    What is Sufism (Tasawwuf)?

$ufism (tasawwuf) is the branch of Islamic knowledge which focuses on the spiritual

de+elopment of the 8uslim. It is the traditional Islamic science of selfimpro+ement, selfpurification and spirituality ($ufismBmysticism), focusing fully on ones relationshipwith Allah ;aak 9allashanahu.

$ufism is a spiritual ourney and entails one to be always e+er mindful of worship and toconcentrate sharply on Allah ($#T). 4ne must ignore the temptation and lust of thismundane world and must li+e by the laws set out by our Almighty Allah ($#T). In orderto achie+e this, one must kill his ego and selfishness. These were the ways of theCompanions of the @oly ;rophet ($ahabah Ikraam) and the righteous scholars of the past($alf$aliheen).

    Imam >hazali (:ahmatullahalaiyhi) offers a comprehensi+e definition of $ufismD

The highway to this destination is that first of all, make a firm

commitment (to promise to Allah Taala, repent and take oath, destroy all

inner mundane desires (lea!e the habits of nafs-e-amara, break off any

sentimental attachment with anything whatsoe!er (stop running after

=Gtreme lo+e (IshF) is a +ery demanding state and matter and entails eGtreme hardshipsand sacrifices with regards to ones life and soul. Thus if one seeks to follow this path, one must think +ery carefully and be mentally prepared.

'or instance, @adhrat Ibrahim (Alayhisalaam) was an eGtreme *o+er of Allah ($#T).

$o @e (Alayhisalaam) was tested +igorously. @e achie+ed success in e+ery test. @e wasthrown in fire, had to lea+e his wife, kids and country, was gi+en the command tosacrifice his belo+ed son with his +ery own hands, this is certainly not a simple test.#hen Allah Taala makes someone @is own, he doesnt let him become someone elses.#hen @e ($#T) saw that when he became distracted and o+erwhelmed by lo+e for hisson, he was commanded to sacrifice this son.

$imilarly, Allah Taala noticed that @adhrat MaFoob (Alayhisalaam) lo+ed his son +erymuch, so made @adhrat Musuf (Alayhisalaam) thrown into a well and imprisoned. In thisway father was made to be separated from his son. #hen a person lo+es something otherthan Allah ($#T) then Allah ($#T)s sense of honour and pride comes into action. *ike

the @oly prophets (Alaiyhisalaam), 'riends of Allah ($#T) are also being tested.#hoe+er claims and declares his true lo+e for Almighty Allah ($#T) must be wellprepared to undergo three types of trials which as has been mentioned pre+iously aremeant for tests of sincerityD:emember that 'riends of Allah ($#T) must undergo three forms of tests? these mayoccur indi+idually or simultaneouslyD

    2) =Killat8 tests related to ones health, separation from lo+ed ones, or being cheatedon, decei+ed, let down or hurt by others.

) =7illat8 eing the recipient of inustice or false accusations.

These may take place one after another (in any order) or e+en simultaneously at any pointin ones life.

childhood, had to bear the taunts, abuse by people. @e was tortured physically, waswrongly accused, and on many occasions his body would become full of blood. @e wastrapped in a +alley for three years with his belo+ed wife @adhrat 5hadiahtul5ubra(:adiAllahTaalahuanha). @e had to tolerate hunger, lea+e his home and relati+es, andhad to migrate. This was inflicted by none others but his +ery own relati+es, had to

tolerate the false accusation and grief about @adhrat Aisha $iddiFah(:adiAllahTaalahuanha), had to bury his two sons with his own hands. In @oly wars(ghazwas( he stayed hungry and was wounded. @as was tested with illness, was effectedby magic, had to tolerate the conspiracies of hypocrites, was gi+en poison and attemptedto be murdered on many occasions. All these rigorous tests fell upon the +ery figure thatAllah @imself sends peace, blessings and salutations (durood) on and all the angels senddurood on. This is certainly a point to think about.

#hoe+er makes the claim of eGtreme lo+e for Allah ($#T), he will ha+e to go throughrigorous tests and hurdles. This is the principle of Allah ($#T). If one is patient andtolerant on these tests then he gets a higher status. If one shows gratitude, then gets the

best status. The friends of Allah are happy on receipt of each test that is that their 'riendhas sent a gift, Thank you AllahL

pity be on that person a thousand times that will be depri+ed from seeing e+en one glanceof me on the day of udgement. I asked, Hwho is that person%. AFaa 5areem ($A#)replied that person is the Hstingy one, a miser (bukheel). I asked, Hwho is the stingy one%.AFaa 5areem ($A#) replied, Hthe one, in the presence of whom my blessed name istaken and he fails to send 7uroodepaak on me.

