Those that have resigned, are Eddie Kobuoe, secretary, and two additional members, Ntombi Ntsonta and Mokati Moledi. The trio resigned earlier this month as differences over the running of the affairs of the station reached boiling point. News about the trio’s resignation was kept under wraps amidst the station’s management ensuring the public that all was well in the station’s corridors. The resignations have further fuelled speculation that the station was plagued by factionalism and severe financial and managerial problems, allegedly arising from a poor management style. The station management is currently headed by Sechaba Motopi, Azio Thathe, Ezekial Buti, Kenny Moholobela and Brian Selekoe who holds a dual role as chairperson of the board. Kobuoe and Ntsonta cited the alleged management style which was based on friendship rather than principles as one of the reasons to tender their resignation from the trouble-ridden community station. Express Goldfields & NFS reliably learnt that the appointment of Moholobela to the influential position of station manager was a bone of contention among several serious issues crippling the station. The position of station manager was advertised late in August with the following requirements: matric certificate, diploma in Finance Administration or equivalent with relevant knowledge of corporate governance, financial management, human resource management, and regulations guided by the Public Finance Management Act, and Generally Accepted Accounting Practice, as well as managerial experience. It has come to light that Moholobela, who had been the acting station manager and was apparently endorsed to the position of station manager, does not even have a matric certificate. The advertisement stated that candidates would be appointed on a fixed 12-month contract with remuneration of R4 500 monthly. It is unclear if Moholobela has been offered the same. Repeated efforts by Express Goldfields & NFS to get comment from Selekoe, chairper- son of the board and member of manage- ment, were futile. The station is reported to owe the state-owned broadcasting signal distributor Sentech over R15 000, and that the management had been struggling to feed the bill. THE era of entrepreneurs in the Goldfieldsmarginalised from playing a role in theeconomy of the region seems to be a thingof the past. This followed the formation of abody known as the United Small, Mediumand Micro Enterprise Forum which, as theumbrella body of existing and emergingentrepreneurs, will serve as the voice forall affiliated SMME’s.

Led by a team of nine persons the bodywas launched at an event held in the TS duPlessis Theatre in Welkom last Thursday.The committee members are Buti Mokeretla(chairperson), Mthunzi Tshabalala (deputychairperson), Lele Thibatsana (secretary),Joyce Mkefa (assistant secretary), JeanetteSebotsa (assistant treasurer) Isaac Tau(treasurer), Sechaba Matsau (coordinator),

Humphrey Dakuse and Majoro Mosebi(additional members).

Mokeretla says the lack of support forentrepreneurs by both the public andprivate sector, including mine companies,prompted the establishment of the body,and that they hope to break the shacklesthat saw entrepreneurs not contributingtowards the economic growth of theGoldfields and job creation. Mokeretla hasblamed disunity among SMME’s in theregion as yet another factor that contribut-ed to them being marginalised over theyears.

“This saw entrepreneurs from outside theGoldfields taking full advantage,” saysMokeretla. The forum will advocate thatSMME’s in the Goldfields be given a fairshare of economic opportunities so as toempower themselves and create employ-

ment opportunities.Mokeretla believes a united body will go

a long way ensuring their recognition asactive role-players in growing the economyof the Goldfields.

The forum aims to among others mobilisesupport for both established and emergingSMME’s, market services they offer to boththe private and public sector and strength-en entrepreneurs through empowermentprogrammes to better meet the require-ments.

Mokeretla says they plan to work hand-in-hand with the various stakeholders thatinclude mine companies and municipalities.

“Failure is no longer an option, we haveto organise SMME business visionary, bothnew and existing. This can only be recog-nised when we are in collaboration withthe government. However, we cannot

achieve economic growth without imple-menting broad-base economy policies asproposed by our government.

“The key to economic development, whichleads to poverty reduction, also lies in thedevelopment of SMME’s that are competi-tive, resilient and can continue to groweven when the market conditions aredifficult,” says Mokeretla.

