High summers are usually less eventful at Radio 4. This year is different and full of flavours.

In terms of concert recordings, on top of the annual Asian Youth Orchestra performances, there is one more youthful orchestra this year. American composer Eric Whitacre, who is most noted for his ‘Virtual Choir’ initiatives, will be in town to conduct the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra in his own works.

Another event is a mega one. The Hong Kong – Vienna Music Festival sees the joint efforts of professional players, vocalists, and adult and children choristers from the two cities, led by Jimmy Chiang in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8. It’s a challenge to stage this massive work at City Hall Concert Hall, and at the same time an interesting undertaking for us to record the Symphony of a Thousand for the first time in Radio 4’s history.

There is a special meaning in a concert held at AC Hall. Founding Father of Hong Kong’s contemporary music scene Doming Lam will be 90 years old on 5 August. At this performance entitled Doming Lam’s Piano Classics, a number of the Maestro’s works will be performed by his long-term friend and music colleague Nancy Loo. Some other distinguished musicians will also appear in this free concert. Make sure not to miss the pre-concert talk to discover more about the music and the man behind it.

Another voyage of discovery ties in with Shakespeare 400. We invite you to The Rain It Raineth – A Shakespeare Journey in Words and Music where highlights from the Bard’s scenes are recited by two actors, interspersed with a selection of songs performed by two of our Young Music Makers. Come to Studio One for a unique blend of literature and music.

Live on 4 has no shortage of other great performances for your listening pleasure. You can hear Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde from this year’s Bayreuth Festival. To some opera fanatics, the Bayreuth Festival Theatre, which was purposely built to stage Wagner’s music dramas, is almost a sanctuary. Another highlight is the longstanding Queen Elisabeth Competition, held in Belgium, which has been a springboard for many young artists to launch their international careers. You can hear the two gala concerts from this year’s Competition.

In addition to concerts, please note also three delightful series. In Songs of the Earth (in Cantonese), academic and ethnomusicologist Wong Chuen-fung will share with you music and culture from along the Silk Road. Louis Lee teams up with two music-loving friends, a psychiatrist and a biomedical scientist, to investigate composers and mental health in Madly Musical (in Cantonese). And, of course, you won’t miss the English series of Musical Exchange which will be brought to you this month by the versatile and witty David Gwilt.

炎夏,第四台通常不太繁忙。今年卻例外,節目更多姿多采。

以音樂會轉播為例,每年8月我們都會為你帶來亞洲青年管弦樂團

的演出,今個夏天多了另一股年青音樂力量。以其虛擬合唱團而

聞名於世的美國作曲家韋塔克將會來港,親自領導香港節慶管弦

樂團演出自己的作品。

另一個音樂會陣容龐大。香港―維也納音樂節將有曾智斌聯同來

自兩個城市的專業樂手、獨唱家及合唱團員送上馬勒的第八交響

曲。要在香港大會堂音樂廳演出這套大型作品是一大挑戰,而第

四台亦是首次為千人交響曲錄音,我們都很雀躍呢!

從大會堂到大學會堂。香港「新音樂之父」林樂培於8月5日慶祝

九十大壽。在這場名為樂培培樂─林樂培鋼琴作品展演中,林樂

培的多年相識兼音樂好夥伴羅乃新,會聯同幾位音樂家送上大師

的傑作。音樂會免費入場,我們更誠邀你出席音樂會前講座,進

一步認識大師的生平和創作。

另一位大師 ― 莎士比亞,你當然亦要深入認識。世界各地今年均

有舉辦活動,以紀念這位大文豪逝世四百年。在唱‧誦‧莎士比

亞中,有兩位演員為你讀出莎劇雋永的文詞,其間亦由兩位樂壇

新秀唱出多首莎士比亞的歌曲,是文字與音樂完美結合的盛會。

本 月 , 第 四 台 音 樂 會 的 節 目 更 是 大 有 來 頭 , 我 們 會 送 上 今 年

拜羅伊特音樂節的精彩節目,當中有《帕斯法爾》和《崔斯坦與

伊索爾德》。對好些歌劇迷而言,那座特別為上演華格納樂劇而

興建的拜羅伊特劇院,差不多等於聖殿。而「第四台音樂會」另

一亮點是歷史悠久,讓不少音樂家踏上青雲路的伊莉莎伯女皇大

賽,我們會為你帶來今年比賽的兩場優勝者音樂會。

音樂會以外,更請特別留意三個很有特色的專題節目,在大地之

歌中,學者兼民族音樂學家黃泉鋒會帶來絲路上的音樂與文化。

路德維則會夥拍他兩位分別是精神科醫生和生物醫學專家的音

樂同道,送上非常音樂家,就作曲家的精神健康作深入探討。當

然,你亦不能錯過由多才多藝的紀大衛主持的談天論樂。本月,

這大受歡迎的節目將以英語談天!

This year Radio 4 will be marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. The programme will

present a rich tapestry of themes in words and music. In the spotlight will be two wonderful young

HK singers – Vivian Yau and Jasper Sung, both former Young Music Makers. They are joined by two

narrators, Naomi Lawrence and Radio 4’s Jonathan Douglas. Together they will take the audience on an

unforgettable journey, taking in many of Shakespeare’s best known songs, scenes and characters. An

evening not to be missed.

今年第四台將會以文字和音樂紀念莎士比亞逝世四百週年,有女高音邱芷芊和男高音宋狄樟同台演出,他

們分別是第四台2011及2015年樂壇新秀。另外,還有演員羅倫斯,以及大家熟悉的第四台主持杜格尊會擔

任朗誦。觀眾將感受到一個充滿不同情感的精湛演出。

It will not have gone unnoticed that this year marks the four hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. The fact

that this event has been celebrated all around the world is a reminder of how his plays transcend national, cultural,

and religious boundaries. Shakespeare belongs to everyone. Still, for Brits like myself, I think Shakespeare is always

something who helps make us feel a little proud to be British, and in these difficult and uncertain times following the Brexit

vote, I, for one, turn to the Bard for a little perspective and insight, a lifting of the spirits, and for the re-assuring reminder

that life goes on, even if, as the Clown sings at the end of Twelfth Night, The rain it raineth every day.

