Tapahtuman järjestävät yhteistyössä yleishyödyllinen kulttuuriyhdistys KAiKU ry, Kokeellisten Taiteiden Nomadinen Akatemia sekä Helsingin Kulttuurikeskus. Järjestäjät pidättävät oikeuden ohjelmamuutok-siin.

Audiovisuaalisia performansseja, elokuvia, videotaidetta, näyttelyitä ja paljon muuta... Viides audiovisuaalisen taiteen festivaali AAVE saapuu Helsinkiin huhtikuun toisella viikolla. Varjojen lepattaessa ja kuuloluita kaiuttelevien äänten sinkoutuessa sukellamme jälleen liikkuvan kuvan monimuotoisuuteen.

Pääohjelma järjestetään kulttuurikeskus Malmita-lolla ja tänä vuonna valtaamme myös Lasipalatsin alueen sekä levittäydymme kaupungille videopro-jektorein: Night of The Beamers on osallistava yleisötapahtuma, johon helsinkiläiset voivat liittyä omine videoprojisointeineen. Iltatapahtumat ja klubit levittäytyvät VJ-iltoineen ydinkeskustaan Mbariin ja Kansallisteatterin Lavaklubille sekä Bar Sandroon Kalliossa.

Rikas Live Cinema -ohjelmistomme antaa mo-neen suuntaan avautuvan, elävän kokemuksen. Vieraamme edustavat alojensa ehdotonta kärkeä. NYKY Ensemble esittää Sibelius-Akatemian kanssa tuottamansa Fausto Romitellin ja Paolo Pachi-nin video-oopperan An Index of Metals. Muusta ohjelmasta mainittakoon muun muassa ASTEP-BACK-duon intensiivinen kokeellinen teatteriesitys sekä Zahra Manin, Mia Zabelkan ja Mia Mäkelän huikea audiovisuaalinen konsertti. Italiasta saapuu jo tuntijoidensa keskuudessa kulttimainettakin nauttiva elektronisen musiikin konkariduo Retina.it.

Screeningohjelmiamme edustavat mm. japani-laisten elokuvaherkkujen Oishii-sarja, rohkeita kokeellisia teoksia esittävä En Garde!, suomalaisen mediataiteen levityskeskuksen AV-arkin 25-vuoti-sjuhlanäytös ja liikkuvan kuvan taiteilijoiden FixC osuuskunnan esityssarja, jossa esitetään seitsen-vuotisen toiminnan aikana mukana olleiden en-tisten ja nykyisten jäsenien teoksia. Kirsi Reinolan Yleisradiolle tekemää kuusiosaista tv-dokumentti-sarjaa suomalaisista mediataiteilijoista esitetään installaatiomuotoisena festariviikon ajan Helsingin Lasipalatsissa, jossa tapahtuu paljon muutakin kiinnostavaa.

Maljamme on tänä vuonna niin runsas että se ei tyhjentämällä tyhjenny. Olet sitten ihminen tai aave, suuntaahan festivaalillemme, jossa tapahtuu!

Audiovisual performances, films, video art, exhibitions and much else… the fifth festival of audiovisual arts will arrive to Helsinki in the second week of April. While the shadows flutter on the screens and the auditory bones echo in our skull we will experience and dive once again into the diversity of the moving images.

Our main program is organised in the cultural centre Malmitalo but this year we will also con-quer the Lasipalatsi square with many events. We will go to the city with video projectors: Night of The Beamers is a participatory pop-up event, where Helsinki citizens can join with their own projections. Evening venues with VJ sessions include Mbar in the center of the city, Lavaklubi (Stage club) in The Finnish National Theatre and Bar Sandro in Kallio.

Our rich Live Cinema -series opens up to many directions and our guests belong to the sharpest edge of their fields. The festival highlights inclu-des the video opera An Index of Metals by Fausto Romitelli and Paolo Pachini, co-produced and performed by Sibelius Academy`s NYKY Ensemb-le. The program includes an experimental theatre piece by duo ASTEPBACK, film performances and a multimedia concert by Zahra Mani, Mia Zabelka and Mia Mäkelä. The pioneer duo of electronic music Retina.it. will also join our line-up. In our screening program we continue showing Japanese cinematic delicatessen Oishii, the audacious experimental works En Garde! and a special screening celebrating the 25 years of AV-arkki - The Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art. FixC Cooperative of Finnish moving image artists will screen a special program including works by its former and current mem-bers. Kirsi Reinola´s documentary on six Finnish moving image artists titled Mediataide (“Media art”) will be shown during the festival days in an installation form in Lasipalatsi, together with many other events worth of visiting.

