WelcomeDear Delegate,

We are delighted to welcome you to the European Chinese Language Teaching Conference 2016.

In June 2015, Macmillan Education, the AULC and the University of Bath launched this event under the name ‘Chinese Teaching in the Western World.’ Following its success and positive feedback from our delegates, we decided to run the conference again.

This year’s conference theme is Adapting to the Needs to International Learners. Over the next two days, practitioners and academics in the field of Chinese language teaching will explore the challenges of meeting student expectations, specifically in Western learning environments, and of maintaining enthusiasm and motivation for learning Chinese. There will be a strong focus on best practice, and plenty of opportunity to discuss, debate and network.

We hope you enjoy it!

With best wishes,

Alison Castle, Macmillan Education

Summaries 摘要Friday 1 July 7月1日 星期五

Keynote: Applying Intercultural Communication and Creativity to CLT [RM A09] Prof. Jin Lixian, De Montfort University Dr. Kan Qian, The Open University (E)

Summary: Our talk gives a brief introduction of the concepts of Intercultural Communication and Creativity (ICC) in the context of language teaching. The talk will focus on practical as well as pedagogical principles which language teachers can use in the design and delivery of Chinese lessons with intercultural communication and creativity in mind. Examples will be given in applying practical principles (what we call ‘7 REs’) and pedagogical principles for ICC activities using materials from some existing CLT textbooks. We will also look at The Open University’s Beginners’ Chinese course as an example to illustrate how we can embed intercultural learning in the course design so as to help learners develop their intercultural skills individually and as a group. We intend to run the session in an interactive way so that good practices from Chinese language teachers will be shared.

Prof. JIN Lixian is Chair Professor of Linguistics and Intercultural Learning and Director of Centre for Intercultural Research in Communication and Learning at De Montfort University, UK. She has taught ELT, intercultural communication (IC) and clinical linguistics and given teacher training in many countries. S2: Successful Learning of Chinese Pronunciation in the Flipped Classroom [RM B07] Drs. Marlies Rijbroek and Lex Stomp, Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands (E)

Summary: We will present an innovative approach to pronunciation teaching that will be of interest to every teacher of Chinese. We have developed a ‘Flipped Classroom’ blended learning course with a focus on clear instructions and active learning. Pronunciation development is simulated in an immersive environment. Learning is supported by authentic materials, available ‘24/7’. Through these materials, students prepare for their classes in advance, and are therefore more actively involved in the lectures and engaged in classroom activities. This didactical concept shows that learning Chinese pronunciation in an educational context outside China can be successful.

Drs. Marlies Rijbroek (Ph.D. candidate) is a lecturer and a senior consultant in modern foreign languages at the teacher education department of Windesheim University of Applied Sciences.Marlies is leading the development of a teaching program for Chinese language and culture. She is currently carrying out PhD research on Chinese pronunciation teaching and learning, and is developing an effective learning environment for Chinese.

Mr. Lex Stomp (MA Education in Geography, MA Education in Social Sciences) is director of the International Department Education of the Faculty of Human Movement and Education at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. In his career, he has worked as a geography teacher in various schools until assuming his post at Windesheim as senior consultant in educational leadership and school development. He is both manager of the teacher education department for primary education and for secondary and vocational education. He is also responsible for liaising with Chinese partner universities in Xi’an and Shanghai and for introducing programs for Chinese in education.

S2: 用反转课堂成功学习中文发音 [RM B07] 荷兰 温德斯汉姆应用科学大学 Drs. Marlies Rijbroek, Lex Stomp (E)

Drs. Mar l ies Ri jbroek(西班牙语语言和文学博士,教育学硕士及在读博士)

S3: Visual Coding in the Teaching of Chinese Grammar [RM B08] Duo Luan, University of Wales Trinity Saint David (E/C)

Summary: This presentation introduces a strategic model of visual coding (colour and shape) in Chinese grammar teaching. The learning approach starts from identifying the word classes coded with different corresponding colours. In line with this, the combination of using colours and shapes visually illustrates the form classes of Chinese sentences at the next syntactic stage. This visual input enhancement is embedded and delivered with deductive (learners are given the rule and asked to apply it) and inductive (learners recognise the rule and then practice it) grammar exercises. Trained through this coding approach, students are seen to acquire the knowledge of underlying abstract rules, which in turn allows them to understand and create novel utterances.

