    Curriculum

    Scholastica has developed its

own curriculum; it aims to deliver a holistic education program combining the corecompetencies of the national and the British curricula. We are immensely proud of our

curriculum, which has been tailor-made to the specific requirements of the Bangladeshi

student, keeping in mind his or her heritage, culture and national identity. Scholasticascurriculum is a systematic, well thought-out and balanced document. It lays the

foundations of linguistics and literacy and includes guidelines on mathematical,

scientific, technological, aesthetic, creative, human and social, as well as moral and

cultural content at the appropriate stages of development of the individual. Ourcurriculum forms the basis on which long-term and mid-term lesson planning is

    conducted on an annual basis.

The comprehensive curriculum designed for the elementary, secondary and high school

classes ultimately leads to the University of Cambridge International ExaminationsOrdinary and Advanced Level General Certificate of Education exams, taught in Classes

IX through XII. These examinations are conducted under the auspices of the British

    Council, Dhaka.

The Scholastica curriculum lays the preparatory groundwork for the O Level and A

Level courses, encompassing the disciplines necessary for a well-rounded and balanced

education. Students are given opportunities to excel at all stages of their academic life,

regardless of their choice of career paths.

    CIE

CIE is part of the world-renowned University of Cambridge, and it is the worlds largest

provider of international qualifications for 14-19 year-olds attracting more than 610,000

entries from around the world each year. CIE offers a comprehensive syllabus, highquality textbooks, excellent systems for marking scripts, excellent teacher training

programs and relatively low examination fees.

    CDU

Scholasticas Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) is an independent department that

    oversees the academic program.

What do we do in the Curriculum Development Unit?

We spend a lot of time thinking about what to teach our students. We work hard to

upgrade what to teach, how to teach and when to teach. We want to ensure that a highstandard of education is delivered uniformly at all levels of the school. We are always

vigilant to tackle emerging problems and we come up with effective solutions and

    alternatives.

    A resourceful team of people

Did you know that our research and review work have played important roles in

producing what the students learn in the classroom? At Scholastica, considerable

planning goes into revising our curriculum and we do a lot of planning work over thecourse of the year. We also work to improve textbooks and the large range of education

aides and resources that make learning fun.

Did you know that teachers are also students?

Yes, teachers attend classes on how to teach well. The Curriculum Development Unit

works very closely to provide training, so our teachers are better equipped to teach yourchildren.

    School Year

The academic year begins in Julyand ends in June. The school year is divided into two terms that include four quarters.

The First Term begins in August after the hot and humid summer vacation and the

Second Term begins in January after the much-awaited winter vacation.

    Junior School

    Playgroup to Kindergarten

Our responsibility is to provide holistic education to our students. Each child is

considered to be a unique individual and we encourage students to develop entirely attheir own pace without imposing pressure or time constraints.

    Sharing helps to make friends

On their very first day at school, children tackle all the uncertainties and fears that come

from exposure to unfamiliar territory. The child gradually grows in confidence witheach new interaction with a peer. Tentative and nervous beginnings soon blossom into a

relationship of trust with the teacher.

Without realizing it, children begin to learn some of lifes simple but important lessons

those of sharing, borrowing and lending, taking turns, maintaining orderly queues,

putting things away in their proper place, and etiquette and manners. Our approach is toimpart basic social skills and to inculcate the spirit of give and take.

An environment to observe, listen and expressWe encourage children to observe their surroundings, think independently, ask

questions and freely express themselves without fear or inhibition, thereby honing their

observation, listening, verbal and comprehension skills. Visual learning is achieved via

flash cards, charts, books and other audio visual aides.

We create an environment that is conducive to oral participation and expression so that

each individual is able to interpret and respond to all forms of external stimuli.

Learning through playing, touching and feeling

We help children to become aware of their surroundings through investigation andexploration. They gradually develop a love of learning just by handling everyday

objects and utilizing their own five senses. Children are provided with paints and

brushes, blocks, beads, and sand, all of which allow them to develop their hand and eyecoordination, basic dexterity and cognitive skills. They then grow in confidence and are

eventually able to independently hold their pencils and develop their writing skills.

    Explore, experiment and build concepts

In every area of the learning environment, children are encouraged to develop theirbasic conceptual understanding of objects, sizes and shapes, nature, color, numbers,

    sounds, letters and more.

    Middle School

    Class I to II

    Ready for more challenges

Students who successfully complete the kindergarten levels are equipped for exposure toformal education. Our Middle School program exposes them to more subjects in a formalclassroom setting.

    An organized curriculum

The curriculum at this stage focuses on developing numeracy, literacy and an

understanding of the environment and our surroundings.

    Learning is fun!

All subjects are taught using interactive and activity-based methods. Asking questions is

encouraged and students are given assignments for project work, where they are given the

opportunity to display their personal views. These assignments not only promote learningand knowledge of concepts and fundamental principles, but imbibe the ethics of group

work and intra-team cooperation. Important verbal and presentation skills are also

    developed through such project work.