To mark the anniversary on Radio 4, we wanted to combine music and speech, and the idea is to present a selection

of songs and readings in a seamless flow, hopefully, where the spell will not be broken by applause or conventional

introductions. We are delighted that two wonderfully gifted Hong Kong singers, the soprano Vivian Yau and the tenor

Jasper Sung, will be performing the songs, and that actress Naomi Lawrence will be joining me in the readings of the

scenes and speeches.

No Chocolate Box Cover

I was, naturally, excited by the challenge of putting such an evening together, but where does one start? I have been

asked by colleagues what the theme will be, one even suggesting the theme of youth and love. The problem there is that

in Shakespeare the human condition is no chocolate box cover. Shakespeare does not patronise or pull his punches.

Where there is love there is the possibility of death, and where there is youth there is the reminder that youth is fleeting.

The joys and vibrancy of human life are inseparable from its cruelty and brutality. Also, on a more practical level, I felt that

the speech content should be chosen in the light of the songs our singers wanted to sing.

Initial discussions, then, centred round the choice of songs.

There are a great many Shakespeare poems, and the best

have inspired a great many settings by many composers

through the centuries. Vivian proposed an intriguing mix of

lesser-known settings, including the dramatic monologue

Lady Macbeth by New Yorker Thomas Pasatieri. Jasper

leans towards the early 20th century settings of British song

composers Roger Quilter and Gerald Finzi. I was keen to have

at least one original Elizabethan setting, and Vivian will sing the

original Willow Song from Othello.

Inevitably several of the best known are included such as O

Mistress Mine, Blow Blow Thou Winter Wind, Come Away

Come Away Death, Fear No More the Heat of the Sun in both

familiar and less familiar settings, and I decided to let the

songs dictate the choices of text.

Having Its Last Word

I liked the idea of the Clown in Twelfth Night having the last

word – just as he does in the play itself. His final line makes

a reference to the idea of the performance. Shakespeare

does occasionally like to remind us that we are watching a

performance and that some applause at the end would be

nice. More intriguingly, he also occasionally suggests the idea

of ‘real life’, itself, being the performance, most compellingly,

perhaps, and certainly, most bleakly, in Macbeth, where we

are poor players that strut and fret our ‘hour upon the stage’

and then are heard no more. With the idea in mind, of ‘real life’

as the performance, I thought, what better way to begin than

with Jaques’ famous speech about the rich drama of life in As

You Like It?

Context To The Plays

Some of the songs seem to be best presented in the context

of the plays in which they appear. Twelfth Night for example,

which seems to me to be Shakespeare’s great song play, is

also the perfect setting for its songs. The scene in which the

Duke reflects upon differences between men and women to

Viola, who he supposes to be a man, exquisitely lends itself to

the play’s songs, and Haydn even composed a song setting of

one of Viola’s speeches in this beautiful scene - She Never Told

Her Love. Vivian will sing this Haydn setting. Pasatieri’s Lady

Macbeth monologue also, clearly invites a scene from that

same play, a scene, preferably, that relates to the husband/

wife relationship and to the theme of guilt. The Willow Song,

‘She never told her love, But let concealment, like a worm in the bud, Feed on her damask cheek’ – Twelfth Night

too, I feel, requires the integrity of Desdemona’s words in Act

4 of Othello.

Other songs, though, are presented in words and scenes that

are different from their original contexts. Henry Bishop’s Lo

Here the Gentle Lark is originally from the poem Venus and

Adonis, but I have placed it together with a beautifully romantic

scene from Romeo and Juliet. The famous song Take O Take

Those Lips Away, which has inspired several great settings,

is from Measure for Measure, and in the play it relates to

Angelo’s refusing to marry Mariana because she does not

have a dowry. I will present the song, though, in the context

of Hamlet’s Nunnery Scene. And I like the idea of introducing

Blow Blow Thou Winter Wind, to be sung in Quilter’s setting by

Jasper, with the opening scene of King Lear, though it appears

originally in As You Like It.

It has been fun putting it together. Whether or not it works

remains to be seen.

As ever, you, the audience, will be the judge.

Being a lover of both music and literature, I am SO thrilled to be part of this project. Shakespeare was a master at bringing his audience on an emotional roller coaster, always leaving us deep in contemplation. We relate personally to each his characters because no matter what monsters they become, we always see a part of ourselves in them. One of the pieces that I am most excited to perform, is an excerpt from Thomas Pasatieri’s settings of Lady Macbeth’s monologues. Lady Macbeth is one of the most powerful and frightening female characters in literature, it will be a fun challenge to interpret her ruthlessness and slow slide into insanity in this breathtaking piece.

William Shakespeare inspired many composers to write some of the most beautiful songs in vocal music, and his themes of love and death have given the composers freedom to interpret with their own imaginations. I find it very interesting when I look at the music written by different composers based on the same text. The differences in the harmonies and music flow create a wide variety of emotions and atmospheres. I hope that I will be able to share the ideas of the composers, and I would also like to express my own feelings through my interpretation. I hope that the audience will enjoy the concert and appreciate the beauty and subtleness of Shakespeare’s text.

熱衷音樂和文學的我,對於能參與莎士比亞四

百週年紀念音樂會,感到無比興奮。莎士比亞

透過他的作品,帶領讀者跟隨劇中人物起起跌

跌,讓人細味和反思自己的心路歷程,令人深

深陶醉;透過劇中的角色,每每能從中找到自

己的影子。其中我最期待與觀眾分享的曲目,

是帕薩堤利取材自《麥克白夫人》的獨白。麥

克白夫人是文學中最令人感到震撼和驚嚇的女

主角之一。要演繹她的無情、不羈,和慢慢沉

淪至瘋癲的境界,將會是一大挑戰。

男高音:宋狄樟

莎士比亞的文學作品為眾多作曲家帶來靈感,

啟發他們創作出不少動人悅耳的歌曲。他對愛

情和生死的描述,給予作曲家空間去想像和

表達他們的情感。作曲家運用莎士比亞同一段

文字編成樂曲,儘管他們所表達的是同一個主

題,卻有著不同的風格,帶來各種各樣的感情

和氣氛。我希望以自己的演繹方式把作曲家對

歌詞的理解表達出來,並期望聽眾能享受是次

音樂會和感受莎士比亞文學作品的美感和奧妙

之處。

On 9 July (Sat), Hong Kong recorded the highest

temperature for July in half a century. A strong band of rain

also hit our city as Super Typhoon Nepartak edged close

to Taiwan. The amber rainstorm warning was hoisted in the

evening, and thunder and lightning lit up the Hong Kong

skyline for most of the night.

