PERSONNEL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTMinor Spill If the area is adequately ventilated then a half mask respirator with dust cartridge or

dust mask must be worn. If there is any doubt as to the adequacy of ventilation or mist concentration then self-contained breathing apparatus must be worn

Major Spill Full face respirator with dust catridge must be worn with chemical protective suit and hood, chemical gloves and boots.

GENERAL ACTIONSAssess severity of incident and if necessary : Instruct personnel in the immediate vicinity of the spillage or leak to secure plant operation, without

risk to their own safety, and evacuate from the area, remaining upwind of spillage area. Keep all unauthorised personnel from area. Arrange to erect barriers around area if safe and practicable. Contact Head of Chemistry for advice. If area of spillage is enclosed, ventilate if possible.Arrange for any personnel contaminated with chemical to be decontaminated and taken for medical assistance if required. Ensure all personnel involved in responding to the incident are wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.Isolate the source of the spill or leak if safe and practicable. Contain any leakage or spillage to prevent the chemical from entering into any drains or waterways which directly discharges to the environment.

DISPOSALFollow procedures contained in this guidance. For further advice on treatment and disposal, contact the Head of Chemistry.

ENVIRONMENTALFly ash is categorized as B3 waste . It must not be discharged untreated to the environment. It is essential that any spill is contained and prevented from entering any surface drain, sewer, watercourse or soil

POTENTIAL SPILL LOCATIONS AND ACTIONS

ESP Area

Fly ash may spill in this area. The spill may cause of pipe leak or blockage or fail during transport. The spill may spread all over ESP floor. Care should be taken because there’s no bund wall.

Economiser hopper area and boiler ground floor underneathFly ash may spill in this area. The spill may cause of pipe leak or blockage or fail during transport. The spill may pour down to boiler ground floor under economiser hopper. Care should be taken because there’s no bund wall.

Along of transporting pipe to stock pileFly ash may spill in this area. The spill may cause of pipe leak or blow out pipe due to blockage. The spill may contaminate land and road along of pipe. Care should be taken because there’s no bund wall.

ACTIONMinor Spill Collect the spill by sweep gently. Scoop it slowly and discharge to closed

container. Then sent to ash disposalIf this is considered unsafe, follow major spill procedure

Major Spill Collect the spill by sweep gently. Scoop it slowly and discharge to closed container. Vacuum pump may be used if the amount of spillage is very much and cover wide area. Then sent it to ash disposalEnsure that there is only small amount of fly ash to be flushed and discharged to environment.
