Para los que buscan ver las cosas
desde otra altura, o sólo admirar
desde abajo. En el municipio de
Hidalgo N.L. puedes encontrar la pared
escalable más alta de América Latina:
Potrero Chico. 890 metros de altura y con
las condiciones y rutas ideales para subir y
bajar... si practicas ese deporte.
El cañón es muy visitado por escaladores
de EUA y Europa, y conocido mundialmente
por entusiastas en todo el mundo, que le
reconocen su dificultad intermedia a alta.
Algunos incluso han venido a vivir aquí
para seguir practicando. Si lo prefieres
puedes acampar y disfrutar de la naturaleza
mientras ves a otros esforzándose.
En esta temporada es recomendable
empezar temprano o en la tarde, así que
para mayor comodidad, hay ranchos y
quintas que ofrecen hospedaje, áreas para
acampar, cursos, guías. En el municipio
cercano encontrarás también hoteles y
restaurantes para completar la experiencia.
Todo a menos de una hora de Monterrey.

For those who want to see things from
a higher perspective, or maybe admire
from below, in the town of Hidalgo,
N.L. you can find the highest rock climbing
site in Latin America: Potrero Chico. As high
as 2000 feet, ideal conditions and well known
routes.
This canyon is visited by rock climbers from
USA and Europe, and widely known by
enthusiast around the world, who have rated
it with medium to high difficulty. Some of them
have even stayed to live and practice here.
If you prefer you can camp and enjoy nature
while you see others sweat.
In this season it’s best to start early or in the
evenings. For a comfortable experience,
there are ranchs that offer rooms, camping
areas, climbing courses, guides, etc.
You will never be too far from
town, with its hotels
ChicoPotrero
and restaurants. It is less than one hour drive
from Monterrey.

narios naturales que conservan
sus raíces como algo vivo y
perseverante. Un ejemplo está en un oasis
de la región, el Parque El Sabinal. Este
Parque Nacional está ubicado en Cerralvo,
la población más antigua en el estado;
en cierta época, su capital. Ahí puedes
encontrar árboles centenarios y enormes,
llamados sabinos (Taxodium mucronatum)
que ofrecen un panorama peculiar.
Abrázalos para la foto, y recuerda que fue
en un lugar como éste en el que empezó
lo regio. Te permite estar un rato entre la
familia, tal vez preparar una carne asada
o descansar escuchando los pájaros. A tu
alrededor hay albercas, mesas de picnic,
asadores, juegos infantiles, y caminos.
Cerralvo tiene sus Festividades del 21 a 30
de abril, una feria tradicional con grupos
musicales, puestos de comida, juegos.
Aprovecha para acercarte a la cultura de
nuestros pueblos. Prueba el dulce de frijol,
o las empanadas de piña. Además la región
es atractiva para la caza y pesca, pues
cuenta con ranchos apropiados y la presa
Nogalitos, siempre y cuando la temporada
lo permita.

Nuevo León is a state with natural
scenery that keeps its roots strong
and alive. One example is the El
Sabinal Park, a regional oasis. This National
Park is located in Cerralvo, the oldest town
in the state; it was our capital in past times.
There you will find tall and centenarian trees,
called sabinos (Taxodium mucronatum), that
create a peculiar atmosphere. Hug them for
a picture, and remember that in a place like
this the regio story began. You can spend
an afternoon with the family, maybe having
a barbecue o resting while you hear the
sounds of local birds. Around you are pools,
picnic tables, outdoor grills, playgrounds and
pathways.
El Sabinal
Cerralvo has its festivities from April 21st to
30th, a traditional annual fair with regional
music, food stands and the usual games. So
this is an opportunity for you to get closer to
local culture. Try the bean candy or the tasty
pineapple empanadas. In addition to that, the
region is attractive for hunting and fishing,
and has designated areas like the ranchos for
deer hunting, or the Nogalitos Dam, when the
season allows it.

Después de una semanita ardua y
provechosa de trabajo -como es
parte del carácter regiomontano-, por
lo general gustamos de tener una reunión,
iniciando el sábado por la tarde, antes de que
el sol le dé lugar a la luna.
Unas llamadas a amigos y/o familiares,
preparamos el asador, se consigue una buena
leña o carbón y con técnica de boy scout se
enciende el fuego. En el momento en que
las brasas estén listas, se empieza a echar la
carne previamente sazonada al gusto familiar.
Aquí es importante hacer notar que toda esta
actividad es en familia, de hecho la tradición
permanece por generaciones; hasta se llega
a decir que un regio que no sabe asar carne,
no es regio.
Mientras que se prepara la carne, agregando
además cebollas y papas envueltas en
aluminio sobre las brasas, la convivencia
es primordial. Se platica de las experiencias
de la semana, planes, bromas, fútbol y tal
vez política. La música y cervezas pueden
contribuir a la experiencia.
Las reuniones con carne asada suelen ser
largas, disfrutándose como un momento de
distracción y esparcimiento para muchas
familias y grupos de amigos. Es por esto que
en cada casa de nuestra ciudad podremos
encontrar aunque sea un pequeño asador.

