The data of the study were gatheredthrough the discussion of the stories

    using the problems covering the

characteristics of Fantastic-uncannywhich include having scenes that imply

    hesitation between the natural and

supernatural, and the logical reasoncontrasting the said hesitation.

    narrator

    The narrator is mad. The

    sound of the old mans

    beating heart takes place only

    within his own tortured

    imagination.

    THE BLACK CAT

    Hesitation Logical Explanation

    Marking of

    the gigantic

    cat on the

    wall

The fall off of walls trampled over the dead

cat along by the substance of a freshly-

spread plaster and because of the mixture of

white paint, the combustion, and ammonia

from the carcass of the cat resulted the

image he saw on the wall.

    The return

    of the BlackCat

Pluto had not a white hair upon any portion of

his body while this cat that he saw had a

large white spot that covered the entire chest

of the cat. As a result of his assessment on

the cat he deduced that it was not really

    Pluto.

    Hesitation Logical Explanation

    The crying

    sound from

    the wall

When the police opened the plastered wall

they saw the narratorswifescorpse and on

top of it is the cat who loudly screeched

thus causing the crying sound from the wall.

    The Cat on

    top of the

    decayed wife

The cat who witness the crime hid as the

narrator plastered his wife in the wall of the

cellar. Due to the structure of the cellar that

can be easily dislodged, the cat can easily go

through the crumpled brick. As a result the

cat stays on the decayed body of the

    narratorswife.

    Hesitation Logical Explanation

    Ghost seen by

    Roderick during

    the storm

It is a natural phenomenon caused by the

    fog and the tarn.

    Sounds heard bythe narrator

It was produced by Madelines breaking

free from the dungeon after she woke up

from catalepsy. The loud thump is

Madelines pounding on the coffin, thegrating sounds are the iron hinges

opened desperately and the clanging is

the fall of the iron door.

    Hesitation Logical Explanation

    Madelines

    appearanceafter the burial

After eight days of burial, Madeline becomes

conscious and awake from her cataleptic

malady. The sounds of her struggle and herbloody robes prove this act.

    The Fall of theUsher House

The zigzag fissure found from the roof of the

house down into the tarn and the crumbling

wall of the house proved that the mansioncan collapse any minute. As the storm

proceeds throughout the night the lightning

hit the zigzag mark that cause the house to

    collapse.

    FINDINGS,CONCLUSIONS, AND

    RECOMMENDATIONS

    22/28

    Summary of Findings

    1. The hesitations between the natural and thesupernatural laws were presented in the

three stories of Edgar Allan Poe, and as the

fantastic-uncanny approach had implied thatunusual events of the story can be explained,

Poe has taken account logical explanations

on these hesitations.2. Fantastic-Uncanny features are illustrated in

the characterization, setting, theme and plot

    of the selected short stories.

  • 7/22/2019 Fantastic Uncanny Approach

    23/28

    Conclusions

    1. In Edgar Allan Poes short stories,

    he always presented scenes with

hesitation between the natural andsupernatural occurrences. Behind

    these hesitations, he also provided

    the corresponding logicalexplanation.

  • 7/22/2019 Fantastic Uncanny Approach

    24/28

    Conclusions

    2. Edgar Allan Poe utilized the fantastic

features in his story through the following

    elements: characterization, setting, theme and

plot. Those elements work together toconvinced the reader that those concepts

conveyed natural world that we are living but

as the story goes on, those features help to

    develop hesitation that highlighted the

    Fantastic-Uncanny approach.

    Recommendations

    1. Conduct a follow-up study on the otherworks of Edgar Allan Poe.

    2. Other works of Edgar Allan Poe may be

conducted using other variables or otherapproaches like Formalism and

    Structuralism.

existence. Often, man encountersunusual occurrences in life and he may

aid such hesitations with his or her

logical explanations to reveal the realworld they are living.