En Garde! -sarjamme esittelee teoksia, jotka rikko-vat rohkeasti audiovisuaalisten teosten tavanomai-simpia rajoja. Turner-palkitun, “instagram-sukupol-ven” digitaalista kuvakerrontaa installaatioissaan ilmentävän 35-vuotiaan Laure Prouvostin pitkä elokuva The Wanderer (2013) aloittaa festivaalim-me screeningohjelman. Näytämme sen yhdessä kahden hänen videoteoksensa kanssa. AAVE esit-tää myös puolalaisen taiteilijan ja elokuvantekijän Wilhelm Sasnalin hämmästyttäviä liikkuvan kuvan teoksia alkusoittona hänen mahdolliselle tulevalle vierailulleen Helsinkiin vuodelle 2015.

EN GARDE!

Our En Garde! -screenings present new audacious works, which break the usual borders. The works by Laure Prouvost, 35 year old Turner Prize -winner “who combines digital imagery for the ´Instagram generation´ with atmospheric installations”, will begin our screening program. We show her featu-re-length film The Wanderer (2013) and two of her video art works. In this year AAVE will also screen moving image works by the Polish painter and filmmaker Wilhelm Sasnal as a prelude to his visit in Helsinki, hopefully in 2015.

Laure Prouvost (s. 1978 Lillessä, Ranskassa) tunnetaan taiteilijan roolia ja keinoja osana tai-demaailmaa sekä outoja, ennalta-arvaamattomia kytkentöjä asioiden välillä pohtivista videoista, elo-kuvista ja installaatioista, joissa yhdistyvät rikkaat tarinakerrostumat ja surrealistiset hetket. Koosteen yhteiskesto on noin 85 minuuttia.

Laure Prouvost (b. 1978 in Lille, France) is known for videos, films and installations in which she ponders the role and the means of an artist as part of the art world and strange, unpredictable con-nections between things characterised by richly layered stories, translation, and surreal moments. Duration of the compilation is around 85 minutes.

OWT (2007, 03:00)The video is of a self-proclaimed ‘curator of artist’s video works’ explaining what he sees as the role and function of video art, quoting Walter Benjamin along the way. His speech, though, is spliced and reworded so as to become almost incomprehensible. There are distracting jump-cuts to people in pools and farm animals, while the voiceover is humorously mis-subtitled.

IT, HEAT, HIT (2010, 06:00)It, Heat, Hit propels a story where the images of a swimming frog or snowy street scene are followed by statements of love and implied violence. The mood of the film gradually becomes darker and more unsettling.

THE WANDERER (The Directors Cut) (2013, 75:00)“When I double speak, laughing and vomiting by the swing-bridge, then my language exits through a trapdoor.” Laure Prouvost’s feature film The Wanderer is based on a text by artist Rory Macbeth, who translated a Kafka novella from German into English without any knowledge of the German language and without a dictionary. On the way between languages, the original narrative is transformed, if not lost, in translation.

Tarvitsen molempia medioita.” Wilhelm Sasnalin tarkka ympäröivän todellisuuden huomiointi on synnyttänyt filmille tallentuneita otoksia elämästä, jotka koskettavat ja kommentoivat aikaamme.

Wilhelm Sasnal (s. 1972 Tarnówissa, Puolassa) opis-keli maalausta Krakovan taideakatemiassa ja on vii-meisen kymmenen vuoden aikana noussut yhdeksi merkittävimmistä nykytaiteilijoista Euroopassa. Viime vuosina Sasnal on vaimonsa Anka Sasnalin kanssa tehnyt 35mm täyspitkät elokuvat Huba (2013), Aleksander (2012) ja It Looks Pretty From a Distance (2011). Me esitämme kuitenkin festivaalil-lamme koosteen Sasnalin 16mm lyhytelokuvia.

“For me painting is an introverted activity, which demands my complete attention. When I’m filming, I notice that I am much more open to the world and that I get more back. I need both media.” Wilhelm Sasnal’s acute observation of the reality that surrounds him produces slices of time preser-ved on film that touch and comment on our time.

Wilhelm Sasnal (b. 1972 in Tarnów, Poland) studied painting at the the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts and has become one of the most important European contemporary artists in the last decade. Recently, Sasnal and his wife, Anka Sasnal have made 35mm feature length films Huba (2013), Aleksander (2012) and It Looks Pretty From a Distance (2011). We present a compilation of his 16mm short films.