Duo LUAN (BA. MA. PhD and PGCert HE Candidate) is a lecturer and Chinese language coordinator in Chinese Studies, School of Cultural Studies, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. She has been teaching Chinese as a foreign language since 2003. Her current research lies in the pedagogy of TCFL and visual-coding in Chinese syntax learning.

S4: Basic Chinese Syntax: A Discussion of the Simple Sentence as Presented in Discover China [RM B02] Claudia Berger, University of Geneva (E)

Summary: Paradoxically, the main difficulty of the Chinese syntax, for speakers of Indo-European languages, is its simplicity. Discover China explicitly avoids the usual linguistical jargon of many teaching materials, and proposes an inductive way to grasp the grammar of Chinese, through the presentation of simple, everyday examples. We will procede on a similar inductive way to delineate the grammatical concepts of the Chinese language as presented in English in Discover China. Our purpose is to show how the simple sentence is structured, and what grammatical terminology, mostly interpreted from the Chinese linguistics, itself much influenced by Anglo-Saxon linguistical trends, is used. We will then contrast the English and the Chinese syntactical typologies of the simple sentence. The discussion will analyse points of agreement as well as some contradictions when comparing the two systems. To conclude, an easy, efficient structuralistic approach will be proposed.

Claudia Berger is a lecturer of Chinese at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Her main interests are applied linguistics, interculturality, information and communication technologies (ICTs), among other. She is currently working on a pedagogical grammar for French speaking learners.

S5: Blended Chinese Language Learning Design: An Integrative Review and Synthesis of the Literature [RM B07] Dr. Neil Hughes, University of Nottingham Dr. Lan Lo, University of Nottingham (E/C)

Summary: This paper addresses several questions in the area of Chinese blended language course design: 1. The strengths and weaknesses of the extant literature. 2. How insights from the wider blended and blended language learning literature advance the field? 3. How these literatures might be synthesised to produce a framework of parameters for effective blended Chinese language learning design? 4. What a course based on this new framework looks like in practice. The research parameters will be discussed in detail, along with their applicability, as demonstrated in examples from a beginners’ Chinese language module delivered at the University of Nottingham. Initial evidence from student assessment and teacher observations will be shared to suggest it is an effective vehicle for improving Chinese language proficiency and motivation.

Dr. Neil Hughes is Director of Modern Language Teaching in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies (CLAS) at the University of Nottingham. He has written articles on blended language learning and on other aspects of language learning and teaching in journals such as the Language Learning Journal and the Latin American Journal of Content and Languages Integrated Learning (LACLIL).

Dr. Lan LO is currently teaching Mandarin in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies (CLAS) at the University of Nottingham. She has co-authored a short book and journal papers on migrant workers in the UK as part of her PhD research, as well as articles on teaching Mandarin.

S8: The Challenges of Curriculum Development in MA TCSOL Programmes [RM B07] Dr. Xin Gao, University of Nottingham (C)

Summary: In this paper, some of the challenges in developing a university-based programme of Chinese teacher education have been explored. Over the past few years, the host of diversity in learners, programs, materials, policies and the societal context that Chinese teachers are likely to encounter in their careers has changed dramatically – all call for some more complex and ambitious goals as well as fundamental renovations to the curriculum of preparing teachers for the demands of work in the UK and overseas.

These challenges are examined from the view point that curriculum development has been influenced by quality of the “base” curriculum materials, the division between teacher learning and professional training, structuring of learning experiences, professional autonomy and accountability.

