赤絵あるいは色絵。陶磁器の器肌に施された色彩顔料を高火度の炎により蒸着させ、赤色を主体としたさまざまな色彩画法で文様を描きやきものに絵画的装飾を施すことの総称。古来より幾世紀にもわたり人々は、やきものに様々な文様を加飾し、絵画的に飾ることを渇望した。日常生活をより豊かなものにするためさまざまな器を、より美しい器物へと昇華させ、やがてやきものをことのほか賞玩し、高く賞揚する習を楽しんできた。 近代の産声とともに、ユーラシア大陸を中心に欧米では、その作品の頂点とされる彩色された中国製磁器～彩色磁器を殊のほか高く称賛する歴史を持つ。十七世紀初頭になりようやく極東の島国、日本の「伊万里」に於いても磁器が誕生。ほぼ同時期に「赤絵」技法も開発され、またたく間にその百華狂瀾の如き「古伊萬里」と呼ばれる色絵磁器は中国製磁器とともに、世界市場を席巻することとなる。 しかし実は、赤、朱色を含んだ様々な陶磁器の彩色技法は既に遥かな昔、日本の縄文時代土器に見られるように、紀元前以前よりさまざまな原始的工芸品の諸相でも、すでにその揺籃期を迎えていたことも事実であり興味深い。 本展はこのような、古代から近代までのやきものと工芸作品に見る「色彩」に視点を集約し、やきものにおける色彩の美を集めて特集展示をいたします。 どうぞ、この機会にご高覧くださいませ。

Enamel or Polychrome is one of the most sophisticated production tech-niques among ceramic and porcelain arts by which kiln-site directors and potters apply the colored over-glazes to decorate the porcelain transparent surface in the high-temperature firing. Various patterns are designed and painted by different colors, mainly red color, providing the enamel with a highly pictorial decoration. Since ancient times, people have been craving to decorate various pat-terns on pottery, earthenware, ceramic, and porcelain pictorially. Various vessels used in daily life have been historically transformed into beautiful pieces by such human desires. Thus, over the centuries, people have prized that ceramic art to enrich their daily lives. With the arrival of the modern ages in the 17th century, people, particu-larly on the Eurasia Continents, they appreciated the colored porcelain as they found one of the most sophisticated methods in the decoration of the enamels. In the early 17th century, when the history of the world witnessed the peak of modernity, porcelain production was born and brought to Japan from the production technique of highly skilled experts in China and Korea. In this historical period, the technique of “red painting” was also developed in Japan. It took just a short period, almost a blink of an eye that the IMARI enam-eled ware porcelain products drew Europe’s attractions, and saw the boom of exotic production. On the other hand, it is essential to note that the techniques of decorating enamels with different colors already existed in the ancient peri-od, such as the Japanese JOMON period’s pottery. Our annual special exhibition series may feature a particular focus on the beauty of colored earthenware, pottery, ceramic, porcelain, and various ceramics and crafts. The visitors may enjoy the “red” and “colorfulness” in the exhibition. We hope that you will drop by and enjoy this unique & expertise exhibition.