    Classes III IV

    Every child is an individual

Each child has his/her own identity and his/her own pace of learning. We are committed

to the realization of every students' potential through a holistic teaching program,

particularly at this crucial stage of their development.

Developing positive attitudes in the young learners

Students at this stage are developing both physically and mentally, hence learning in

these classes is designed and structured to develop positive attitudes. A sense of

confidence allows them to gain enough confidence to be able to work independently withminimum supervision.

    The little observers

Students learn not only from their texts but also from their surroundings. We encourage

the little observers to open their eyes, to look around and acquire knowledge from theirfriends, their teachers and elders, and their environment. This is the age where young

people start to be aware of their wider community, and we encourage them to explore it.

Building the future generation of Bangladeshis

English may be the primary medium of instruction, but we place equal emphasis onproficiency in Bangla, our mother tongue. Special Bangla classes are available to students

who need them, regardless of their nationality. Bangladesh Studies is also introduced as a

    subject at this level.

    Know the world around you

We introduce History and Geography as new subjects in Class III. At this stage of

development, children are curious about the world in which they live, its history and its

impact on the present. We develop this curiosity and interest in the world around them

    through these subjects.

    Learning from peers is fun

Activity classes are arranged so that students may absorb valuable lessons from their

peers and learn the significance of teamwork. They learn to share their views and ideas ina public setting, to care for their fellow team members, to overcome their fear of public

speaking and to lead successfully and confidently. These are essential skills for any

    Middle School student.

    Islamiat and Moral Science

A student not only needs intellectual expansion, he or she must acquire and practice

moral values and behavior in everyday life. We develop this moral sense in our youngstudents through Islamiat and Moral Science.

Strengthening each student's foundationThe academic program at this level is designed to strengthen a child's foundation, developed in the Middle School. These years help to enhance the students confidence

and prepare him or her to tackle the challenges of public examinations.

    Deepening knowledge and developing skills

The subjects offered to students of Classes V-VIII are Mathematics, English, Bangla,Bangladesh Studies, the Physical Sciences, the Social Sciences, Islamiat or Moral

Science, Art, Music, Drama, Sports, and Computer Studies. We also offer a host of extra-

curricular activities that build important skills such as teamwork, public speaking andleadership.

Students in Class VII start focusing on the physical sciences - Physics, Chemistry and

Biology, all taught as individual subjects. In Class VIII, they are also introduced to

Economics and Computer Studies, so that they are well-positioned to choose subjects forthe O Levels in either the sciences or humanities. At this critical stage of a students

career, the emphasis is on building strong foundations for more in-depth study in the

    High School.

Class IX and X - The O Level Program

Scholastica offers a course leading to the Cambridge International Examinations

Ordinary Level General Certificate of Education examinations.

In these courses, we push our students to broaden their horizons and test their limits, encouraging them to tap into skills and aptitudes they never knew they possessed. We

make them choose, engage, invent, manage and compete equipping them for eventual

    success in the public examinations.

Subjects OfferedThe compulsory subjects for all students are English, Bangla, Mathematics and

Bangladesh Studies or Additional Mathematics. Students can then choose to take subjects

within the Science Group or Humanities Group. Either stream allows students to take

subjects of their interest, with some flexibility to cross streams and broaden the scope oftheir learning.

The range of subjects offered at the O Level are not only commonly requested bystudents but are deemed to be requisite subjects for further study in any field. By

choosing either the Science or Humanities Group, students are able to build competencyin a range of subjects that will prepare them well for further study at University.

Assessment: We help students to set achievable, measurable targets

Assessment is conducted both through continuous assessment and term-wise

examinations. Thorough preparation for the O Level examinations is ensured via twoMock Exams which closely replicate the finals. Years of experience teaching the O

Levels has allowed us to understand the needs of the international examinations board

our mock results very closely mirror actual results received by our students!

    Developing life-long interests and passions

A students choices are paramount in determining the directions they wish to take.

Students are counseled to choose their subjects for the O Level very carefully, based on

their own interests and strengths. Class Teachers and Academic Supervisors are alwaysavailable to discuss subject choices with students to ensure they are making the right

    decisions for themselves.

Class XI and XII: The A Level Program

The A Level Course is a complete two-year course. The program provides a demanding, expansive educational experience to a select group of diverse, talented and intellectually

sophisticated students who are capable of challenging themselves, their peers and theirteachers in a setting that gives them confidence and builds their skills to thinkindependently. Through this program we aim to prepare our students for entry to the great

    universities of the world!

Bridging the gap between Secondary School and University

The A Level curriculum is not just an extension of the OLevel course; rather, it servesas a complete college preparatory program. Indeed, the course is advanced enough to be

able to offer credits towards a college or university degree. It is therefore no wonder that

our graduates are held in high esteem throughout the world.

The number and degree of difficulty of courses chosen each year are an importantmeasure of academic motivation and achievement. Therefore, students in Scholastica

have options to tailor their own academic program by selecting the subjects that will suit

their intellectual pursuits. We are also regularly revising the subject choices to ensure thatwe meet the demands of students and institutions of higher studies.