Seven members of Young Music Makers 2015, namely

Chan Kai-him (erhu), Chan Tin-chi (guzheng), Cheung Wing-

lam (soprano), Alfred Lee Kin-tat (horn), Leung Ka-lok (pipa),

Elise Liu Chi-man (marimba), and Liu Tung-bo (bassoon),

as well as colleagues from Radio 4 were much worried and

concerned if the recital in Macau could go on as usual the

next day. We were glad to see that the sun was up the next

morning, which made the trip and performance possible

at the Mandarin’s House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

星期天大清早乘船出發去!

樂壇新秀濠江現光芒Young Music Makers Shine in Macau

受強烈颱風尼伯特外圍氣流影響,天文台在7月9日(星期六)

錄得四十八年來最熱的7月高溫。晚上風雲變色,天文台發

出黃雨警告。本港多處雷電交加,不少市民拍得駭人的閃

電,紛紛放上社交網站示威,看看那區的閃電最強。

在這一切發生的同時,第四台的七位樂壇新秀和多位同

事,熱切地期望暴雨警告可以盡快除下,雷電可以離我們

而去。因翌日早上,他們要出發前往澳門,參與由澳門青

年交響樂團主辦的「青交音樂節」,演出地點是被列入澳

門歷史城區和世界遺產名錄的鄭家大屋。

第二天早上天空放晴,澳門更烈日高掛,全日熱得令人透

不過氣。六位新秀:陳啟謙(二胡)、陳天姿(古箏)、張

穎琳(女高音)、李建達(圓號)、梁家洛(琵琶)、和廖

冬保(巴松管)無懼悶熱的天氣,一早齊集港澳碼頭向濠江

進發。而出發前二十四小時在英國靈閣嶺國際音樂比賽得到

「國際年青音樂家」組別冠軍的廖智敏(馬林巴琴),仍在飛

抵香港的航班上,快要與正前往澳門的隊友匯合。讓我們

‘Master’ Lam and I first met at a composers’ conference held in

Tokyo a few years back, and my first impression of him was that he

is a very kind person with a strong passion for music! Having this

chance to interview ‘Master’ Lam, I hoped to find out more about

how he got attracted to composition and his unique thoughts about

contemporary classical music.

人稱林大師的近代作曲家林樂培,1926年生於澳門。今年,多

個港澳的音樂團體分別舉行各類型的音樂會,以慶祝林大師九十大

壽,其中一場就是本月底舉行的「樂培培樂—林樂培鋼琴作品展

演」音樂會。

林大師年事已高,為免讓他勞累,筆者原本打算安排一個簡短的電

話訪問,殊不知林大師興致勃勃,邀我見面訪談!筆者和林大師首

次見面,要數幾年前在東京參加作曲家交流會的時候。印象最深刻

的,就是林大師親切的笑容,還有那孜孜不倦和熱愛音樂的態度,

談起音樂來和年輕人沒什麼兩樣。這次能有機會訪問林大師,筆者想

更了解他如何跟音樂結下不解緣,還有他對現代音樂創作的想法。

Calling himself a mischievous kid, ‘Master’ Lam said he was so

unmanageable that his family had to send him to a Catholic school

in hopes that the priests could discipline him. Solely for the sake of

having fun participating in extra-curricular activities, young ‘Master’

Lam joined the school choir. The choral conductor was also a

prolific violinist and conductor. From him, ‘Master’ Lam took his

first violin lesson and soon found his life-long interest in composing.

In 1947, ‘Master’ Lam moved to Hong Kong, eventually receiving

his musical training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto,

the University of Southern California, and the International

Conservatory of Contemporary Music in Darmstadt, Germany.

While studying in Canada, he wrote a violin sonata, Pearl of the

Orient. ‘Master’ Lam said this sonata was his first major work

because it instilled the sound of Chinese composers into the music

circles of the world.

‘Search for roots in tradition, find ways in the avant-garde’ pretty

well sums up the composition objective of ‘Master’ Lam. Over

the past decades, his works continuously show a perfect balance

between avant-garde techniques and traditional Chinese flavour.

His highly original composition concepts and styles, and the unique

colour of East meeting West has earned him the title of ‘The Father

of New Music in Hong Kong’.

In his piano works, Moonlight over Spring River and Lament of Lady

Zhao Jun, ‘Master‘ Lam purposely chose to use the piano, and to

have it imitate the sound of traditional Chinese instruments, the

guzheng and the pipa. These two plucked string instruments are

known for their elegant tone, which would not be easy to recreate

on a keyboard instrument. ’Master’ Lam explained that he always

ensures his piano works are practical despite the groundbreaking

concepts. ‘Although I don’t play the piano, I will always try out my

piano pieces on the instrument, and make necessary revisions;

after that, I will try it out again, and make further changes.’ I believe

such rigorous composition process and serious attitude towards

writing music is what made the works of ‘Master’ Lam so well

accepted worldwide.

As I had mentioned in last month’s Fine Music, renowned pianist

Nancy Loo will be performing in the upcoming birthday celebration

concert of ‘Master’ Lam. Presented by the Hong Kong Baptist

University Department of Music, in association with Hong Kong

Composers’ Guild and RTHK Radio 4, the concert will take place

on 29 August (Mon) at 8pm, at the Academic Community Hall of

HKBU. Miss Loo will be performing classics including Moonlight

over Spring River, Lullaby, Op. 1, as well as a recently completed

work The Lord’s Prayer Caprice, especially written for her. Miss

Loo told me it is a technically demanding piece and she has to

delay the originally planned premiere to allow extra time for her

to work on it. However, when she was rehearsing the piece with

‘Master’ Lam just before the premiere in January this year, she

was told that the composition was written for 4-hand piano!