Liikkuvan kuvan ja elävän esityksen yhteyttä tutkivan Live Cinema -osiomme avaa kuvataiteilija Minna Pölläsen ja Jukka Hautamäen audiovisuaa-linen live-installaatio Dernier Cri, joka käsittelee mieleenpainuvasti ympäristön ja ihmisen suhdetta. Sibelius-Akatemian NYKY Ensemblen esittämä Fausto Romitellin ja Paolo Pachinin video-ooppera An Index of Metals yhdistää vaikuttavasti ooppe-ralaulun, kamariorkesterin, elektronisen musiikin ja videotaiteen. Kyseessä on Romitellin viimeisen sävellyksen täyden live-version Suomen ensi-ilta. Musiikki ja liikkuva kuva yhdistyvät myös Zahra Manin, Mia Zabelkan ja Mia Mäkelän yhteisessä esityksessä.

Analogisen kauden ihmeisiin vie Retina.it (Lino Monaco & Nicola Buono), jolla analogisten syntetisaattorien manipuloituihin ääniin liittyvät kenttä-äänitykset ja esineiden äänet. ASTEPBACKin Andrea Saggiomo ja Gaëlle Cavalieri käyttävät kokeellisessa teatteriesityksessään Amorfia kahta super-8 -filmiprojektoria sekä diaprojektoria. Vaa-salaisten filmiperformanssiaktiivien Britt Kootstran ja Arvid van der Rijtin sekä Dragos Alexandrescun esitykset kruunaavat Live Cineman kokonaisuuden.

LIVE CINEMA

Our Live Cinema -program presents artists using moving images and live performance. In our ope-ning program artists Minna Pöllänen and Jukka Hautamäki will present an audiovisual live-ins-tallation Dernier Cri, which is a powerful work on contemporary ecological themes. The program´s highlights include An Index of Metals, a video ope-ra by Fausto Romitelli and Paolo Pachini, perfor-med by NYKY Ensemble from Sibelius-Academy. The full live version of Romitelli´s last composition combines opera singing, chamber orchestra and electronic music with video art. Zahra Mani´s, Mia Zabelka´s and Mia Mäkelä´s set of sound and video landscapes is a many-layered aural and visual experience.

Retina.it (Lino Monaco & Nicola Buono) brings to-gether the manipulated sounds of analogical synt-hetisators, field recordings and sounds of different objects. Andrea Saggiomo ja Gaëlle Cavalieri from the group ASTEPBACK use two super-8 –film pro-jectors and a slide projector in their experimental theatre piece Amorfia. The shows by Vasa-based film performance activists Britt Kootstra & Arvid van der Rijt and Dragos Alexandrescu will enrich the experience our Live Cinema program.

Dernier Cri on kuvataiteilijoiden Minna Pöllänen (s.1980) ja Jukka Hautamäki (s.1971) audiovisu-aalinen installaatio. Teos koostuu still-valokuviin perustuvasta videoprojisoinnista, sekä Hautamäen livenä tuottamasta elektronisesta äänimaailmasta. Hautamäki käyttää työskentelyssään löydettyjä ja käytöstä poistettuja tavaroita sekä elektroniikkaa, ääntä ja videota. Hänen teoksiaan on ollut esillä mm. Baltic Biennalessa Pietarissa ja Avatar Cent-ressa Québecissa. Pöllänen työskentelee valoku-van ja paikkasidonnaisten teosten kanssa. Hänen teoksiaan on ollut esillä mm. Guest Projectissa Lontoossa (2014), Mäntän Kuvataideviikoilla (2013) ja Brooklyn Bridge Parkissa New Yorkissa (2013).

Dernier Cri is an audiovisual installation by visual artists Minna Pöllänen (b.1980) and Jukka Hautamäki (b.1971). A video projection consisting of still images is accompanied by live electronic soundscape by Hautamäki. Hautamäki works with used and discarded consumer goods, electronics, sound and video. Recent exhibitions include Baltic Biennale in St. Petersburg and Avatar Centre in Québec. Pöllänen works with photography and site-specific projects. Recent exhibitions include Guest Projects, London (2014), Mänttä Art Fair (2013) and Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York (2013).

Retina.It:in mukaan inhimillinen mielikuvitus käyt-tää usein vain todellisuuden keinotekoisen kuvan valheelliseen uusintamiseen. Aineen todellisuus it-sessään on kuitenkin avoin ja irrationaalinen. Siksi Retina.it pyrkii näyttämään esityksissään video- ja ääniteknologian avulla muutetun aineen raken-

muodoiksi. Näin syntynyttä mallia vaivataan kuin taikinaa ulkoisilla taajuuksilla, jotka muuntavat sen nestemäiseksi ja kaoottiseksi aineeksi. Lopputulos on lähellä muodotonta ja voimakasäänistä, aistit sekoittavaa synestesiaa.

