The need for exchanging ideas and breaking new ground unites
researchers from all over the world and in all disciplines. Since
2004, the European Research Center for Information Systems
(ERCIS) has been providing a platform for internationally renowned
experts from the research areas of Information Systems, Business
Studies, Applied Informatics, and IT Law for this purpose. The
network of professionally and culturally diverse researchers pro-
vides a forum for the continuous exchange of interesting ideas
and research cooperation opportunities. I am pleased to be a
part of this network and invite you to get to know the ERCIS, its
members, and activities on the following pages.

das Bedürfnis, sich auszutauschen und gemeinsam neue Pfade zu
beschreiten, vereint Forscher aus aller Welt und allen Disziplinen.
Das European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) bietet
dafür seit 2004 eine Plattform für international renommierte Experten
aus den Forschungsfeldern Wirtschaftsinformatik, Betriebswirt-
schaftslehre, Angewandte Informatik und IT-Recht. Die Vernetzung
von sowohl fachlich als auch kulturell unterschiedlich geprägten
Forscherinnen und Forschern sorgt für einen stetigen lebendigen
Austausch und eine Vielzahl interessanter Ideen und Forschungs-
kooperationen. Ich freue mich, Leiter und Teil dieses aktiven Netz-

The ongoing transformation of society and organizations due to the
growing impact of IT requires new ways of thinking and multidis-
ciplinary approaches for finding solutions to the problems arising
from these changes. The ERCIS has dedicated itself to dealing with
these challenges through the collaboration and exchange of infor-
mation between research and practice. Therefore, it is important
to have an interdisciplinary and global perspective.
The ERCIS is a lively research network that consists of established
research institutions in the area of Information Systems (IS).
Through the cooperation of internationally renowned experts from
the areas of Business Studies, Computer Science, IS, and IT Law,
the highest quality in applied research is ensured.
Projects carried out by the ERCIS cover the entire spectrum, from
fundamental research to application-oriented research. For this, the
advisory board provides valuable input. Furthermore, sustainability
is guaranteed by transferring the research results into teaching.

gabe gemacht, diesen Herausforderungen durch die Kollaboration
und den Informationsaustausch zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis
zu begegnen. Dabei ist vor allem eine interdisziplinäre und interna-
tionale Perspektive wichtig.
Das ERCIS ist ein lebendiges Forschungsnetzwerk von etablierten
Forschungsinstitutionen im Umfeld der Wirtschaftsinformatik. Inter-

The ERCIS network includes numerous researchers, all of who are
experts in a wide variety of research areas in Business Informatics
and related disciplines. In large research projects, expertise from
various domains is needed and a multidisciplinary approach is
necessary to cover all aspects of a project. This interaction of
highly diverse disciplines brings about the many productive
research programs of the network.

Forschungsprojekten ist die Expertise aus verschiedenen Domänen
gefragt, und ein multidisziplinärer Ansatz ist nötig, um alle Aspekte
eines Projektes abzudecken und bearbeiten zu können. Dieses
Zusammenspiel unterschiedlichster Disziplinen führt zu ergebnis-
reichen Forschungsprogrammen des Netzwerks.

More than 20 associated research institutions, as well as the
diverse companies from industry serving on the advisory board,
belong to the ERCIS network. The majority of the associated part-
ners come from Europe and are selected according to strict criteria.
As distinguished research institutions in the field of IS, each one
represents its respective country in the ERCIS network. The active
participation of each partner in network activities is a requirement
for ongoing membership, which is evaluated on a regular basis.
The network is headed by the board of directors in Münster,
which is composed of one academic director and eight additional
professors. The Academic Director, Prof. Jörg Becker, is responsible
for scientific coordination. The Managing Director, Dr. Armin Stein,
is responsible for the practical organization of the network.
The companies on the advisory board come from various sectors,
which guarantees the relevance of research for practice. Regular
meetings of the board of directors and the advisory board, as well
as annual workhops with the associated partners held at different
locations ensure continous, direct and productive exchange.
Besides the individual research activities of the members, ERCIS
combines and supports selected research aspects of Business
Informatics in competence centers. They serve to strengthen
research in specific areas.
Dem ERCIS gehören insgesamt mehr als 20 assoziierte Forschungs-
institute sowie diverse Beiratsunternehmen aus der Praxis an. Die
Leitung obliegt dem Direktorium in Münster, das sich aus einem
akademischen Direktor sowie acht weiteren Professoren zusammen-
setzt. Der akademische Direktor, Prof. Dr. Jörg Becker, ist für die
wissenschaftliche Koordination verantwortlich. Dr. Armin Stein als
geschäftsführender Direktor übernimmt die praktische Organisation
des Netzwerks.
Die assoziierten Partner stammen überwiegend aus Europa und
werden nach strengen Kriterien ausgewählt. Als renommierte For-
schungsinstitutionen auf dem Gebiet der Wirtschaftsinformatik ver-
treten sie ihr Land im ERCIS. Die Teilnahme an Netzwerkaktivitäten
ist Voraussetzung für eine fortlaufende Mitgliedschaft und wird
regelmäßig evaluiert.
Die Beiratsunternehmen aus diversen Branchen garantieren die Pra-
xisrelevanz der Forschung. Regelmäßige Direktoriums- und Beirats-
sitzungen sowie jährliche Workshops mit den assoziierten Partnern
an wechselnden Standorten sorgen für einen stetigen, direkten und
fruchtbaren Austausch.
Neben den individuellen Forschungsaktivitäten seiner Mitglieder
bündelt und fördert das ERCIS die Forschung zu ausgewählten
Aspekten der Wirtschaftsinformatik in Kompetenzzentren.
Diese dienen der expliziten Vertiefung der Forschung in bestimmten