Dr. Xin GAO is the Course Leader of the MA TCSOL, School of Education, University of Nottingham. She has supervised PhD students researching teaching culture, trilingual education, L2 anxiety and some completed successfully. She has recently been an External Assessor and member of the Selection Committee for a newly-developed MA TCSOL programme in Ireland.

S9: Character Learning Strategies Among Danish and Swedish Beginners of Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) [RM B08] Chun Zhang, Aarhus University Denmark Yi-Ting Chen, Stockholm University, Sweden (C)

Summary: This study was conducted at three universities (i.e., Aarhus University, Copenhagen University, and Stockholm University) at two Nordic countries (i.e., Denmark and Sweden). 39 beginner Danish and Swedish of Chinese (L2) university students participated in the study. Drawing from the strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Oxford (1990), we adapted Shen’ (2005) questionnaire into two online surveys. The first survey was done in February 2016 aiming to discover some Chinese character learning strategies employed by Danish and Swedish learners. Based on the 1st survey, the second survey was developed and thereafter conducted in March 2016. A preliminary analysis revealed that the students used primarily three types of strategies (1) compensation strategies (i.e., application-assisted tools), (2) cognitive strategies (i.e., orthographic knowledge) and (3) memory strategies (i.e., repeated writing +rote learning). Finally, pedagogical implication of teaching character is discussed and future research is suggested.

Chun ZHANG, principal teaching associate professor, China Studies, Aarhus University, Denmark. She specialized in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and Chinese teacher education. She also initiated a project entitled ‘NordNet TCFL 2016’, a network aiming to improve the quality of TCFL practice within Nordic universities.

S10: To Write or Not to Write – Is it a Question? [RM B02] Dr. Song Lianyi, SOAS, University of London (C)

Summary: To write or not to write? It was never a question until some 15 years ago, however in recent years, with the rapid changes in digital technology it has become a very important question. In fact, today more and more Chinese courses in the West have opted for alternative forms of ‘writing’ instead of traditional handwriting. Typing is the most common practice to replace handwriting. Written assessments, such as the HSK exams levels 1-6, may be done without even physically writing a single character. The impact of technology on almost all aspects of life, including the learning and teaching of the Chinese language, seems unstoppable. This presentation aims to address this issue by looking at different approaches to teaching Chinese characters. While there are many pros and cons to be debated, it is hoped that a discussion of the various implications will help teachers of Chinese to consider the issue in a more open and flexible manner.

Dr. SONG Lianyi is principal teaching fellow in Chinese at SOAS, University of London, where he has taught for over 20 years. He was the chairman of the British Chinese Language Teaching Society (BCLTS) between 2003 and 2005.  His research covers Chinese language pedagogy, language assessment, and materials development.

S11: Beyond the Classroom – A ‘Can-do’ Approach to Developing Chinese Language Learners’ Autonomy [RM B07] Dr. Liang Wang, Queen’s University Belfast (C)

Summary: The European Benchmarking Chinese Language (EBCL) project (2010-2012) is an EU-funded project with the aim of investigating ways in which teaching and assessing Chinese language can be best integrated in the European context, under the guidance of CEFR. The EBCL project proposed an array of descriptors in the form of can-do statements with regard to the reception, production and interaction components of communicative activities from A1 to A2+ levels.

This presentation aims to outline a ‘can do’ approach to complementing and expanding existing formal classroom-based teaching and learning of Chinese language, and to discuss some key issues such as content development, activity design and self-assessment in order to facilitate such an implementation within a broader context of enhancing students’ autonomy through language skills and meeting diversified social demands. Examples from the Chinese language courses and resources provided by Queen’s University Belfast will be discussed.

Dr. Liang WANG is currently working for the Language Centre at Queen’s University Belfast. From June 2011 to December 2012, he worked as research assistant to the European Benchmarking Chinese Language project. He holds a PhD degree and an MRes degree in language education, and an MA in TESOL.

