Message from the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries "Endeavour in the sea, love the sea and develop the sea" with your heart."Endeavour in the sea, love the sea and develop the sea" with your heart.

The major activities of the Faculty of Fisheries, Kagoshima University, are offering high quality education and conducting innovative researches on science and technology, concerning the nature of human activities in the aqua-sphere. There is an increasing importance of this field in response to the social needs for food security, food safety and environmental conservation. Our faculty is unique in Japan as an institute in the field of fisheries. The faculty has a Department of Fisheries, which consists of five fields: Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries Resource Sciences, Food and Life Sciences, Fisheries Economics and Aquatic Environment Sciences. The Graduate School of Fisheries has a Master course that follows a similar system to that of the Faculty of Fisheries. The faculty has developed its capability in manpower production as well as basic and applied studies in a wide range of aquatic environments, resources and industrial utilization of fisheries resources and their consumption as well.

The objectives for education and researches of the faculty are to develop a rational utilization of fishery resources, to conserve the aquatic environments and ecosystems, to contribute to society and to engage in local fisheries. The principle of the faculty has been field-oriented education and researches. In order to achieve this, the faculty has facilitated the construction of well-balanced facilities, such as two training vessels, Kagoshima-maru and Nansei-maru, together with the Education and Research Center for Marine Resources and Environment. Training vessel Kagoshima-maru was built in 2012, and is one of the latest training vessels in the world, and is now devoted to our education and researches. She is accredited as an educational core of on-board training in tropical and sub-tropical waters, and accepts students from other regional universities. To guarantee the establishment of high quality education, we have developed the unique education management system based on the ISO 9001 accreditation.

While Kagoshima University’s Faculty of Fisheries has endeavored to link with Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, the faculty has conducted, in particular, a variety of international collaborations with several foreign universities, colleges and institutions. Our faculty leads continued enhancements of international credibility for higher education in Japan. In addition to conventional academic activities, the faculty has offered international technical dissemination and transfer, and the faculty members participate in ODA (Official Development Assistance) projects. At the same time, faculty members and students are deeply involved in local community service programs based on the needs from local fisheries sectors with particular emphasis to those in remote islands.

The faculty wishes to sustain the status of a world-renowned fisheries education and research institution encompassing over the tropical and sub-tropical aquatic belt around the globe.

This program is specifically prepared to enable foreign students fulfill all the requirements to complete the master course of this School through studies conducted only in English. There are special arrangements including offering some subjects available only to foreign students for efficient and comfortable study. It is strongly noted; however, that the Curriculum and Registration Rules of the School shall be applied to basic matters relevant to enrolment, registration, credit points, researches, graduation requirements etc. in the School. It must be also noted that foreign students who do not register for this Programme shall study mainly in Japanese in accordance to the standard curriculum of the School.

Because of conservation of biodiversity and steady supply of seafood as our food, the strict conservation and management in the aquatic environment in fresh and sea water areas have been required in the world. We especially train students with the holistic knowledge for red tides, eutrophication, environmental pollution by chemicals (negative impacts), environmental conservation, and environmental remediation and aim to raise them as researchers and experts, who will be active all over the world.

Educational and Research Center for Marine Resources and Environment, Kinko Bay On-shore LaboratoryKinko Bay On-shore Laboratory is located near our faculty. In the laboratory, we conduct comprehensive rearing experiments of marine finfish and shellfish, which aim to study aquatic animal nutrition, aquaculture feed development and seedling production techniques. The main components of our facilities include a filtered seawater supply system, rearing tanks and a mid-scale recirculating tank system.

Training VesselsKagoshima-Maru (1,284t)We are conducting medium to long term cruises lasting from 7 days to 50 days as practical training in the coastal areas extending from the Japanese coast to its near waters and the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Undergraduate students experience navigation, seamanship, longline fishing, trawling and oceanographic observations during their on-board training.Nansei-Maru (175t)We perform on-board training and oceanographic surveys in Kagoshima Bay and the East-China Sea as its main activity area. We research about trawling, longline fishing, single-hook fishing, water temperature, water quality, current, sediment, marine observation, fishing gear performance, voyage instruments, ship motion, marine resources, etc.

Educational and Research Center for Marine Resources and Environment, Azuma-cho Field StationAzuma-cho Field Station is located in Nagashima Island, close to the Yatsushiro Sea, and serves as a seaside satellite facility for the researchers from our university and other institutions. The station was first established in 1972 and reconstructed in 2016. Facilities include large-scale water tanks (600t × 2, 30t × 3, 8t × 2, 4t × 4), several small research boats like Azuma (8.5t) and a dormitory for up to 30 persons.
