Proposed station area conceptsKent/Des MoinesThe elevated Kent/Des Moines station provides access to Highline College and surrounding neighborhoods and businesses. The conceptual design of the station area includes three new, landscaped streets to promote easy, multimodal access, including walking, bicycling and transit. Two large plaza areas feature landscaping, seating and public art. A second plaza near a 500-space garage features areas for sheltered seating.

South 272nd StreetLocated at the existing Star Lake Park-and-Ride site, the South 272nd station features a 1,100-space garage that replaces surface parking. A rebuilt portion of South 272nd Street improves vehicle/bus access to the station. Portions of 26th Avenue South and 28th Avenue South feature new sidewalks with landscaping. Improvements include a pedestrian/bicycle path to the station plaza and connections to the existing freeway bus stop.

Federal Way Transit CenterLocated in the city center, the elevated Federal Way Transit Center station serves existing businesses and the surrounding area. The station accommodates integrated bus and rail service. A new 400-space garage near the existing parking garage accommodates additional vehicles. A new street grid enhances access to the station and provides an opportunity for future development.

More transit options for a growing South SoundSound Transit’s 7.8-mile Federal Way Link Extension connects Kent/Des Moines, South 272nd Street, the Federal Way Transit Center and surrounding communities to a regional transit system that is expanding to 116 miles. Service begins in 2024.

Project benefits » Provides frequent, reliable light rail service every six to eight minutes during peak weekday commutes.

» Enables travel from the Federal Way Transit Center to Sea-Tac Airport in 15 minutes.

» Offers greater connections to jobs, school, shopping and events all over the region.

» Single contract to design and build means one unified flow of work, enhanced creativity and expedited project delivery.

Station features » New landscaped streets that increase access.

» New parking garages at all three stations with 3,200 spaces serving the route, plus drop-off and pick-up areas.

» Station canopies with a Northwest Modern design, including glass that brings in natural daylight and deep overhangs that provide shelter from rain.

» Industrial steel structures enlivened by warm finishes.

» Unique works of art by local and national artists inspired by the history, natural and cultural qualities of each station location.

What’s happeningAs Sound Transit prepares for the start of construction, expect to see the following:

» Demolition of select Sound Transit-owned properties along the corridor.

» Fieldwork to locate utilities and evaluate soil conditions.

» Relocation of utility infrastructure, including cable, telecom, water and electrical service.

» Clearing and grading to prepare for guideway construction.
