Bouma of Louisiana State University will speak about: 'Geological architecture of mud-rich submarine-fan reservoirs'. The speaker has provided the following abstract: Exploration and production of oil and gas from fine-grained, mud-rich turbidite systems (submarine fans), present in the Gulf of Mexico region and around the South Atlantic encounter several problems. Sequence stratigraphy provides a good framevvork. but the seismic resolution is insufficient to identify individual reservoir sands. 3-D seismic may give a much more complete picture, but the interpretation commonly depends on the geological expertise of the operator. Well-log correlation between wells can run into snags. Submarine fans comprise the second-largest reservoir possibility for hydrocarbons. Tectonic uplift of coarse-grained, sand-rich deposits results in tilted outcrops that are too small to study lateral correlation. However, models of these types of fans are not applicable to the Gulf. Studies of the Mississippi Fan (DSDP Leg 96) and the Permian deposits in the Tanqua Karoo of South Africa vvith their non-tilted exposures over 22 miles (34 km) provide a better example of mud-rich fans. The basin-floor fan deposits start vvith a channel complex at the base of slope. Channels cut into each other. resulting in a complex of sandstones vvith remnants of shale-rich levee deposits. causing a high tortuosity. This complex changes dovvndip into one or more individual leveed channels, often with massive channel sands and rather clean levee deposits (lovv-resistivity, lovv-contrast. thin-bedded sandstones), that can be very oil-prone. The leveed channels gradually become less channelised and change into sheet sands that have a complex internal architecture. An in-depth understanding of the architecture is required to successfully construct synthetic seismics and well logs and to compare those to the area of interest. That can be followed up vvith the construction of the best applicable model to understand the reservoir and its lateral and vertical continuity.

1995 PGK FIELD SEMINAR IN THE OSNABRüCK AREAThe 1995 PGK field seminar will take place from 12-15 May. We will stay in

Ibbenbüren, an historical coal-mining town. Among the well-exposed CarboniferousWestphalian C/D sandstones, we will examine high-sinuosity channel deposits, point-bardeposits, mudstone-dominated sequences and braided-river deposits to end with thecontact of the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian D) and the Zechstein (Coppershale).

This is a unique opportunity to see the dinosaur tracks on the Jurassic(Kimmeridgian) sediments.

The field-trip area is of particular relevance to PGK members as the excellentoutcrops are the direct equivalents of Carboniferous sequences encountered in thenorthern part of the Dutch Offshore.

A preliminary list of participants is open from now on. The cost of the trip will beapproximately ƒ300,-. The bus will leave The Hague on Friday May 12th, around 16:00pm and return to The Hague the following Sunday May 15th, around 19:00 pm. If youintend to take part in this field seminar, please complete the form below as soon aspossible, because the maximum number of participants will be 40. Applications will betreated strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Further particulars from Leo Alblas. 010- 4672016^

Secretary's Report 1994The 1994 committee consisted of these members:Chairman Prof. Ir. K J. Weber TU Delft MijnbouwVice Chairman Drs. J.T. Gelderioos GAPSTreasurer Drs. B. Clever WintershallSecretary Drs.T.C.M. v. d. Graaff-Trouwborst Thema GeologicaCommittee member Drs. A. van Wijhe Placid

In January 1994, the PGK had 370 members. During the year. one of ourmembers, Pieter van Gijzel, died, 26 new members joined, whereas 17 memberscancelled their membership and of the original 16 unfinancial members. 10 wereeventually struck off the mailing list. This left the PGK with 368 ordinarymembers on January l, 1995. In December 1994 the secretary c.s. distributed 120brochures, detailing 1994 and 1995 PGK activities and containing an applicationform, through Shell internal mail to all eligible geologists in SIPM and KSEPL.This yielded a total of 4 new members. In January 1995 the 24 members vvho, atthat stage, had not paid their dues for over four years received a letter informingthem of the fact that their membership was terminated unless they paid theiroutstanding dues. Until now, only three did so. During 1994, there were 43mutations, changes of address or employer. The 26 new members received awelcoming letter and a copy of the 1993 membership list and historical record.

During 1994, ten PGK Newsletters were sent to all members, the distributionof which was paid for by Atlas Wireline Services. Thank you Nigel, Janeand Annelies for copying and folding and being so patiënt with me while I usedthe franking machine. Unfortunately Atlas closed its The Hague office and thePGK is currently looking for a new mailing sponsor.

Fifteen letters were sent requesting speakers to present a talk. The dates of oneof the programmed lectures had to be changed and one speaker had to cancel. The two substitute speakers presented very interesting lectures. Attendance at allmeetinss was satisfactory, ranains from 29 in June to 82 in Februarv 1994. Thew J - '— •—• ^

1994 Annual dinner at Alfonso's on February 16th was attended by 32 membersand partners.

The KNGMG Nieuwsbrief and SPE Bulletin were informed of our lectures andboth listed all PGK activities. From its start we have cooperated with the DutchPetrophysical Society (DPS) by announcing each other's lectures. The PESGBand EAPG (First Break) occasionally also mentioned PGK activities.

We receïved announcements from the Palynological Circle and theSedimentological Circle, the DPS and the KNGMG. If timing permitted, theseevents were included in the PGK newsletter. The EAPG sent us seven letters overthe past year, mainly on the subject of its merger with the EAEG. Labelscontaining the names and addresses of all PGK members were supplied to theEAPG to use for their membership drive to send all PGK members a once-onlycopy of First Break and to the AAPG to distribute a call for the 1995 Nice AAPGConference.

The field seminar to the Wessex basin around Weymouth from 26-29 May ledby Professor Dr. Stoneley from Imperial College, London, attracted 36participants who enjoyed the spectacular outcrops, great weather and beautifulscenery. On September llth , twelve PGK members enjoyed Wim Dubelaar's guidedwalk past 'outcrops1 in the walls of Haarlem's historical buildings and thesubsequent visit to Teylers Museum.

PGK reprinted and distributed 80 reprints for field guides of the 1993 TheHague AAPG Conference. In January 1995 we received a 20% share of theamount the KNGMG was paid out of the profits of that conference. The PGK committee decided to use this unexpected bonus on promotion ofgeology in general and set up a competition aimed at geography teachers andstudents for the writing of a geology course booklet intended for the higherforms of primary school and the first few forms of secondary school. Thecompetition was announced in the KNGMG, KNAG, NGV and GEA February'95 newsletters and up to 20/2/95 eighteen requests for documentation packageshave been met. The brochures that make up such a package were provided byNAM, NMM, RGD and TFC. If the quality of the winning document permits, the PGK intends to multiply and distribute that booklet to as many interestedschools as possible.

The PGK committee convened four times and in between communicatedsuccessfully through countless phonecalls and faxes. All speakers were taken outto dinner after the lectures by PGK committee members or in some cases byformer committee members.

For all 1994 activides, PGK thanks the following 15 sponsors, who contributed atotal of ƒ16,635.- and were mentioned in our newsletters:

The PGK is noticing the same cut-backs as many companies andconsequently the new committee will have to economize.