Benefiting from their decades-long collaboration, Nancy Loo’s

performance will give the audience a new level of understanding

and interpretation of ‘Master’ Lam’s piano classics. The concert will

be undoubtedly inspirational. To add to the programme, soprano

Louise Kwong will be joining Miss Loo in singing Three Night Songs

of Li Bai. Violist Andrew Ling and flautist Izaskun Erdocia will also

join this celebratory concert in performing the forth-mentioned

Violin Sonata and A Song for Wei City respectively. Who knows,

The Lord’s Prayer Caprice could be played as an encore. This is

definitely a concert you do not want to miss.

被 音 樂 徹 底 重 塑 的 「 百 厭 星 」

林大師說自己兒時是一名「百厭星」,除了玩樂,對任

何事都不感興趣。家人最終拿他沒辦法,只好把他送到

修院學校學習。在修院就讀期間,年紀小小的林大師

因為貪玩參加了學校的合唱團。合唱團的指揮司馬榮神

父,原來也是小提琴家和作曲家。就是他,啟發了林大

師對音樂的興趣。其後,林大師隨神父學習小提琴,

並認定了要成為作曲家的理想。這個新環境不但真的把

「百厭星」教養成好孩子,更不經意地把音樂的種籽栽

到他心裡。就這樣成就了這位「香港新音樂之父」。

戰後林大師來到香港,無論環境有多艱難,他都會想盡

辦法繼續進修。1953年,林大師得關美楓老師推薦赴

笈加拿大,並於在學期間創作了小提琴奏鳴曲「東方之

珠」。林大師說那是他第一首大作,因為此曲讓海外國

際音樂界接觸到鮮有聽到的現代中國作曲家的音樂。林

大師多年之後學成回港,自此一直致力推動現代音樂的

發展。除協助成立亞洲作曲家同盟和香港作曲家及作詞

家協會,更幫助香港加入國際現代音樂協會。

貪 新 , 但 不 厭 舊

「從傳統中尋根,在前衛中找路」是林大師一直以來非常明確的創作方向。談到他的經典鋼琴作品〈春

江花月夜〉和〈昭君怨〉,林大師說他是特意利用鋼琴這件西洋樂器,去模仿中國樂器的琵琶和古箏,藉

此推廣中國音樂。要利用鍵盤樂器去造出撥弦樂器的優雅實在不容易,林大師解釋:「想法要突破,但

音樂寫出來要實在。雖然我不懂彈鋼琴,但所創作的每首鋼琴作品,我都會親自在鋼琴試奏,並修改,再

試奏,再修改。」對於作曲的創新思維,加上嚴謹的態度,我想這正是林大師的作品如此受歡迎的原因。

完 美 組 合 - 林 樂 培 、 羅 乃 新

筆者於上期《美樂集》提過,鋼琴家羅乃新(Miss Loo)將在音樂會中演奏林大師的作品。林大師和

Miss Loo數十年來合作無間,不久之前,林大師還特意為Miss Loo改編一首鋼琴版本的《天主經的隨

想》。作品於今年1月由Miss Loo首演。這首樂曲原本安排在另一個音樂會演出,到底是怎麼一回事呢?

原來Miss Loo練習時覺得樂曲難度太高,需要多點時間去準備。不過,當Miss Loo為1月的首演相約林大

師排練時,才知道樂曲是為四手聯彈而寫!能用一雙手應付這首二人合奏的樂曲,怪不得林大師對他這位

鋼琴作品「代言人」如此信任和滿意。

「樂培培樂 ― 林樂培鋼琴作品展演」將於8月29日(星期一)晚上8時,於香港浸會大學大學會堂舉行。

當晚的演出曲目包括早前提及的〈春江花月夜〉,還有林大師的搖籃曲,作品1。是次音樂會還邀請女高

音鄺勵齡,中提琴家凌顯祐,以及長笛演奏家艾君分別演繹林大師的《李白夜詩三首》、小提琴奏鳴曲

「東方之珠」和〈渭城曲〉。說不定《天主經的隨想》有可能會成為加奏作品呢!這場集林大師橫跨數十

年的音樂創作的音樂會,相信樂迷定必引頸以待。

7 August : Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West

Adapted from a highly successful play by the talented American writer and theatre producer

David Belasco, The Girl of the Golden West by Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924) is set in California

in the mid-nineteenth century during the gold rush period. The story, allegedly based on real

events, describes the love between Minnie, the religiously devote owner of a saloon at a mining

camp, and the notorious bandit Dick Johnson. Jack Rance, the sheriff responsible for hunting

down the outlaw Johnson, is also in love with Minnie, and she defeats him in a card game by

cheating in order to save her lover’s life. Towards the end of the opera, Johnson is captured again

and about to be lynched. Minnie arrives on horseback and persuades the miners to set him free.

The two ride away into the vast deep forest to start a new life together.

La Fanciulla del West had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in December

1910 under the musical direction of the legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini with the fabulous

Enrico Caruso in the star tenor role. It was enthusiastically received by the public and critics

alike. The work does not rely on the usual abundance of memorable melodies typical of Puccini’s

other operas. The composer conducted interesting experiments with modernistic techniques in

orchestration and in the use of continuous texture. An appropriately impressionistic atmosphere

was created for the melodrama to unfold before the audience.

The title role is interpreted by the celebrated Swedish dramatic soprano Birgit Nilsson; Dick

Johnson is sung by Brazilian tenor João Gibin; and Jack Rance, the Sheriff, is portrayed by Italian

baritone Andrea Mongelli. The Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala Milan are conducted by

Croatian maestro Lovro von Matačić.

14 August : Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

For us, the enchanting music of this opera by Benjamin Britten (1913 - 1976) should be a

welcome relief from the oppressive heat under our glaring August sun.

Britten’s operatic treatment of Shakespeare’s comedy is an interplay of three planes of

experience. On the first level, the world of the fairies is evoked by the haunting counter-tenor

timbre of Oberon; the mysterious magical sound of strings, harp and celesta; and the treble-

voiced chanting of the fairies. The second level, representing the royal Athenian court and the

lovers, is warmer in tone and more natural in expression. Its musical style is reminiscent of an

earlier European romantic tradition. The third level, describing the world of the simple rustics, has

an earthy humour reflected in the lumbering rhythms, march tunes, and the craftsmen’s farcical

tragedy celebrating the happy end of a nocturnal fantasy.