Lennox Rubulana, head of the MatjhabengLocal Municipality’s Local EconomicDevelopment, has encouraged SMME’s to bemore flexible, innovative and responsive tomarket demands, further urging owners tobring a fresh business model.

“Gold is no more and it is time weembark on our secondary economy which isagriculture. We are also modifying thetenders statistic with 70% disseminatedlocally and 30% to foreigners,” he says.

THE estimated cost of repair and renova-tion of the half-burnt administrationblock of the Letsete Secondary School inThabong, Welkom, will be betweenR70 000 and R80 000.

The school’s administration block isnot being utilised after it was damagedwhen unknown vandals threw petrolbombs through the windows on the nightof 4 October.

Howard Ndaba, spokesperson of theprovincial Department of Education, saidthe incident did not cause major disrup-tions for the school management andlearners’ preparation f or examinationswhich start this Friday.

“However, some teachers’ portfolioswere burnt, but fortunately the teachersmanaged to retrieve the marks from thelearners to compile their marks list,” hesaid.

He said further assessments of the extentof the damage to the building would bedone.

The cost will be for the ceiling, paint-ing, replacement of broken windows andinstallation of new air-conditioning,tables and stationery cabinets amongothers.

Teachers are utilising one of the class-rooms in the interim.

Ndaba said the community was dutybound to also help the department withsafety and security measures in generalat schools.

“It is important to indicate that theschool is the property of the community,as such we call on the communityadjacent to the school to protect theschool against vandalism and any form

of criminality,” he said.Ndaba encouraged the community to

work together with the police in theAdopt a Cop Programme where schoolsare allocated a police officer to deal withthe criminal activities.

He said the programme’s randomsearch of learners to seize dangerous itemswould be effective.

“This is to ensure learners do notbring any illegal items to the schoolpremises,” said Ndaba.

WO Khosana Malebo, spokesperson ofthe Thabong Police Station, said twobottles containing flammable liquid hadbeen discovered during the investigationof the incident, adding that they wereinvestigating a case of arson.

The police have not yet made anyarrest.

THE Welkom police are on the hunt forthe two armed robbery suspects shown inthe identikits for allegedly robbing a25-year-old man on 28 August.

Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, spokesper-son for the Welkom police, said thesuspects, armed with a pistol, robbed theman shortly after he had withdrawn R2 660near a shopping complex in Welkom inBuiten Street.

She said after they had robbed thevictim, the suspects fled on foot.

The first suspect is about 1,65 m tall, ofmedium built, light in complexion, be-tween the ages of 35 and 40 and his righteye had a black mark and was swollen atthe time of the incident.

The second suspect is about 1,9 m tall,of medium built, light in complexion,between the ages of 40 and 45, has a 10 cmscar on the left side of his face, his lefteye appears to be blind, and both weretalking Sesotho.

Any person who can assist in thesuccessful arrest of the suspects and theirprosecution can contact the investigativeofficer, WO Riaan de Lange, on 057-391-6271 during office hours.

SIX would-be armed robbers remainbehind bars after being denied bail onappearance in the Welkom Magistrate’sCourt last Monday.

The state turned down the bail applica-tions because the men were allegedlylinked to other violent crimes committedin Gauteng and Welkom.

The suspects are Jackie Janson (42),Farouk Meyer (39), Gerdine Meyer (26),Romano Simons (26), Imran Bhaudia (43)and Pieter van der Berg (44).

They were arrested earlier this monthat about 18:00 after a foiled armed robberyat a shopping complex in Welkom.

Five of the suspects were caught red-handed at the complex by a joint task forceteam, comprising members of the police ofthe Welkom Tactical Response Team,Thabong Cluster Task Team and CrimePrevention.

The sixth suspect was arrested laterfollowing intensive investigation.

The men face charges of attemptedmurder and robbery.

Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, spokespersonof the Welkom police, said the suspectswere allegedly linked to armed robberies inKomatipoort and Fairland in Gauteng andthe assault of a police officer in Bronville,Welkom.