Retina.it on italialaisten Lino Monacon ja Nicola Buonon elektronisen musiikin duo Vesuviuksen alueelta Napolista. Duo on työskennellyt yhdessä 1990-luvun alusta asti ja tutkinut analogisten syntetisaattoreiden ominaisuuksia kehitellen omaa soundiaan. Modulaaristen ja digitaalisten syntetisaattoreiden äänten manipulaatio, sekä eri-laisista objekteista ja ympäristöstä äänitetyt äänet johdattavat duoa oman äänimaailman jatkuvassa etsinnässä.

According to Retina.it human imagination is partly just a phony simulation of reality. It don´t leave the room for irrationality faced with data that appear faithful to the matter surrounding us. Retina.it, in its constant audio and video research, aims to alter the shaped structure, reducing it to a grid of visions, in an elaborate 3D. A schematic repre-sentation of the static mold, repeatedly kneaded

chaotic substance. The result converges in formless and loud synesthesia of deconstructed geometric forms.

Retina.it is an electronic musicians duo of the Ita-lian Lino Monaco and Nicola Buono from the area of Mount Vesuvius in Naples. The duo has worked together since the early 1990’s, exploring the capabilities of analog synths and developed their own idea of sound. The undifferentiated manipula-tion of sounds extracted from modular and digital synths or the recorded sounds of objects and en-vironment, leads this original duo to a continuous search of a sonic identity.

The NYKY Ensemble is a contemporary music ensemble formed in autumn 2009 and operating under the aegis of the Sibelius Academy. With its regular concerts it serves as a forum for modern music projects initiating students in contemporary musical trends. The line-up depends on the works to be performed. Each concert is preceded by a rehearsal period led by a musician specialised in contemporary music. The ensemble has worked under the artistic direction of Heikki Nikula, Heini Kärkkäinen, Jouko Laivuori, Anssi Karttunen, Mikael Helasvuo, Tuija Hakkila, Jukka Savijoki, Eija Kankaanranta, Jean-Baptiste Barrière, Anu Komsi, Ilmo Ranta, Max Savikangas, Tim Ferchen and Minna Pensola.

Zahra Mani (field recordings, bass guitar and electronics), Mia Zabelka (electric violin, vocals and electronics) and Mia Mäkelä (visuals) have been working together in duo, trio and ensemb-le constellations for five years. This is their first performance together in Helsinki, where they will present new intermedial work in which visuals are generated by midi information and oscilla-tions of the live audio. The musicians react to the dynamic visual space in a synaesthetic, complex, shifting, dense but differentiated electro-acoustic performance.

Nyt nähtävässä ensiesiintymisessä Suomes-sa taiteilijat esittävät intermediaalisen teoksen jossa visuaalit syntyvät midi-informaation ja liveäänen värähtelyn kautta. Muusikot reagoivat dynaamiseen visuaaliseen tilaan tässä moniaisti-sessa, kompleksissa, muuttuvassa, tiiviissä mutta samaan aikaan eriytyneessä elektro-akustisessa performanssissa.

Mia Zabelka (AT), sound artist, violinist and vocalist from Vienna, with Czechish, Jewish and French family background, lives in the Austrian region of southern Styria. As an experimental musician and improviser she has developed a unique language based on the de- and reconstruction of the violin’s sonic possibili-ties, expanding the instrument using live electronic devices and innovative performance techniques.

Zahra Mani (UK/ PK/AT) lives in Austria and Croatia. As a composer and multi-instrumentalist, she creates pulsing, shifting soundscapes derived from her burgeoning archive of instrumental and found sound that she has been recording and developing since 2002. Her work focuses on liminal spaces, where field recordings, voices, instruments, machines, the sea, the wind, animals and landscapes provide the acoustic basis for auditory worlds.

Mia Mäkelä works in the fields of real-time audiovisual performance, experimental video and documenta-ry. Her work has been described as “A dark delirium of images, a disintegrated vision on a complex world – a digital version of William Blake’s poetry”. Her style ranges from minimal abstractions to multilayered compositions following a dreamlike narrative audiovisual journey.

(1846–1892) termiin vuodelta 1883, ja teoksemme samanniminen kappale on omistettu hänelle. Eri-

välittömään menestykseen ja projektista joka uu-distuu jatkuvasti maailmaa jossa sykkii, väistellen yrityksiä tulla määritellyksi, on inspiroinut teosta.