Composed to mark the reopening of the Jubilee Hall of Aldeburgh in 1960, the opera’s libretto

was prepared by Britten in collaboration with his life partner, the tenor Peter Pears. We shall

enjoy a fine recording conducted by the composer with a top-ranking British cast featuring

counter-tenor Alfred Deller as the fairy king Oberon, soprano Elizabeth Harwood as Tytania the

fairy queen, boy-soprano Stephen Terry as Puck, tenor Peter Pears as Lysander, and soprano

Josephine Veasey as Hermia. The Choirs of Downside and Emanuel Schools and the London

Symphony Orchestra provide magnificent support under the musical direction of Benjamin

Britten.

21 August : Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District

As the most important Soviet composer after Prokofiev, Dimitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) spent

his entire creative life in Russia and experienced traumatic ups and downs in his continuous

struggle with the official party-line and artistic ideology. By the time he graduated from the St

Petersburg Conservatory at the age of 19, he was already recognised as a brilliant composer of

great originality, and he continued to develop at a rapid pace, becoming internationally admired

as the best symphonist and chamber music composer of his time.

Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District is the second of Shostakovich’s two completed operas.

The composer and writer Alexander Preys adapted the libretto from a short novel by Nikolai

Leskov. Katerina is married to the son of the wealthy merchant and landowner Ismailov, who

catches her in bed with her lover Sergei. The adulterous couple murders the old man, but their

crime is eventually discovered. In transit as a convict to Siberia, Katerina is taunted by Sergei’s

new mistress. She kills her rival by drowning, together with her victim, in the icy water of a river.

In a recording made in Paris, soprano Maria Ewing sings the role of Katerina. Her lover Sergei is

sung by tenor Sergei Larin. They perform with a large cast of soloists supported by the Chorus

and Orchestra of the Opera Bastille of Paris conducted by Myung-Whun Chung.

28 August : Thomas’ Hamlet

Ambroise Thomas (1811 - 1896) was an exact contemporary of Wagner and Verdi. He had

a special gift for melodies, and, at his prime, he was one of the most respected and admired

French composers. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome for composition on graduation from

the Paris Conservatoire, of which he became Professor of Composition and then the Director

later in life. He wrote a score of operas on ambitious subjects based on great literature. On two

of these, Mignon and Hamlet, his fame now rests.

First produced in Paris in 1868, Hamlet was set to a libretto by Michel Carré and Jules Barbier

that followed Shakespeare’s plot quite faithfully, retaining the key episodes and reducing only the

non-essential details and characters. Thomas was, however too eager to yield to the prevailing

French grand opera conventions and fashionable tastes of the Parisian public. This explains

the work’s less-than-frequent revival in our time. Yet it did receive a rapturous welcome and

was considered the most important French opera of its age. The protagonist’s drinking song,

his soliloquy, the King’s prayer and particularly Ophelia’s mad scene are amongst the most

celebrated highlights of the opera.

Our distinguished cast includes baritone Thomas Hampson in the title role, soprano June

Anderson as Ophelia, bass Samuel Ramey as King Claudius, and mezzo-soprano Denyce

Graves as Queen Gertrude. The Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the London Philharmonic

Orchestra give excellent support under the baton of Antonio de Almeida.

1 August – How Best to Listen to Music

How do people listen to music? Is there a best way to listen to music? How can one get the best out of a musical performance? These

and other aspects of listening to music were discussed in a lively fashion by my two guests, composer Chan Hing-yan and musicologist

Daniel Chua and myself. Perhaps there is no best way of getting one’s ear around the music one hears, but it has always seemed to

me that the intellect should be as involved as much as the emotions. Listen to what we all have to say about this, to me, fascinating

subject in Musical Exchange.

An evening of rare conversation with distinguished professionals who make music their life and are changing the face of Hong Kong’s classical musical scene.

8 August – National Traits in Music

Composer Chan Wing-wah and musicologist Giorgio Biancorosso joined me for a discussion of what makes

Russian music Russian, French music so clearly French and so

on through the countries of much of the world. Even though the

world has become a smaller place of recent years, composers

from different parts of the world still tend to display identifiable

national traits in their music. Is this something they are born

with, or is it something they grow up into? See what comes out

of this interesting discussion in the forthcoming programme.

15 August – The Value of Competitive Music Making

Music has never seemed to me to be an art which lends itself to

competition, since what every artist is doing is attempting to discover

the true nature of the music he or she plays, and to deliver it to the

audience in the most effective manner. However, these days there

are innumerable international and local competitions, as well as

many competitions for young players. What are the benefits of

such competitions? Do they serve the music? Do they help young

musicians to improve themselves? Find out what are the views of my

guests Adrian Walter, Director of the HKAPA, and pianist Nancy Loo.

22 August – Chamber Music versus Orchestral Music

All my life I have been an avid chamber music player, and, although I

think the range of orchestral music has an enormous amount to offer,

it seems to me that many people concentrate too much on that aspect

of music, and so deny themselves the wonders and beauties that are

to be found in the huge range of chamber music from all periods. I am

joined for a discussion about this by Elvis Chan, violist in the RTHK

Quartet, and leader of the violas in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and

Richard Bamping, Principal Cellist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

All three of us have large experience of both kinds of music, and we try

to communicate our love of chamber music in the programme.

29 August – The Role of Government in the Arts

This is a large subject, and one with which my guests on Musical

Exchange are very familiar. Gordon Siu, Founder of the Music

Office of HKSAR, Richard Tsang, composer and experienced arts

administrator, and Michael MacLeod, Chief Executive of the Hong

Kong Philharmonic, join me in tackling this sometimes vexed subject.

What should the role of government be in encouraging the arts?

Should the government be involved at all? What are the benefits and

disadvantages of having government involved? One of the problems

for the arts is that they are expensive if they are to be done well,

and they do need a good deal of financial support. Experience in

communist Russia shows what can happen when government takes

too close an interest, and yet there is no doubt that artists lacked for

nothing in that regime, but this came with the proviso that they created

works which furthered the aims of the government. What is the best

approach for governments these days?

靈禽瑞獸聚天地 嬌花蒼木說枯榮

踏入8月,「樂在神州」會承接7月中旬所開展的勢頭,繼續引領大

家一起探索以「人與大自然」為主題的各類音樂,從而了解人與大自

然之間的關係―人類如何應對大自然的各種轉變?人處於大自然環境

中如何安身立命?

