Documentation for the hen version exists in both the old andnew versions of dftf .
The new version of DFTP is distinguished by severalFEATURES !
1 . Availability. New DFTP runs on ITS? SAIL? TENEX?TDPS-10? and TDF'S-SO systems? it is also being
implemented on MULTICS.
c . Capacity. New DFTP uses a mass store? an Rmfex TeraeitM EMDR Y SYSTE M < TB M > . TH IS D EV ICE CURREN TLY PR D V IDES ANON-LINE CAPABILITY DF ABOUT £00 BILLION BITS? EXPANDABLEUP TO 3.£ TRILLION (10+ +1£) IN THE FULL
CONFIGURATION,
fls A CONSEQUENCE? MDST USERS HAVE HAD THEIR ALLOCATIONSINCREASED. HS ANDTHER CONSEQUENCE ? USERS MAY EXPECTNOTICEABLE DELAYS WHEN THEY FIRST ACCESS DATA? AS IT ISMOVED FROM TERTIARY TO SECONDARY STORAGE. THESE DELAYSMAY RANGE FROM A FEW SECONDS TO SEVERAL MINUTES? THEYWILL EE SIGNALLED BY A MESSAGE LIKE THE ONE APPEARING INTHE EXAMPLE AEOVE .New storage structure. The new DFTP collects files forA USER INTD ONE OR MOPE LARGE DATACDMPUTER FILES. THISNEW ORGANIZATION IS MUCH MDPE. SPACE-EFFICIENT THAN THEOLD? IT SHOULD ALSO SERVE TD MINIMIZE DELAYS FOR STAGINGFROM TERTIARY STORAGE.
4. Extended functions. Several new features follow fromDFTP"s new file organization:
a. File Sets. Commands which refer to files may nowspecify a set of files in place df a single file?by use of an asterisk in a file name field. thisoperates like a "wild card"? matching any valuein that field. fdr example?

c. File version numbers. DFTP ndw maintains anINTERNAL VERSION NUMBER? SO THAT SEVERALDIFFERENT VERSION DF THE SAME FILE MAY EE KEPT
DELETE ? UNDELETE ? and EXPUNGE . The effect df
DELETE is now revocable 5 until an EXPUNGECDMMAND IS EXECUTED? DELETED FILES MAY EE RESCUEDAND RETURNED TO NORMAL STATUS . EXPUNGE SHOULD EE
A FAIRLY INFREQUENT OPERATION? USED
TO

d. Increased directory information. The amount of
information kept with a file has been increasedsignificantly. dftp now keeps a local write
date? a dftp store date? file eytsize? length inbytes? full-length file names? and a checksum. This information contributes added convenience tousers. It also provides full-circle integrity
checking? with the same checksum computed and
checked throughout the file's handling by dftp.
Full decscriptions of these and other aspects of the new DFTPARE CONTAINED IN THE DOCUMENT MENTIONED ABOVE.
Details df Conversion
The new version of DFTP has existed for several weeks? undergoing
testing at CCA ? HARVARD? MIT-AI ? and SUAI . It is now being
INSTALLED AT ALL DFTP SITES THROUGHOUT THE NETWORK. USERS "' DATAIS BEING TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW FORMAT ON THE TEN BY CCA. THEOLD DATA? ACCESSIBLE BY THE OLD VERSION OF DFTP? WILL BE KEPT
AVAILABLE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK? BUT ALLOCATIONS WILL BE SET TO
PREVENT ANY FURTHER DATA FROM BEING STORED IN THE OLD SYSTEM?
ONCE A SITE'"S DATA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW VERSION. CCAWILL ATTEMPT TO ARRANGE WITH SITE LIAISONS SD THAT BOTH VERSIONS
WILL BE AVAILABLE TO USERS? WITH THE NEW VERSION CALLED NDFTPUNTIL THE SITE'S DATA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED? AND RENAMED TO DFTPRT THAT PDINT. SIMILARLY? THE OLD VERSION WILL EE CALLED DFTPEEFDRE? AND DDFTP AFTER THE TRANSFER AT EACH SITE.

% Toi ENGELMORE, BUCHANAN, FEIGENBAUM, LEDERBERG, LIEB, WHITE,To: DENDRAL, RINDFLEISCHA new version of DFTP is being installed at. all sites. ["hisversion is compatible at the command level for most users. However, there are g number of extensions and chanqps inrelatively infrequently used parts of th

system; people who% make extes ive use of subdirectories (using the CONNECT command) 0
may find themselves particularly affected.

The riP'v version of DFTP is distinguished by . v»r .fea tures :
I. Aval lability. New DFTP runs on ITS, SAIL. TF.NEX,TOPS- 1 3, and FOPS-20 systems; it.

also he innimplemented on MULTICS.
2. Capacity. New DFT^ uses a mass store, an Amoex TerabitMemory System (TBM), This device currently orovides enon-line capability of about 200 bi llion bits, expandableup to 3.1 trillion ( 10**12) in the full configuration. As a consequence, most users have had their allocationsincrease i. As another consequence, users may evnectnoticeable de lays when they first ar oe ss d. t . j s it {<=moved from tertiary to secondary storage. These delays

% may ranie from a few seconds to several minutes? theywill be signalled by a me like the one appearing inthe example above.
(P 3. Mew storage structure. The new DFTP collects files fora LLS£H into one or more laroe Datacomnuter files. ibisnew oraanization is much more snare-efficient than tho
" old; it should also serve to minimize delays for starinnfrom tertiary storage.
4. Extended functions. Several new fp.^turec follow from
" DFTP's new f i l° oroani zation: ma. File Sets. Commands which refer to files may now
specify a set of files in place of a single file,
" by use of an asterisk in a file n=>me field. Thisoperates like a "wild card", matchina any valuein that, field. For example,
" *PUi" FDD.*(FO').DDC)(F (D.MAC)
♦ (F(.).REL)(FOO.SAV)
stores all four files in the user's directory
which have a first name of MF00", with a sinol^i

b. File version numbers. DFTP now maintains an" internal version number, so that severaldifferent version of the same f 1 1° may be kept
" and retrieved individually.
c. DELETE, UNDELETE, and EXPUNGE. ihe effect ofDELETE is now revocable; until an EXPUNGEcommand is executed, deleted files may be rescuedand returned to normal status. EXPUNGE should hea fairly infrequent operation, used to reclaimspace when an allocation is fi lied with unwanted
mf i les .
md. Increased directory information. The amount of
information kept with a file has been increase^significantly. DFTP now keeps a local writedate, a DFTP store date, file bytsize, lenath inbytes, full-length file names, and a checksum. This information contributes added convenience tousers. It also provides full-circle integritychecking, with the sa~.e checksum computed andchecked throunhout the file's handling by DFTP.

Details of ConversionThe new version of DFTP has existed for several weeks, undergoingtesting at CCA, HARVARD, MIT-AI, and SUAI . It is now beinoinstalled at all DFTP sites throughout the network. Users' datais being transferred to the new format on the TBM by CCA. The

# once a site's -lata has been transferred to the new version. CCAwill attempt to arrange with site liaisons so that both versionswill be available to users, with the new version called NDFTP
. until the site's data has been transferred, and renamed to DFTPat that point. Similarly, the old version will be called DFTPbefore, and ODFiP after the transfer at each site.