Puhtaan formalistisen taiteellisen tutkimuksen sijaan valmistumme altistumaan jännitykselle, ole-maan se jännitys. Performanssi on järjestetty niin, että jokainen osanen on kutsu toisen syleilyyn. Valo kutsuu ääntä, liike kutsuu valoa ja tietysti,

tiettyä sotasuunnitelmaa ei tunnu olevan, paitsi se likainen ja sinnikäs syttyminen, joka paljastaa kuitenkin vain näkyvillä olevan. Improvisoimme näiden ehtojen varassa ja usein menetämmekin ajatuksen juoksun: yritämme siis olla alttiita sille mitä tapahtuu, kun päätöksenteko tai odotukset määrätystä kohtalosta eivät ole läsnä.

Japanilaisen elokuvan parhaimmistoa esitetään jälleen Oishii-sarjassa kolmen pitkän elokuvan verran. Tetsuaki Matsuen Live Tape (2009) on kuin 74-minuuttinen musiikkivideo. Kovapintaisesta graafisesta väkivallasta tunnetun Kitano Takeshin lyyrinen A Scene at the Sea (1991) kuuluu suositun ohjaajan elokuvista vähemmän tunnettuihin. Kol-mas japanilainen elokuvamme on animaatiotakin sisältävä Ishii Katsuhiton The Taste of Tea (2004), jossa kolmen sukupolven perheessä arki on yhtä elämän eksentrisen sykkeen juhlaa.

The cinematic delicatessen from Japan will be served in the Oishii series presenting three feature films. Tetsuaki Matsue´s Live Tape (2009) is like a 74 minutes long music video, where the folk singer Kenta Maeno leads the viewer through the streets of Tokio. Kitano Takeshi might be best known for his movies with graphic violence, but this time we show his lyrical A Scene at the Sea (1991). Ishii Kat-suhito is the director of our third delicatessen. In Taste of Tea (2004), the everyday problems of three generations reveals the eccentric beat of life itself.

KITANO TAKESHI (s. 1947) Japanin kaikkivaltiaalle Takeshi “Beat” Kitanolle mikään ammatti ei ole vieras. Kitano on elokuva-ohjaaja, koomikko, näyttelijä, käsikirjoittaja, laula-ja, runoilija ja taidemaalari. Hän on jättänyt käden-jälkensä yakuza-genreen (Sonatine, 1993; Hana-bi, 1997), slapstick-komediaan (Minna Yatteruka, 1994) ja on jopa suunnitellut videopelejä. Hänellä on oma tuotantoyhtiö Office Kitano ja vuodesta 2005 lähtien professuuri Tokion taideyliopistossa.

For the almighty Takeshi “Beat” Kitano no profes-sion is strange. He is a film director, comedian, actor, singer, entertainer, poet and painter. He has left his signature in yakuza genre (Sonatine, 1993; Hana-Bi, 1997), slapstick comedy (Minna Yatteruka, 1994) and designed even video games. He owns his own talent agency and production company Office Kitano and is a professor in Tokyo University of the Arts.

MATSUE TETSUAKI (s. 1977)Korealaisille vanhemmille Tokiossa vuonna 1977 syntynt Matsue valmistui elokuvantekijäksi do-kumenttielokuvallaan Annyong Kimchee vuonna 1999. Siinä hän käsitteli korealais-japanilaista zainichi-taustaansa. Hän jatkoi tutkimuksiaan vuonna 2009 valmistuneessa dokumenttielokuvas-sa Annyong Yumika, joka kertoo aikuisviihdetähti Yumika Hayashista. Pettävän yksinkertaisissa elo-

kuvissaan Matsue kääntää ympäri kliseet, tutkien niin dokumenttielokuvan kuin aikuisvideoidenkin konventioita. Hän tuo koskettavasti näkyviin etni-sen identiteetin kysymykset sekä näyttää ohjaajan ja hänen kohteidensa epätasaisen valtasuhteet. Matsuen Flashback Memories 3D (2012) esitettiin viime vuonna Helsingissä Cine Aasian avajaiselo-kuvana. Dokumenttielokuvien ohella Matsue on tehnyt myös mangasarjakuvaa Virgin Classroom yhdessä mangataiteilija Tomohiro Koizumin kanssa.

Matsue was born in Tokyo to Korean parents in 1977. He graduated from filmmaking at the Japane-se Academy of Moving Images with his revealing and well-received 1999 documentary Annyong Kimchee, which confessed his zainichi (Korean-Ja-panese) heritage. He would continue this explorati-on with his 2009 documentary Annyong Yumika about legendary AV star Yumika Hayashi. Matsue´s deceptively simple films subvert and explore the clichés and conventions of the documentary and Adult Video genres, while at the same time touching upon areas such as personal and ethnic identity and the unbalanced power relationship between the director and his subject. Besides his documentary filmmaking, Matsue has co-written a manga Virgin Classroom with manga artist Tomohi-ro Koizumi.