為此,本月的「樂在神州」會朝着四方面進發。我們會依次品嚐以飛

禽走獸、花草樹木、山川河嶽、日月星宿為題的各種音樂,包括不同

地域的器樂與聲樂作品。為使樂迷對每集所播樂曲的主題一目了然,

我特意為每集節目擬定主題,依次是:「靈禽瑞獸聚天地」、「嬌花

蒼木說枯榮」、「登山臨江盡抒懷」、「譜曲動樂頌三光」。

至於這四集節目的選曲,可從時代、地域和樂種三方面介紹。先談時

代,節目中既選播古曲,例如以民族樂團合奏的〈滄海龍吟〉、古琴

與編鐘合奏的〈幽蘭〉、琴、簫、二胡合奏的〈洞庭秋思〉,亦有較為

現代的作品,例如箏曲〈建昌月〉、笛曲〈花泣〉等。

如果按地域而言,四集節目涵蓋了廣闊的地域,東西南北,幾乎無所

不包。例如新疆冬不拉樂曲〈紅玫瑰〉、陝西民歌〈崖畔上開花〉、

內蒙民歌〈十五的月亮〉,當然還有「廣東三寶」裡的潮樂〈楊柳春

風〉、漢樂〈雙飛燕〉、粵樂〈櫻花落〉等。

樂種方面,大家會享受到器樂與聲樂作品。單以器樂而言,節目裡既

有合奏亦有獨奏,例如箜篌獨奏曲〈高山流水〉、揚琴獨奏曲〈節日

的天山〉、敲擊合奏〈鴨子拌嘴〉、鼓樂〈老虎磨牙〉、以木琴主奏的

粵樂〈醒獅〉等。至於聲樂曲,大家會聽到藏族民歌〈金色的太陽〉、

蒙古民歌〈十五的月亮〉、同樣叫作〈對花〉的安徽和江蘇民歌、以歌

聲導賞東嶽諸般風貌的〈泰山景〉。

此外,8月份的「樂在神州」亦會選播一些頗為冷門的樂曲,例如潮

州音樂〈雙咬鵝〉和西安鼓樂〈遊月宮〉。前者是潮樂裡的一個套曲,

由不同的曲牌音樂組成,以大嗩吶和小嗩吶扮作兩隻鵝,由相戲以

至相鬥,情況十分有趣。除嗩吶外,當中有鑼鼓伴奏。至於後者,也

是一個套曲,由西安當地的三首小曲編合而成。由於演奏〈遊月宮〉

時需要八件樂器,包括笛、笙、管,這首樂曲亦稱〈亂八仙〉。稱之為

「亂」,其實是指俗樂的意思。

上述兩首樂曲最難得的地方,是由當地名家親自演奏,確保原湯原

汁。酷愛地方音樂的樂迷,當必咸表稱善。

「絲綢之路」向來是個靈活的文化概念。歐亞大陸各自稱是絲路成

員的國家與民族,大概各有自己一套關於絲路歷史與文化內涵的說法。

近年隨着美國的絲路合奏團(Silk Road Ensemble)和阿迦汗基金會

(Aga Khan Foundation)等文藝團體的推廣,中亞細亞和中東等絲路

核心地帶的聲音,日漸為世界音樂聽眾所熟悉。以絲路作招徠的表演形

式,更是全球大小藝術節的新寵。所謂「絲綢之路」,是否一種籠統的

音樂風格?抑或是學者和音樂家的歷史想像?還是政商權貴挪用的市場

和戰略概念?相信這都是今後世界藝壇的焦點。

聽見絲路—波斯、土耳其與阿拉伯的中東音樂世界

中東的語系、信仰和音樂

「大地之歌」8月開始一連三個月共十三集節目,將為聽眾帶來絲

綢之路傳統和現代的聲音。本月節目會集中聽遊中東地區的音樂。

在西方古典音樂和歌劇中,中東一向是個既神祕又可怕的東方異

域,如此扭曲、偏頗的中東印象一直持續到今天。狹義上的中東包

含三大語言文化區:北非和黎凡特(Levant)諸國(如巴勒斯坦、

敘利亞、黎巴嫩等)的阿拉伯語(Arabic)世界;以伊朗為中心的

波斯語(Persian)世界,以及土耳其和突厥語(Turkic)世界。

信仰在音樂表演中十分重要,不論是清真寺的宣禮拜贊(adhān),

還是蘇菲教派(Suf ism)優美動人的詩歌與旋律,都以音樂委身

敬畏,彈唱不卑不亢。伊斯蘭文化在絲綢之路影響廣泛,但猶太教

和東正教傳統也源遠流長。神聖也好、世俗也好,大部份音樂都以

「調式」為核心單位。調式在阿拉伯音樂稱「maqām」,波斯音樂稱

「dastgāh」,土耳其音樂則稱「makam」,是一套嚴密的音階與旋

律系統,是學習音樂的基礎,也是創作與即興演奏的不二法門。

中東音樂的表演形式

中東音樂的表演形式多樣。在西方音樂世界聽眾最為熟悉的,大概

是一種稱為「 takht」的阿拉伯室樂合奏:一般有四、五件樂器,

包括烏德琴(ūd)、卡農琴(qānūn)、蘆葦笛(nāy)、小提琴

(kamān)和鈴鼓(riqq),曲種眾多,多以套曲形式出現,也為歌

唱伴奏,以支聲復調(heterophony)合奏,與東亞絲竹室樂有很多

共通之處。這種合奏形成於十九世紀末、在二十世紀初冒起的阿拉

伯城市大為流行,如開羅(Cairo)、貝魯特(Beirut)和大馬士革

(Damascus)等。六、七十年代著名音樂大師,洛杉磯加州大學民

族音樂學的華斯教授(Ali Jihad Racy)(1943- )將這種合奏形式從黎

巴嫩帶到美國,透過演奏、教學和研究廣泛流傳。今日北美大學音

樂系中東 / 阿拉伯樂團的曲目與風格,大多得其傳授或再傳。文化軌

跡往往出人意料:筆者數年前到巴勒斯坦(Palestine)重鎮拉姆安拉

(Ramallah)拜訪比爾宰特大學(Birzeit University)著名的薩伊德

國立音樂學院(Edward Said National Conservatory of Music),也到

處發現華斯教授教學和演奏的影響。

一部份以「 takht」形式演奏的旋律和曲式,源自歷史悠久的鄂圖

曼(Ottoman)宮廷音樂。今日土耳其首都伊斯坦堡(Istanbul),

即舊日帝國首都君士坦丁堡(Constantinople),遊客可以購票觀賞

著名的蘇菲迴旋祭禮(whirling dervishes),當中莊嚴迷人的伴奏

音樂,也來自鄂圖曼宮廷,風格奉為正宗古典。與此同時,今日土

耳其大部份國土所在的小亞細亞(Anatolia)幅員遼闊,北臨黑海,

西南接地中海,東南與阿拉伯、波斯及高加索地帶(Caucasus)

