withheryoungson.VandwellingisagrowingsubcultureintheUSthatistrulythriving.Thehashtag#vanlifehasbeenusedover2milliontimesontheplatformsinceitfirstappearedin2011.I'vespentthelasttwoyearsinterviewingvandwellersofallagesandbackgrounds,andtheappealofthelifestyleisundeniablytremendous–afreedomthatishard-earnedandterrifyingattimes,yes–butonethatisendlesslyexpansive,too.Asafilmmaker,Ibelieveitismydutytotellstorieswithtruthandempathy.Wearelivinginadivisivetime,andit’simportanttoshedlightonvoicesthatlieintheshadows.TheShortHistoryoftheLongRoaddepictsthefortitudeofresilience,especiallywhenfollowingthemostdevastatingofblows,inthemostunder-resourcedofareas.WhileNola’sstoryissetwithinauniquesubculture,Ibelieveherstoryisuniversal.Ifwearelucky,orattentive,weallexperienceamomentinourliveswhenwerealizethatourownupbringinghasshapedusinwaysprofound.GilScott-Heronsaid,“Thewaytogettoknowyourselfisbytheexpressionsonotherpeople’sfaces,becausethat’stheonlythingthatyoucansee.”Ihopethisfilminspiresaudiencestotaketheroadlesstraveled,toopentheireyestoothers,andmaybetoconsideralsoifthelifethey’vechosenistrulytheonetheywantforthemselves.
