(4) The Data Files will NOT be collected at the end of the examination. Do NOT write your answers in the Data Files.

Situation

You are Frances Fan, a reporter working for a local newspaper.

You are going to listen to a radio phone in programme about removing a local park to make way for more public housing.

Before the recording is played, you will have five minutes to study the Question-Answer Book and the Data File for Part B1 and the Question-Answer Book and the Data File for Part B2. Remember you must choose to do the tasks in either Part B1 or Part B2. Do NOT attempt both Parts B1 and B2.

Dear Frances,

We want to follow this situation about the park in Shatin being turned into a public housing estate. There are three things I want you to do with regard to this:

A. Fact file

We want to show how important the park is to the local residents. Can you finish the rest of the information in the fact file? Look at your notes from the radio phone in show, the statistics from the Cultural and Leisure Services Department, the press conference excerpt from the International Parks’ Commission and the letters from concerned citizens.

B. Email to Lawrence Wong

Lawrence has designed a poster advertising the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations at Shatin Park, but there are a few mistakes on it. Can you check on the timetable the Cultural and Leisure Services Department sent to us, and also the plan of the park, and remind Lawrence to make the necessary changes.

C. Feature article

We want to make people aware of the threat to the park and encourage them to get involved in trying to protect it. Please can you write the article and try to include the following information:

1) A suitable title for the article (don’t just call it ‘Save our Park’)

2) An interesting opening and closing

3) A description of the types of things people do in the park, and why we should keep it

You can look on the Cultural and Leisure Services Department webpage, the Guide to Hong Kong Blog, and I have added some letters sent to the newspapers by concerned citizens. Don’t forget to check the information in your notes from the radio phone-in programme on this topic as well.

Blog — Guide to Hong Kong

We asked some of you to blog in and tell us what you do locally at the weekend. Lots of people have been in touch to tell us what they do. We’ve tried to categorize things a bit. Here are a few excerpts for you to enjoy. Don’t forget to get in touch.

From Yoyo, Tai Wai

I head down to my local park at the weekend just to hang out with my friends. There’s a great snack shop that sells the best fish balls in Hong Kong. We grab a snack, chill on the grass or listen to some of the local bands that play down there.

From Mui Mui, Fo Tan

I’m an artist and I love to spend my weekends painting and drawing. A great place to go is the park because people are usually relaxing or doing what makes them happy, and that makes a great day. I love watching the older generation practising their tai chi. It is very interesting.

From Miko, City One

I am trying to learn to fly a kite so I head down to my local park at the weekend because it’s the only place with plenty of open space. Kite flying looks easy, but it isn’t, especially as you get better and you start using bigger kites. I’m going to keep practising until I get really good, and then maybe I’ll try kite boarding at the beach.


Press conference excerpt from International Parks’ Commission

The International Parks’ Commission wishes to extend its congratulations to Hong Kong’s Cultural and Leisure Services Department for the excellent maintenance of their facilities in the 25 parks that they manage around the territory.

It was noted that in Hong Kong Park, the territories busiest park, there are more than 3 million visitors annually. This is probably due to the extensive, well stocked fish ponds and the attractive bird aviary. The well-kept gardens provide a stunning back drop for wedding photos. Overall, it is one of the most attractive parks in the territory.

Shatin Park is also an extremely popular park for people to relax in. A large amphitheatre allows a host of outdoor entertainment such as music from local bands and performances by various clubs and associations. On weekends there are a lot of informal groups practising tai chi or singing karaoke in the many secluded areas this park provides.


Letters from concerned citizens in newspaper

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my concerns about the proposal to remove Shatin park and turn it into government housing.

This would be a terrible mistake. My wife and I visit the park regularly, meeting friends there to enjoy traditional

Chinese dancing. WE often eat a snack from the snack shop and admire the flowers. It is a very relaxing place and

if it were replaced by even more flats we would have nowhere to go at the weekends. I hope the government will

reconsider this idea and leave our park alone.

Dear Sir,

I read last week that the government wants to close Shatin Park and put up some more flats. What a terrible idea! My friends and I meet there every week to perform. We are a new band and we have been playing in Shatin Park for over 6 months. More and more people are coming to hear us and we are getting very popular. If we lose our venue, where will we play?

Let’s stop this nonsense and save our park.