為鄰,各地保存豐富民間音樂風格。再往東便是伊朗及其承載的波

斯音樂文化:最為聽眾熟悉的波斯樂器,大概是圓球共鳴箱提琴

(kamāncheh)和兩排碼揚琴(santūr)。波斯古典音樂的調式操作和套

曲理論極為高深,自成一格,堪稱絲綢之路藝術的典範。

Yau Siu-pun, an active and authoritative figure in the Chinese music scene, died at midnight on 8 July. He was 64 years old.

A musician who excelled in diverse fields, teaching, performing, composing, conducting, and critiquing, Yau acquired his musical knowledge himself, being self-taught, and had a substantial understanding of many different instruments. In 1983, under the direction of Hwang Yautai, he earned a Master’s degree in ‘Research in Various Instruments in the Chinese Music Ensemble’. Having involved in teaching and performing for over 40 years, Yau had many students; he had been a music lecturer at Hong Kong Tsing Hua College and Acting Chairman of the Hong Kong Nang Yan College of Higher Education. As a composer, his output

genres ranged from ensemble and solo works, to larger forms such as concertos and musicals. In addition, he also made arrangements of many instrumental and vocal works. He also made a number of recordings.

For over 20 years, Yau served in the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra as a performer, a writer of concert programme notes, and a conductor in many school tours. Yan Huichang, the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, recognises the substantial contribution Yau made in both the development of the Orchestra and in education, including taking part in world tours, playing the liuqin, sanxian and zhongruan in concerts, and composing and arranging music for the Orchestra. Among those works is the commissioned work The Transformation of Tian Shui Wai Variations, part of the Cadenzas of Hong Kong series. ‘His death is indeed a huge loss for the Chinese music scene,’ says Yan.

Chow Fan-fu, a leading music critic in Hong Kong, wrote about Yau. In his article, entitled ‘Hong Kong has lost an all-rounded musician: In heartfelt honour of Yau Siu-pun,’ Chow said that Yau possessed many qualities of a good ‘Hong-Konger’. He was smart, realistic, diligent, driving, optimistic, easygoing, and sincere. Chow also recalls that when Yau decided to step on the musical path, he was already very clear that it would not make him wealthy, but it would be enough to feed him. Yau once said, ‘Living in Hong Kong, if you have talent, are willing to work and willing to make an effort, you will surely survive.’

活躍於本港中樂界及舉足輕重的音樂家之一的邱少彬(又名邱岩生),於7月8日零晨與世長

辭,享年六十四歲。

邱少彬集教學、演奏、創作、指揮和音樂評論於一身。原來,他的音樂造詣大部份都是靠自學得

來,對各類樂器均有深入認識。1983年,在黃友棣指導下,他以《國樂團內諸樂器分析研究》

考獲碩士資格。其後他從事教學接近四十年,曾任香港清華書院音樂系講師、能仁書院音樂系代

主任,可謂桃李滿門。作曲方面,邱少彬的創作類型多樣化,包括合奏曲、獨奏曲、協奏曲、舞

台劇,另外更編寫不少器樂和聲樂作品,亦曾灌錄多張唱片。

邱少彬於香港中樂團任職近二十年,曾擔任演奏家、負責編寫場刊以及在學校的巡迴演出擔任指

揮。香港中樂團藝術總監兼首席指揮閻惠昌提到,邱少彬先後隨團到世界各地演出,亦常於音樂

會擔任柳琴、三弦和中阮獨奏,無論對樂團的發展或是中樂教育工作均貢獻良多。他曾為樂團創

作和編寫多首中樂作品,包括樂團的委約創作―「香江華彩」系列作品《天水圍變奏曲》。閻惠

昌形容邱少彬的離世是香港中樂界一大損失。

樂評人周凡夫亦撰文表揚邱少彬,題目為:「深切懷念邱少彬•香港痛失音樂全才」。他形容邱

少彬「具有『香港人』好些正面的特質,頭腦靈活、面對現實、努力工作、主動積極、性格樂

觀、不拘小節、待人以誠。」周凡夫更憶述當年邱少彬決定選擇音樂作為全職工作的時候,已很

清楚此路不會讓他賺大錢,卻不會餓死。邱少彬曾說﹕「在香港,有才能、肯工作、肯努力,必

定可以生存。」

Starting from August on Sunday at noon, Songs of the Earth, hosted by Wong Chuen-fung in Cantonese, will bring to its listeners a series of 13 episodes of musical sounds from traditions across the Silk Road. This month we will focus on the Middle East, where the ancient Ottoman musical heritage in Turkey and Arab nations in North Africa and the Levant (Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, etc.) resonate with a wide range of Anatolia folk soundscapes and Iran’s Persian classical traditions.

