We have been AI-ing our small herd of purebred commercial Angus
since 1995. John’s Dad, Carl Fahlgren, purchased the original cows
(without the registration papers) from Knudsen Angus at Bainville
and Itchiana Ranch, Malta.
From the beginning, our emphasis has been on the cow, to have
cattle with good udders, good dispositions, good capac-ity, good
milk. Other selection criteria for AI sires we have focused on are
calving ease, weaning and yearling weight, and scrotal
circumference. The first two sires we used, Emulation 5522 and EXT
made such an improvement in the maternal characteristics of our
cows that we used them as long as they were available. All our cows
have one or both of these sires in their bloodline. We have used a
number of other great sires, but found that In Focus gave the
greatest improvement to our cows; so we have been using In Focus
for several years and for 2012 are using a son; Special Focus, on
all our non- In Focus cows. In Focus, Lead On and Final Answer have
all given our cows improved dispositions. Having cattle that are
easy to handle and nice to be around is really enjoyable. We are
pleased with the progress our cattle have made and know that these
bulls will perform for you, giving you calving ease and growth and
heifers you will want to keep.
The health program was a 4-way and 7-way shot at branding, Vista
one-shot at preconditioning with booster at weaning, Ivomec at
weaning and April 16, and Fusogard for footrot protection April 1
and booster April 16.