ISHII KATSUHITO (s. 1966)Ishiin pitkän elokuvan debyytti Sharkskin Man & Peach Hip Girl perustui mangataiteilija Minetaro Mochizu-kin visuaaliseen romaaniin. Elokuvasta tuli katsomismenestys Japanin toiseksi suosituimpana elokuvana vuonna 1999. Seuraavana vuonna Ishii uusi menestyksensä elokuvalla Party 7 (2000). Vuosien 2001 ja 2002 aikana kirjoittaja-ohjaaja loi sarjan lyhytelokuvia mukaan lukien 3D-animoitu dialogipohjainen Hal & Bons ja 2D-avaruusooppera Trava. Muiden töiden ohella Ishii on esimerkiksi osallistunut Production IG:n tuottamaan animaatiojaksoon Quentin Tarantinon elokuvassa Kill Bill.

Ishii´s feature debut Sharkskin Man & Peach Hip Girl was based on the visual novel by cult manga artist Minetaro Mochizuki. The film became the second highest grossing title of the year 1999 in Japan. Ishii quickly followed his success with Party 7 (2000). Between the years 2001 – 2002, the writer-director created a series of short films including the 3D animated dialogue piece Hal & Bons and the 2D animated space opera Trava. Among other things, Ishii also found the time to collaborate with Production IG for the animation sequence of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.

Shigerun päättäväisyys kiinnittää lopulta läheisen surffikaupan omistajan huomion. Tämä houkuttelee hänet kilpailemaan paikallisessa kisassa. The third film directed by Kitano does bear all his hallmarks, with its pared-down approach to storytelling and its subtle use of editing. Deaf and dumb teenager Shigeru is a dustman by day. After finding a surfboard he finds himself drawn to the waves accompanied by his girlfriend, the equally mute Takako. He spends his every spare hour trying to master the sea. His determination catches the eye of the owner of a nearby surf shop who persuades him to enter a local contest. Kitano’s film unreels as an idyllic series of snapshot remi-niscences of a perfect summer.

Live Tape is a miraculous live documentary capturing Maeno’s New Year’s Day nomadic guerrilla show in a single 74-minute take.

Äiti Yoshiko on animaattori ja hänen miehensä hypnoterapeutti. 8-vuotias Sachiko yrittää vapautua itsensä jättiläismäisestä versiosta, vanhemman veljen Hajimen kamppail-lessa rakkaushuoliensa kanssa. Muihin perheen-jäseniin lukeutuu isoisä, eriskummallinen, mutta paremman elämäntavan etsinnöissään myös ehkä elokuvan tarkkanäköisimmäksi osoittautuva hahmo. Elokuvaa on luonnehdittu surreaaliseksi versioksi Ingmar Bergmanin elokuvasta Fanny ja Alexander.

Tänä vuonna osoitamme Virvatulissa kiinnostusta erityisesti paikkoihin liittyviä tuntemuksia kohtaan. Matkaajat kohtaavat uusia paikkoja ja uusia olen-toja. Paikka saattaa merkitä kuitenkin myös sosiaa-lista verkostoa ja liikkua silloin tuntijansa mukana. Kameran avulla tilaa voidaan tutkia uudella tavalla. Vastasyntyneelle jokainen paikka on uusi.

Ghost Lights is a compilation of AV-arkki’s new Finnish moving image works from 2013 selected by AAVE Festival. This year we have been particularly intrigued with a sense of place. Travellers encounter new places and new creatures. The place can be related to social networks and travel with you. With the help of a camera, space can be explored in a new way. For a newborn every place is new.

Vuonna 2007 perustetun liikkuvan kuvan taitei-lijoiden FixC-osuuskunnan näytännössä esittäy-tyvät entiset ja nykyiset osuuskunnan jäsenet teoksineen. Näytöksen aloittaa Jarkko Räsäsen dokumentointi muurahaisen urakasta ja sen päättää Pekka Sassin jylhän vavisuttava tulkinta spam-viestistä. Näytöksen aikana kuljetaan öisistä tunnelmista koskettavien itkuvirsien kautta maise-mallisiin ja kosmisiin tapahtumiin, sekä uppoudu-taan sisäisten tilojen materiaalisiin olosuhteisiin.

FixC Co-operative of moving image artists presents works by previous and current members to celeb-rate its’ seven years of existence. The screening begins with Jarkko Räsänen´s documentation of the work of an ant and it ends with Pekka Sassi´s impressive interpretation of a spam mail letter. Between these works we travel from nocturnal moods via touching mourning hymns to the events in the landscape and of the cosmic scale, not for-getting the material conditions of inner spaces.