What sets ERCIS apart is its excellent collaboration and the uncom-
plicated initiation of research projects. Its strengths are the personal
contact between researchers, which makes ERCIS a vibrant network,
as well as the wide range of different disciplines and national per-
spectives on IS research. The exchange of knowledge is ensured
by annual workshops and regular meetings during conferences
and conventions.
The search for research partners for the submission of proposals
for international joint research projects is facilitated through the
research and industry contacts of the individual members.
The international visibility of every single partner is increased by
its membership in the ERCIS.
In der Forschung zeichnet sich das ERCIS durch exzellente Koope-
rationen und eine unkomplizierte Anbahnung von Forschungspro-
jekten aus. Die Stärken sind der persönliche Kontakt zwischen den
Forschern, der das ERCIS zu einem lebendigen Netzwerk macht,
sowie das breite Spektrum an unterschiedlichen disziplinären und
nationalen Perspektiven auf die Wirtschaftsinformatik-Forschung.
Der inhaltliche Austausch wird durch jährliche Workshops und
weitere regelmäßige Treffen, z. B. auf Konferenzen und Kongressen,
sichergestellt.
Durch die Forschungs- und Praxiskontakte der einzelnen Mitglieder
wird die Partnersuche für die Antragsstellung von internationalen
Verbundforschungsprojekten vereinfacht. Für jeden einzelnen Part-
ner erhöht eine Mitgliedschaft im ERCIS seine internationale Sicht-
barkeit.

The relevance and practical application of the research carried
out by the ERCIS is supported through the active involvement of
the advisory board. The advisory board consists of businesses
from various industries and covers a wide range of applications.
Through regular meetings with the advisory board, the current
research need is identified and research projects formulized.
In order to maintain the relationship to practice during project
implementation, the advisory board members are involved in
research projects as application partners. Furthermore, the project
papers written by students at the advisory board companies and
the ongoing exchange with ERCIS researchers ensure that current
scientific findings are put into practice. In return, the advisory
board participates in guest lectures and workshops, providing
valuable input for research to students and ERCIS researchers.
This exchange also leads to contact with potential recruits.
By participating in research projects, advisory members can influ-
ence research topics at an early stage and thereby have a more
direct impact. This is especially helpful for developing new IT
products and services, as well as identifying potential markets.
Special access to research results, such as working papers, scien-
tific publications, or annual reports, ensures the continuous flow
of information.
Die Relevanz und Praxisnähe der Forschung im ERCIS wird unter
anderem durch die aktive Einbindung des Beirats gefördert. Der
Beirat besteht aus Unternehmen verschiedener Branchen und deckt
somit ein breites Anwendungsspektrum ab. Auf regelmäßigen
Beiratssitzungen wird mit den Vertretern aus der Praxis aktueller
Forschungsbedarf identifiziert und für Forschungsprojekte konkreti-
siert. Um den Praxisbezug auch während der Umsetzung zu wahren,
werden die Unternehmen als Anwendungspartner in Forschungs-
projekte eingebunden. Darüber hinaus gewährleisten studentische
Praxisarbeiten in Beiratsunternehmen und der stetige Austausch mit
Forschern des ERCIS den Transfer von aktuellen wissenschaftlichen
Erkenntnissen in die Praxis. Im Gegenzug liefern die Praxispartner
den Studierenden und Forschern am ERCIS im Rahmen von Work-
shops oder Gastvorträgen Impulse für die Forschung. Dieser Aus-
tausch sichert auch den Kontakt zu potenziellen Nachwuchskräften.
Durch die Einbindung in Forschungsprojekte haben Beiratsunter-
nehmen einen frühen und direkten Einfluss auf Forschungsthemen.
Dies ist besonders hilfreich bei der Entwicklung von neuen IT-
Produkten und Dienstleistungen sowie bei der Identifizierung von
potenziellen Märkten. Der Zugriff auf Forschungsergebnisse wie z. B.
Arbeitsberichte, wissenschaftliche Publikationen oder Jahresberichte
sichert außerdem einen kontinuierlichen Informationsfluss.

Young researchers also benefit from the research collaborations.
Many ERCIS members offer exchange programs that last one or
two semesters at a partner university so that students can acquire
international experience. Joint lectures organized by several ERCIS
members, as well as guest talks by ERCIS lecturers contribute to the
internationalization of teaching. The network has many industry
contacts, which makes it possible for interested students to write
their bachelor or master thesis at a company. Furthermore, the
ERCIS supports students who are starting their careers with access
to job offers from research and industry partners.
Die Forschungskooperationen kommen dem wissenschaftlichen
Nachwuchs zugute. So bieten viele ERCIS-Mitglieder Austauschpro-
gramme an, über die Studierende ein oder zwei Semester an einer
Partneruniversität internationale Erfahrungen sammeln können.
Gemeinsame Lehrangebote unterschiedlicher Mitglieder sowie Gast-
vorlesungen von ERCIS-Dozenten tragen zur Internationalisierung
der Lehre bei. Das Netzwerk verfügt über zahlreiche Praxiskontakte,
die es interessierten Studierenden ermöglichen, praxisorientierte
Bachelor- oder Masterarbeiten in einem Unternehmen zu schreiben.
Darüber hinaus unterstützt das ERCIS die Studierenden bei ihrem
Start ins Berufsleben durch den Zugriff auf Stellenausschreibungen
der Forschungs- und Praxispartner.