She said five suspected robbers had beenoverpowered at the shopping complex inWelkom’s central business district after anexchange of fire with members of thepolice’s joint task force.

She said in the process they had triedto flee the scene in a getaway vehiclewhich was cornered before it could goanywhere.

Mofokeng said another getaway carwhich one of the suspected robbers had

fled in had later been found abandoned atManny’s Shopping in Welkom.

She said upon the arrest police membershad found two firearms, a Taurus 9 mmpistol with four live rounds and a 7.65pistol with eight rounds.

Mofokeng said several cartridges hadbeen found at the scene.

She also added that no one had beeninjured during the shoot-out between thepolice and the five suspected armedrobbers.

Bail denied: Suspectslinked to other crimes

THE Welkom police have uncovered aget-rich-quick scheme operating from a housein Welkom, which apparently stores variousgoods to supply to illegal miners in theGoldfields.

On-duty police members discovered thescheme following prompt response to a tip-offfrom residents. Estimated to be worththousands of rands, the goods were seized onFriday, 17 October, after police searched ahouse in Naudéville, Welkom.

Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson ofthe Welkom police, said the police membersfound all the rooms of the house stocked tocapacity with large quantities of goods whichinclude food, distilled liquor and non-alcohol-ic beverages.

It is suspected that the house was asyndicates’ gateway store to supply peoplewho are illegally mining gold at dysfunction-al mines in the Goldfields region.

Thakeng said goods were discovered whenthe house was searched, culminating in thearrest of a 39-year-old man.

Thakeng said the suspect would be chargedwith conspiracy to commit theft and dealingin gold.

According to him the goods found in thehouse were: 319 bags of instant porridge;large quantities of 500 ml Coca-Cola drinks;171 loose packets of instant porridge; a largequantity of buckets; 17 big boxes of Cremoracream packets; boxes of 50 ml brandy bottlesincluding Klipdrift, Klipdrift Export andRichelieu; Amarula; nine rolls of plastic foodwrap; three boxes of tape and telephone line.

“These items are sold underground atinflated prices, thus these syndicates aremaking lots of money,” Thakeng said.) In a separate incident quick reaction to atip-off saw the police seizing more than 60boxes of raw tobacco with an estimated valueof R4 million stacked in a truck with twomale occupants.

The truck was stopped on the R73 roadnear the Bambanani Mine in Welkom. Thepolice received a tip-off about a truck fromthe Eastern Cape transporting large quanti-ties of raw tobacco to an unknown destina-tion in Gauteng.

CHRISTIANS have a clever way ofselectively using some biblical expressionsonly when it is convenient to them.Classic case – judge not, lest you be judged,Luke 6: 37. I have in the past been con-fronted by religious people using the aboveexpression.

Whenever I pointed out their ungodlybehavioural patterns they appear intoler-ant of other Christians’ approach towardsthe same faith they follow.

The collapse of the Nigerian church’sguest house and the subsequent death ofover a hundred Christians who visited theTemitope Balogun, Joshua’s synagogue,have prompted a lot of criticism – 80 ofthe victims were South Africans.

Joshua is one of the most generouspastors in Africa. He has offered over R20million towards health, education andrehabilitation programmes.

Kefuoe Molelekoa (35), a successfulbusinessman from Stilfontein, North West,who often flies to Nigeria, has confessedthat he goes there not to worship Joshua,but God who has blessed Joshua so that hecould be a blessing to others. He hastestified that Joshua boosts followersspiritually, materially, psychologically andphysically.

Religious intolerance is the major sourceof violence in the world. To reduce it, mysuggestion is that the scholars havemeetings to discuss the similarities anddifferences of religions.

These meetings can be followed bygatherings between leaders from differentreligions.

This exchange between spiritual expe-riences I think will help in understandingthe value of other religions.

Invitations can be made across thereligious divides.

During conferences, you will find thesame delegates from different regionsevery year; regionally, provincially andnationally. Why not break the monotonyand invite guests from other denomina-tions?