AAVE takes temporarily over the Lasipalatsi square during the festival week with its’ info point and additional festival program. Frans Tihveräinen´s Augmented reality -workshop will be organised together with Kaupunkiverstas. Kirsi Reinola´s TV-series for YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) on Finnish media art will be shown in an exhibition form in the former Kirja bookstore space next to Bio Rex. Ulu Braun´s celebrated work Westcoast (2009) will be screened in loop on the outdoor wall of Lasipalatsi square. Matti Niinimäki´s participatory installation Hiitola will be installed in The Black Box, an exhibition space at the container on the square. The creative coding -workshops organized by Irina Spicaka will culminated in an experimental, audio-visual jam session in Mbar.

Welcome to the exhibition opening on Monday, 7th April, starting at 6pm!

Kirsi Reinola`s six-part TV documentary series for YLE about Finnish media artists is presented as an installation during the festival at Lasipalatsi in Helsinki next to Bio Rex. The series presents a variety of the different technologies, styles and eras of media art approached with common sense and humour. Episodes include either the whole works or clips and documentation for the works. The main focus is in the art works and the artists thoughts about media art in general.

The series shows, for instance, Anssi Kasitonni filming his space musical at Kuhmalahti Workers’ Hall, Mika Taanila running the Expanded Pori live performance with numerous projectors and Mar-jatta Oja experimenting projections in her studio. The first episodes are broadcasted also at Yle Tee-ma TV channel starting from Wednesday, March 26. The series has been produced by Silva Mysterium Oy, together with the Finnish Art Association.

An audio-visual world which visitors can step into evolves during the exhibition as mysterious hiisi-creatures, created by children in an open workshop, are mo-ving in. The project is produced by a collective of three women, Jääskeläinen, Ohtonen & Väliheikki.

Media artist Matti Niinimäki works in the intersec-tions of research, interactive installations, experi-mental electronics and real time sound and video. There’s always room for humor in his work, as well as for the insight of the people experiencing it.

Ulkoprojisointi looppina Lasipalatsin aukiolla. Westcoast (2009, 07:20) on Hieronymus Boschin mielikuvitukselliset maalaukset mieleen tuova kollaasi ja panoraamavideo rantaviivasta “Rot-terdamin ja Sydneyn välillä”. Primordiaalisista sopasta se panoroi ylikansallisen talousmaailman arkkitehtoniseen eklektismiin ja porkkanaa syövän jättiläisvirtahevon ohi. Lopussa tummasävyinen henkinen vesireitti johtaa valtavaan luolaan.

Berliinissä asuva ja työskentelevä taiteilija ja elokuvantekijä Ulu Braun liittää moninaiset lainauksensa valtaviin, pikareskimaisiin sommi-telmiin, jotka silmukoituvat loputtomasti toistensa ympärillä. Braunin projisoinnit hypnotisoivat katsojansa elävyydellään ja isolla mittakaaval-laan. Rituaalimaisen toiston sijaan Braun luottaa yllätykseen, tilan absurdeihin päällekkäisyyksiin ja hulluihin jaksotuksiin. Braun hyödyntää uusimpien videoteknologioiden laajenevaa potentiaalina äärimmilleen. Hänen videoinstallaatioitaan on näytetty mm. Kunstmuseum Bonnissa, KunstWer-kessä Berliinissä, Kunsthalle Wienissä ja GoMAssa Glasgowssa.

Outdoor loop projection at Lasipalatsi Square. Westcoast (2009, 07:20) is a panorama video of a surreal version of the coastline “between Rotterdam and Sydney”, not far away from the landscapes of Hieronymus Bosch. Starting from a bubbling primordial soup, it pans along an wa-terfront of transnational financial architecture and a giant hippo eating carrots. After a dark spiritual waterway, the panorama ends in a huge cave.

Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Ulu Braun inserts his manifold quotations into large and pica-resque schemata that can ultimately loop around on themselves. Braun’s projections are mesme-rizing because of their stunning vividness and their walk-in scale. They keep us riveted less through incantatory repetition than through the promise of surprise, of absurd spatial juxtapositions and lunatic sequencing. Braun exploits the expansive potential of the latest video technologies to their utmost. His video installations have been shown in i.e. Kunstmuseum Bonn, KunstWerke Berlin, Kunsthalle Wien and GoMA Glasgow.