After the hard, rewarding work – filled
week which is part of regional character,
we usually enjoy reunions starting on
Saturday afternoons, before the sun changes
places with the moon.
After a few phone calls to friends and/or
family, we prepare the outdoor grill, and with
good charcoal and boy scout technique we
start the fire. When the coals are red hot, we
start barbecuing the traditional carne asada,
or grilled meat, seasoned for the family taste.
Here we have to say that this activity is mainly
familiar, in fact la tradición persists across
generations; it is even said that a regio that
doesn’t know how to barbecue carne asada...
is not a regio.
As the meat is cooked, and we place potatoes
and onions wrapped up on tinfoil over the hot
coals, the reunion with friends is the main
event. We talk about our experiences, plans,
jokes, soccer and maybe the latest political
events. Music and beer can also add to the
experience.
Reunions with carne asada are usually long,
and enjoyed as a fun and amusing moment
for many families and groups of friends. That
is why in almost every regio house you can
find at least a small asador (outdoor grill).

Tenemos claro que el frijol es un
alimento básico, y a muchas familias
las acompaña diariamente. No es
para menos, es práctico, ya que puede
ser preparado de distintas maneras. Sin
embargo, encontrarnos con él como postre,
tal vez para muchos de nosotros no sea
muy común… lamentablemente. Pues sí, el
frijol también es dulce.
En varios municipios de nuestro estado
podemos disfrutar del Dulce de Frijol, pero
es en Cerralvo (ver Spot) en donde se
atribuyen la receta de la región. El dulce
es preparado con canela, jugo de naranja,
azúcar y desde luego el frijol. Su preparación
es simple, es como hacer una sopa. Al final
quedará algo así como una mermelada,
aunque un poco más espesa, con sabor
realmente agradable, nada empalagoso ni
aburrido ya que el frijol queda balanceado
con lo fuerte de la canela y lo ácido del jugo,
formando así una excelente combinación.
Suelen venderlo en un vasito de hielo seco
acompañado de una cucharita, dándose a
notar la elaboración casera y tradicional.
Así que para experimentar nuevas texturas y
sabores este dulce es una deliciosa opción
en Nuevo León. Adelante, atrévete.

dulce de frijol¿ ?
We have as a fact that beans are a
basic element for nutrition and a daily
companion for many families.
It’s a practic food source, as it can be prepared
in different ways. Nevertheless, as a dessert
it is sadly not very common. But that happens,
because beans can also be… candy.
We can taste Bean Candy in many towns of our
state, Nuevo León, but it is in Cerralvo (see:
S p o t ) where they are said to own the recipe.
The candy is made with cinnamon,
orange juice, sugar and... beans,
of course. Its preparation is simple,
like making soup. At the end you will
have something like marmalade, but
thicker, with a really pleasant taste,
never oversweet or boring, as
the bean flavor is balanced with
the strong cinnamon and the
acid juice, forming an excellent
“combeanation”.
Its usual presentation is on
a styrofoam cup along with
a small plastic spoon, projecting
its traditional, homemade qualities.
So, it is a delicious option for new
textures and flavors, like others you
can find in Nuevo León. Go ahead, be
daring.
Es difícil iniciar una reseña sobre un
gran concierto, muchas imágenes
geniales inundan la mente y tal vez
sólo se pueda decir: “es de los mejores que
he visto, sino es que el mejor”.
Desde luego se tienen unos extensos
antecedentes sobre los Rolling Stones,
acerca de su importancia en la historia de
la música y una producción vasta que los
hace invaluables. Pero el presenciarlos en
vivo va más allá. Se plantan en el escenario
dominándolo como una banda que tuviera
apenas un hit en los charts, con esa emoción
y energía.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood y
Charlie Watts siguen conservando, para
muchos de forma sorprendente, la vitalidad
y empuje de un niño de 10 años, y tal vez
más, porque todavía les sobra para su
público.
Hablar que fue un show impactante y
ostentoso en producción podría estar de
más, eso fue un moño pequeño para un
regalo inmenso. La consistencia fueron los
guitarrazos, gritos, redobles, solos, saltos y
bailes de un grupo que mantiene despierto
al rock and roll, recordándonos el cómo y
por qué fue creado.
Podemos imaginar que esto es lo que pasa
cuando hacemos algo tan grandioso que
sobrepasa toda edad, esa es la fuente de
la juventud… el rock es un buen camino.
Monterrey rejuveneció, Monterrey conoció
nuevos alientos para prenderse y estar más
vivos. Gracias a los Rolling Stones. Perdón,
esto fue el 1 de marzo del 2006 en el Estadio
de la UANL, si lo preguntaban.