Opening Workshop: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving in the Chinese Classroom [RM A09] Shaz Lawrence, Founder of Creative Chinese (E)

Summary: Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential for not only linguistic competence but also global cultural awareness. It is evident from recent studies, that questioning and inquiry-based activities can stimulate students’ motivation, focus their attention, help students learn and think better, and also assist teachers to know how well a student is learning. The most successful classrooms are those that encourage students to think for themselves and engage in critical thinking. For our students to be problem-solvers, we have a crucial role in encouraging them to be independent learners. We nurture active and engaged students by using a student-driven curriculum.Examples of how teachers can light the ‘fire of curiosity’ and problem-solving will be explored with practical ideas, easily implemented into any Chinese language classroom.

Shaz Lawrence has over 20 years of experience teaching Chinese in Primary, and Secondary School grade levels. Shaz has a Bachelor of Education, an Advanced Degree in Language Acquisition, and has studied Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan and the mainland of China. W3: Approaches to Grammar [RM B07] Huang Dian, University of Westminster (C)

Summary: One of the cognitive processes is ‘embodiment’, such as the use of gestures. Embodied cognition helps us to see, to touch and to feel an abstract concept. Information stored in our long-term memory is in the form of images. Utilizing embodiment is one possible way to illustrate grammar rules and phrase structures – that is to use bodily experience to establish a link between the physical and the mental world.

The objective is to help students memorize and produce the correct language. This session will focus on the following:

1 How to explain grammar structures and vocabulary usage by relating them to people’s bodily experience.

2 How to help busy learners beginning Chinese language and enhance understanding, retention and the ability to use the language in the real world.

Examples will be sited from the grammatical syllabus of Discover China, published by Macmillan Education and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press..

HUANG Dian started teaching Chinese language at the University of Westminster, London, UK in 1988. She is the Coordinator of Chinese in the University-wide Taught Language Programme of the University of Westminster. She was a Committee Member and Chair of the British Chinese Language Teaching and Learning Society (BCLTS) from 2006 to 2009, and was an executive committee member of the Universities China Committee in London (UCCL) from 2009 to 2013.

1 如何将语法结构和词汇用法的解释与我们的身体感觉联系起来;

W5: Overcoming Post-beginners’ Anxiety: Challenges and Strategies [RM B07] Dr. Zhu Zhu, University of Edinburgh (C)

Summary: While still enjoying the excitement of learning an “exotic” language, post-beginners of Chinese generally experience growing anxiety as a result of greater demands mainly in three aspects: recognising and writing more Chinese characters, expanding vocabulary and internalising new grammar. Such anxiety has a direct impact on learners’ confidence and learning outcomes, and in many cases seems to be correlated with class retention rates.

This workshop is designed to work with Chinese language teachers who teach students at an age of 16 and above in various types of Chinese language classes. Through interactive discussions, it is aimed to increase participants’ understanding of difficulties shared by European learners at the post-beginner’s stage and to bring about effective teaching strategies to ease students’ anxiety and enhance learning outcomes.

Dr. ZHU Zhu is Chinese Language Programme Director at the University of Edinburgh, overseeing Chinese language provision across the University. She directs the curriculum development of Chinese language courses at both UG and PG levels as well as the design and revision of Chinese language courses for the general public. Zhu has extensive experience in training Chinese language teachers as well as in teaching language classes at ab initio to advanced levels. She is also an active researcher in the fields of Second Language Acquisition and Translation Studies.

Summary: We are all keen that students should enjoy our lessons and enjoy the process of learning. Classroom games have long been used to engage learners and to practise language in different ways. But very often classroom time is limited and teachers are planning their lessons to help their students achieve specific outcomes. When time is short, it is easy to see classroom games as a distraction from the main learning goals – an optional extra. So how can we make sure that the activities that we use achieve a balance: that they increase learners’ engagement and, at the same time, offer effective language practice?

In this session Helen will explore a range of classroom games that can be used in different learning environments and with students of different levels. The focus will be on activities that can be produced or re-purposed quickly, without adding to the workload of a busy teacher.

W6: 有效使用课堂游戏 [RM B08] 自由培训师 Helen Day (E)