The major cause of intolerance is thetendency of self-importance among someChristians. We need to accept otherpeople’s faiths.

To try and convert them is counterpro-ductive and creates problems. For in-stance, there are a lot of Hindus andMuslims in our midst, but we do not knowwhat their faiths are all about.

What happened at the Nigerian syna-gogue disaster is what can happen any-where where people are gathered. On 11April 2001, 43 people who left their homesto watch a football match between OrlandoPirates and Kaizer Chiefs lost their livesin a stampede at the Ellis Park Stadium inGauteng.) Qwenga jailed for revenge stabbingMurder-accused Owethu Qwenga (32) will

spend 13 years in jail for the murder ofZanokhaya Skifi in March 2010. TheVirginia Regional Court convicted theaccused recently after finding him guiltyregarding the fatal stabbing of Skifi, whosebody was found between the Moeletsi andG Hostel blocks in Thabong, Welkom.

Commonly known as Mancane, theaccused stabbed the victim (then 21) inrevenge over an argument which occurredelsewhere.

Upon fatal stabbing the victim with aknife the accused handed himself over tothe police officers who were called to thescene. The deceased sustained stab wounds

on his left cheek near his mouth and onthe left side of his neck.

Two burglars jailed for 12 yearsTwo burglars, Sello Simon Mohohlo (34)

and Thabo Phillemon Moshobela (35), willspend 12 years in prison following theirsentencing by Magistrate Bongani Ludidiafter finding them guilty for burglary at abusiness in 2012.

They were convicted and sentencedrecently in the Welkom Magistrate’sCourt.

The burglars were caught red-handedinside the Welkom Meat Centre afterthe alarm went off and following theprompt response by the security compa-ny.

They accessed the business through theroof on 14 March 2012 at about 01:39.

State prosecutor Tseko Komane presidedover the proceedings.

THE Hoopstad Correctional Centre’sSocial Reintegration Office is continu-ing with a campaign to encourage thecommunity to keep the environmentclean.

In line with this programme, thecentre’s officials organised a one-daycleaning campaign which saw residentsteam up with a group of probationersvolunteering to beautify the town bycleaning dirty areas.

Dirkie Kotze, the head of the Hoop-stad Correctional Centre’s SocialReintegration Office, said the initiativewas also in support of the TswelopeleLocal Municipality’s environmentalcampaign.

“Our aim with this project is todevelop community awareness about

the benefits of a clean environmentand living in a clean town. It isvery important to keep our townclean – it is our responsibility,” saidKotze.

“Most of all, our office appreciatesthe opportunity to be of assistancetowards the community and otherdepartments.

“We try to help where we can asmembers of the Department ofCorrectional Services. We want to be agood example to the community at alltimes.

“Our work is our pride.”He said through the on-going cleaning

campaign they strove to encourageresidents and business to take pride intheir town.

THE players of Bloemfontein Young Tigershave been rewarded for their performance inthe 2013-’14 season, most notably for reachingthe Nedbank Cup’s last-32 leg.The club’s management rewarded deser-

ving players at a function held at theBoikhuco Old Age Home’s hall on 17 October.The Tigers are campaigning in the secondtier league of the South African FootballAssociation (Safa) in the Free State stream.The players were rewarded financially by

British Khoarai, the club’s managingdirector, who expressed delight with theteam’s improved performance.All the players who were rewarded were

part of the squad that came close to makinghistory in the lucrative tournament, whichoffers the winner the chance to competecontinentally in the Confederation of AfricanFootball (Caf) Champions League CupTournament.The team was the only lower ranked team

of the 17 clubs in the Free State to reach theNedbank Cup’s last-32 leg. However, theygave away the chance to progress to the nextstage of 16 when they lost 4-5 on penalties toNational First Division outfit Milano United.Tigers stood their ground well against

Milano as they forced the game to go beyondextra time. The competition match playedearlier in March had ended one all.The club embraced the newly-enlisted