It’s hard to review a great concert. So many
cool images fill your head, leaving only the
phrase: “it’s one of the best shows that I’ve
seen… if not THE best”.
Of course, you arrive with a wide background
of trivia about the Stones, their importance in
music history and the long career that makes
them priceless. But watching them play live
goes beyond pure anecdote. They stand on
stage as conquerors, like a new band with
only a hit, but full of emotion and energy.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood and
Charlie Watts are amazing, they still have
the vitality of a 10 years old boy, and maybe
more: they have a lot to give.
Talking about an impressive show, with flashy
production is just the icing on a incredible
cake. The main event was in the guitar strums,
shouts, drum rolls, solos, jumps and dances
of a band keeping rock awake, reminding us
about the how and why of its creation.
We can imagine that this is what happens
when we do such great things; they go
beyond all age, that is the fountain of youth…
and rock music is a good way to reach it.
Monterrey is now younger, and connected
to new airs. The city feels vibrant and alive.
Thanks to the Stones.
Ah, and this all really happened on March 1st,
2006 at el Estadio Universitario, in case you
were wondering.

Nuestra ciudad ocupa un lugar peculiar como una de las ciudades más importantes
en México. Nos movemos al ritmo de la rica tradición norteña, del conocido pop
adolescente, y de viejas y nuevas luminarias del rock. Muchas músicas están al
alcance de nuestros oídos. Pero por un tiempo, no fue posible disfrutar la presencia de
grupos internacionales en la ciudad con la frecuencia deseada. Sólo teníamos noticias de
tours que pasaban por México, D.F. sin tocar nuestras tierras.

Eso ha cambiado en los últimos años. Eventos como el concierto de Los Tenores ponen
a la ciudad bajo los reflectores, y dan confianza a los empresarios de espectáculos. Las
bandas siempre esperadas han estado por fin frente a los regios y se han contagiado de
su energía. No somos espectadores cansados: muchas cosas son nuevas todavía. De
esa forma, hemos recibido a bandas clásicas de rock setentero como The Eagles, Kiss; a
luminarias ochenteras, como The Cure; a un exponente de la electrónica pop como Moby,
que nos puso a bailar a todos; a representantes del grunge, como Pearl Jam y Mudhoney;

herederos glam como Placebo; los White Stripes dejaron de ser sólo una referencia de
moda en revistas, para ofrecernos una noche divertida; el dancepunk de Radio 4 y The Faint
apareció en el Barrio Antiguo; piedras angulares del progresivo setentero y actual como Yes
y Dream Theatre han hecho su aparición ante entusiastas fans; los seguidores del metal han
podido disfrutar sus estrellas. Pero quizás el punto más destacado ha sido la visita de U2 y

Our city has a peculiar place as one of
the most important cities in México.
We move with the rhythm of the rich
norteño tradition, of well known teen pop, and
rock stars new and old. Many kinds of music
are within our ear’s reach. But for a time we
couldn’t enjoy the presence of international
performers in our city with the frequency we
would have liked. We only had news of tours
reaching México City, without stopping here
to say hello.
That has changed in the later years. Events
like The Tenors concert have placed our city
under the spotlights, giving confidence to
showbusiness enterprises. At last, the bands
we always wanted have appeared in front of
the regio public, sharing its energy. We are not
jaded spectators: many things are still new.
That way, we have seen classic seventies
bands like The Eagles and Kiss; Eighties
favorites The Cure; Moby made us dance with
his pop electronica; grunge representatives
like Pearl Jam and Mudhoney; glam followers
Placebo; the White Stripes were no longer
just a trendy reference, becoming a fun
– filled party; Radio 4 and The Faint appeared
with their dancepunk in el Barrio Antiguo;
cornerstones of prog rock like Yes and Dream
Theatre met their enthusiastic fans; metal
followers have enjoyed varied festivals with
the biggest names in the field. But maybe the
highest point has been the visit of U2 and The
Rolling Stones to our city, joining generations
in a same applause. We have something for
everyone, and we are still hungry for more.
