia Grimmer-Laversanne likes to let new acquaintances take the lead. If they leap straight in with tu, then she knows that it is OK to be informal back. I prefer that they set the ground rules rather than me, because I have had so many embarrassing situations, says the 26-year-old graphic designer. In English, whether youre speaking to your best friend or the prime minister of Australia, it really doesnt matter how you say How are you? But living here, its a whole different ball game. So should the situation ever arise, be sure to as President Chirac Comment allez-vous? and never Tu va bien? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leicester, J.