#hen @azrat Adam (6pon @im be peace) was wedded to @azrat @awa (upon @er bepeace), the marriage giftBdowry was offered in the form of reciting 7uroodepaak uponthe elo+ed ;rophet ($A#). It is reported in a @adith that, Hthe one who recites duroodepaak abundantly shall be in the shade of the Throne (arsh) on the day of udgement. Itis mentioned in a @adith that, Hthe one who sends durood on me " times daily, AllahTaala fulfils " of his needs, in the world and 0 in the hereafter, but the one whoforgets to recite duroodepaak on me, it is as if he has forgotten the path to paradise. @ehas strayed far from the path to hea+en.

Allah ;aak 9allashanahu commands us to send peace and blessings upon the elo+ed

;rophet ($A#). #e send peace blessings upon the ;rophet ($A#) during our prayers, uttering the following, HAllahumma salli ala 8uhammadin which literally means,HAllah ;aak Mou send peace and blessings upon the ;rophet ($A#). ow Allah Taalahas commanded us to send peace and blessing on the ;rophet ($A#) but instead ofacting upon this command we reFuest to Allah ;aak 9allah $hanahu that Allah ;aak9allashanahu, Mou Mourself send peace and blessings upon the ;rophet ($A#). In theapparent sense this is going against the command but a person can only praise that, whichhe has knowledge of. The great status and eGcellence of the elo+ed ;rophet ($A#) isonly known to Allah ;aak 9allashanahu alone. This is the reason why we humbly admitthat we are not familiar with the great status and eGcellence of the ;rophet ($A#), Allah;aak 9allashanahu, only Mou are familiar with @is great status and eGcellence, that is whyMou Mourself is reFuested to send peace and blessings upon the elo+ed ;rophet ($A#)on behalf of us. #e do not ha+e the ability to eGpress the great eGcellence of the elo+ed;rophet ($A#).

o matter what form of worship (Ibaada) you adoptBperform, you cannot say with suretythat it will be accepted. To send 7uroodepaak upon the ;rophet ($A#) is such a Ibaadathat there is absolutely no doubt in its acceptance. In order for any supplication (7ua) tobe accepted it is necessary that 7uroodepaak is recited before and after it, otherwise itwill remain suspended between the hea+ens and the earth.

It is reported in a @adith that, H#hosoe+er is struck with hardship should send duroodupon me abundantly.

*astly, I reFuest you again, brothers to recite duroodepaak abundantly, as much as youcan.

Today Im going to talk about *aylatulEadr. There was once a person called $hamoon

from ani Israel, who fought with disbelie+ers for " months. The disbelie+ers wantedto arrest him, so they bribed his wife saying that if she gets her husband arrested, theywill gi+e her a whole chest full of gold. #hilst $hamoon was asleep, his greedy wife tiedhim up with a rope but $hamoon managed to break this rope with his strength. Those were so long that they would e+en touch the floor. #hilst hewas asleep his wife betrayed him by tying him up with his own plaits and informing the

disbelie+ers. The disbelie+ers arrested him and took him to the place of eGecution whichwas ! metres high and this was built o+er a single pillar. The disbelie+ers cut both theears and lips of $hamoon and then tied him to the pillar. $hamoon supplicated (madedua) to Allah ;aak 9allashanahu to gi+e him strength. Allah ;aak 9allashanahu blessedhim with strength with which he gained the ability to free himself. 4nce $hamoon wasfree, he shook the pillar with all his strength in such a way that the whole building fell onthe disbelie+ers. $hamoon became free again.

To talk about the face, height and habits of someone is also backbiting. 'or eGample, soand so is so dark, he is so short, eats so much, +ery talkati+e, +ery slow, doesnt prayproperly, doesnt perform ablution properly, +ery Fuarrelsome, aggressi+e. ToimitateBcopy someone is also backbiting, for eGample, copying someone who cant walk.

It is permissible to talk in such a manner in order to enlighten others, in a way that theone who is being talked about remains unidentified to the people. @owe+er, to talk andhint so that some people may become aware of who is being talked about, is alsoclassified as backbiting. This means that such a person is responsible for being two facedas well as committing the sin of backbiting.

To be surprised upon hearing someoneNs backbiting is also backbiting, because by seeingones interest in what is being told, the backbiter is further encouraged and thus continueswith backbiting.

If one refuses to hearapparently but in the heart, desires to hear backbiting then this is nifaak (hypocrisy). 4neshould either get up from such a gathering or engage the backbiter in some other topic.
