ensile Impact - ASTM D1822
The amount of energy per unit area required to break a specimen under tensile impact. This
test is used for materials that are either too flexible or too thin to be tested with ASTM D2!.
Strain rate is somewhere between that of ASTM D2! and ASTM D!"#.
Before Impact
After Impact
The test specimen is carried by the pendulum of the tensile impact machine. The pendulum
impacts a set of an$ils so that the impact load is carried by the test specimen %see figures&.
Two test specimen types are used' Type S %Short& and Type ( %(ong&. Type S specimens
exhibit low extension and tend to produce brittle fractures. Type S specimen results are more
reproducible' but offer less differentiation among materials. Type ( specimens exhibit higher
extension.
