SW 7.1 After the start and after each turn,the swimmer may take one arm strokecompletely back to the legs during which theswimmer may be submerged. At any timeprior to the first Breaststroke kick after thestart and after each turn a single butterflykick is permitted. SW 4 THE START

2017 InterpretationAfter all swimmers are “stationary” (SW 4.1), any swimmerinitiating a start before the signal may be disqualified when suchmovement if observed and confirmed by both the starter andreferee (SW 2.1.6). When video timing is available (FR 4.7.3), itmay be used to verify the disqualification.

2015 InterpretationAfter all swimmers are “stationary” (SW 4.1), any swimmer whomoves before the starting signal may be disqualified when suchmovement is observed and confirmed by both the starter andreferee (SW 2.1.6). When video-tape timing system (FR 4.7.3) isavailable, it may be used to verify the disqualification.

SW 9 MEDLEY SWIMMING

SW 9.1 In individual medley events, the swimmer covers the four swimmingstrokes in the following order: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle.Each of the strokes must cover one quarter (1/4) of the distance.

Interpretation:According to SW 9.1 each of the strokes must cover one quarter (1/4) of thedistance. Being on the back when leaving the wall for the Freestyle portion ofthe Ind. Medley is covering more than one quarter of the distance in the style ofBackstroke and is, therefore, a disqualification. Backstroke swimming is onlydefined as being on the back. See also SW 5.1, SW 6.1 – SW 6.5, SW 7.1 to7.6, SW 8.1 – 8.5