AR-keinoin on mahdollista liittää mm. painettuun sisältöön monenlaisia digitaalisia lisämausteita. The history and evolution of AR will be briefly covered, as well as multiple use cases and possibilities. Well what is AR anyway? In a nutshell, it is augmen-ting reality with digital overlay-material. With the help of this technology, it is possible to attach almost any type of digital media to printed graphic material. Many fresh AR-cases will be experienced, ideas will be thrown, and at the end, we will aug-ment reality ourselves for real! The best AR-creati-on will be rewarded with a pair of movie tickets.

Rajansa tietysti kaikella, radiohittejä tai diskomusiikkia ei tulla kuulemaan. Yksi asia on kuitenkin varmaa, tulet tanssimaan! Varm on monialainen audiovisuaalinen taiteilija joka pitää minimalistisista mutta merkityksellisistä visuaaleista. Tällä hetkellä hän keskittyy maisteriopintoihin Aalto yliopiston Media Labissa.

One thing is for shure, you will dance!Varm is an interdisciplinary audiovisual artist who likes minimalistic but meaningful visuals. At the moment he is mostly concentrated in his Master studies in Aalto University Media Lab.

The project curated by Irina Spicaka (LV/FI) is targeted for visual and sound artists, designers, coders, experienced performers of A/V and VJ scene as well as beginners interested to participate in Raspberry Pi + openFrameworks and Raspberry Pi + Pure Data workshops, which will result in a collaborative audio-visual jam session. We believe it is a good way to improve one’s skills and understanding about creating works in a form of audiovisual performance.

Krisjanis Rijnieks (LV/FI) will hold a workshop for building visual synthesizers using Raspberry Pi and openFrameworks, and Sébastien Piquemal (FR/FI) for building portable instruments with Raspberry Pi and Pure Data. “Hiitola occupants” is a free animation workshop for for children of the age 7-12 years and their adults, with drawing, crafts and animation. Kun valitsemme objektiivin filmipohjaista kuvaa varten, sijoitamme audiovisuaalisen teoksen galle-riatilaan tai osaksi esitystä, millaisia päätöksiä teemme? Siirtymä analogisesta digitaaliseen teknologiaan on merkinnyt myös välineiden automaattisten ominaisuuksien lisääntymistä. Onko se vain hyvä asia? Seminaari järjestetään yhteistyössä Kuvataideakatemian kanssa.

Moving image technologies have many-folded influence on our perception and the artist´s tools are up-dated constantly. What kind of decisions have to be made when choosing the tools of artistic expression, i.e. choosing the lens for a particular kind of image, installing the audiovisual work in the gallery space or showing it as a part of performance? The shift from analogical to digital technology has increased the automatic properties of tools. Is it just a good thing? The seminar is organised together with The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts.

Lightsleeper I koostuu maalauksellisesta kuva- ja ääniaallokosta, jotka kuljettavat yleisön läpi tummanpuhuvien kuvavirtojen. Lightsleeper I on luontodokumentti lo-fina, pimeyden illuusio, floran ja faunan maaginen kohtaaminen. Kuva ja musiikki yhdistelevät ennakkoluulottomasti eri genrejen eteerisimpiä ideoita.

Lightsleeper I is a cinematic ocean of sounds and images. A wildlife documentary in lo-fi, an illusion of darkness, and the magic of flora and fauna. The images and music combines ethereal ideas of various genres with an open mind.

SSuvereeni is a VJ and a media artist. Even though her visuals can be viewed at underground clubs, Lightsleeper is a genuine art production. Nirva has an education in classical music, is a full-time MC, virgin of deejaying and a passionate protector of musique romantique. In Lightsleeper I he effort-lessly combines his vast knowledge of music into a revolutionary whole.

JÄRJESTÄJÄT / ORGANIZERSKaiku – kansainvälisen kulttuurin seura ry is a cultural non-profit association that organized cinema club Kino Kaiku in Cultural Centre Malmitalo during years 2008-2013. Programme included screenings of movies and videoart, combined with lectures and discussions. We screen classics, art-house, indie and experimental titles in both digital and film formats.To improve knowledge of audiovisual arts the club meetings are always free of charge. http://www.kinokaiku.com

Helsingin kulttuurikeskus / Malmitalo is a cultural centre for North and Northeast Helsinki. Each year around 400 cultural events are held at Malmitalo, including concerts, film screenings and theatre productions. Malmitalo’s gallery and exhi-bition walls present new exhibitions each month. In addition to the Helsinki City Cultural Office, which is responsible for the cultural programme, Malmitalo also houses a library and adult education centre, as well as art schools providing art education especially for children and young people, including a music school, a dance school, a visual arts school, and a handicrafts school.