21/8 : 跳蹦蹦的薩爾斯堡之子

最 近 , 筆 者 重 溫 了 一 齣 八 十 年 代 的 經 典 電 影 《 莫 扎 特 傳 》

(Amadeus);看過該影片的朋友,一定會對戲中主人翁莫扎特

哈哈傻笑的相貌印象深刻。導演正正希望突顯莫扎特浪蕩不覊的

個性。這位音樂神童的「跳跳紮」,大概來自專注力缺乏過度活

躍症(Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, ADHD);對莫扎特多

加管束的父親常常拿他沒辦法。麥敦平會講解此症患者的情緒起

伏,而張智鈞在作結時則介紹另一位年代和文化跟莫扎特很不一

樣,但亦是患上此病的美國作曲家歌舒詠。

14/8 : 百病叢生的舒曼

德國作曲家舒曼也許跟自割耳朵的畫家梵高齊名。他自投萊茵河

尋死,及後被關進精神病院。舒曼患有多種精神病,但最明顯的

莫過於兩極性情緒病(Bipolar Disorder)。此病又名鬱躁症,患者

除了要承受抑鬱的折磨之外,還有精神亢奮的狀態。曾在美國波

士頓以鋼琴家身份,幾乎演出過所有舒曼室樂作品的張智鈞,會

透過數首精心挑選的舒曼作品,與麥敦平分析舒曼曲折的一生。

28/8 : 命運叩門

貝多芬一直被視為英雄式的人物,標誌着「人定勝天」、不屈

不撓的奮鬥精神。一百年前,法國大文豪羅曼•羅蘭(Romain Rolland)更以他的一生作為長篇小說《克里斯朵夫》(Jean-Christophe)主人翁的楷模,頌揚藝術家的理想主義。少年時已

顯露音樂才華的貝多芬沒有莫扎特那般幸運,有一位「照顧」他

成長的爸爸,取而代之的是一位不負責任的兇惡嚴父。貝多芬年

紀輕輕便要擔起養家的重責,年青時的經歷形成了他孤僻和複雜

的性格。除了人際關係有問題之外,貝多芬面對命運給他的各種

挑戰時更倍覺吃力,亦想過自殺,但最終透過藝術克服了如失聰

等苦難。麥敦平將分析貝多芬把苦楚昇華的心路歷程。

西方一向有共同的觀點,就是藝術家(尤其是十九世紀浪漫時期的藝術家)大半都不是「正常人」。有些藝術家「把靈魂賣給魔鬼

來換取他們的天賦」(如意大利小提琴怪傑巴格尼尼)、有些則是行為和思想皆古怪、個性孤僻和不善社交、愛活在自己的世界裏的

聰明人。當然也有些更堪稱為「瘋癲」― 最著名的例子莫過於自割耳朵的荷蘭畫家梵高。「不正常的天才」這觀點,除了衍生出不少

傳奇和佳話,更引起科學家的興趣,嘗試以較客觀、不渲染的視角分析「天才」這回事,尤其是創作跟精神病、心理病的微妙關係。

此節目「非常音樂家」一共八集,由筆者與兩位好友 ― 香港中文大學醫學院精神科的麥敦平醫生,以及中大醫學院生物醫學學院張智

鈞博士對談,每集探討一個關於精神病與西洋古典音樂的議題。麥氏和張氏同時分別為樂評和室樂演奏家,他們既能從專業角度探討

問題,亦能從「音樂分析」出發,實在不可多得!節目同時讓聽眾了解常見的精神病,並會澄清其中一些誤解。每集節目內容如下:

Local Young Musicians and Groups Triumph in Overseas Competitions

This is a time of the year when many young musicians and school choirs travel out of Hong Kong to challenge themselves in international music competitions. Many of them come home in triumph and with trophies!

不少學校合唱團與年輕音樂家近日衝出香港,挑戰多項國際音樂比賽。今年一如以往,成績彪炳。

Adrian Sit 薛毅章 (Conducting 指揮)

Adrian Sit was awarded First Prize in the First International Conductors’ Competition Augsburg, held between 2 – 7 July. Adrian mentioned that he felt especially delighted to work with the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra leading Richard Strauss’ Don Juan in the semi-final. Adrian graduated from the Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music, and is currently pursuing a Conducting Master’s degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Since arriving in Glasgow he has conducted prestigious orchestras including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.薛毅章於7月2至7日舉行的第一屆德國奧格斯堡國際指揮比賽,勇奪冠軍。令薛毅章感到榮

幸的,是能夠於準決賽率領奧格斯堡愛樂樂團,演奏李察•史特勞斯的《唐璜》。薛毅章於

香港浸會大學音樂系取得學士學位,現時於蘇格蘭皇家音樂學院修讀指揮碩士課程。他曾與

多個著名樂團合作,如英國廣播公司蘇格蘭交響樂團、皇家蘇格蘭國家樂團等。

Elise Liu 廖智敏 (Marimba 馬林巴琴)

Elise Liu Chi-man was winner with the marimba in the category of ‘Young International Musician’. During the final, Elise performed Astor Piazzolla’s Verano Porteno and Pietro Mascagni’s Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana. She has just completed Form 5 from the Diocesan Girls’ School. She is also one of Radio 4’s Young Music Makers 2015. 廖智敏參與「國際年青音樂家」組別,取得冠軍。她在決賽中以馬林巴琴演奏皮亞蘇拉的〈布爾諾

斯艾利斯之夏〉和馬斯康尼《鄉村騎士》的間奏曲。廖智敏剛於拔萃女書院完成中五課程。她亦是

香港電台第四台2015年的樂壇新秀。

Sabrina Chan 陳曉睿 (Sheng 笙)

Sabrina Chan won first place in the ‘Open Folk Solo (Instrumental)’ category playing Wen Jialiang’s Winter Hunt. The 15-year-old Sabrina is currently a student in the Heep Yunn School, and was also a winner of the 68th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in the category of ‘Sheng Solo – Advanced’. In 2013, Sabrina was selected as one of Radio 4’s ‘Yes I Can!’ recitalists.陳曉睿參與「民族音樂獨奏(公開組)」組別,以中國傳統吹管樂器笙演奏文佳良的〈冬獵〉獲冠。

陳曉睿現年十五歲,就讀協恩中學,亦為第六十八屆香港學校音樂節的「笙獨奏―深造組」冠軍得

主。陳曉睿是2013年第四台「Yes I Can! 音樂廳」演奏者之一。

Rachel Ng 吳淑晴 (Voice 聲樂)

Rachel Ng Shuk-ching won first place in the category of ‘Vocal Solo under 16’. One of the songs in her repertoire was the compulsory Schubert’s Die Forelle. Rachel is 15 years old, and is currently a Form 4 student in the Diocesan Girls’ School.吳淑晴於「16歲以下獨唱」組別中,勇奪冠軍。是次參賽歌曲包括大會指定舒伯特的〈鱒魚〉。吳淑

晴現年十五歲,為拔萃女書院中四學生。

The annual music festival – Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod was held in North Wales between 5 - 10 July. This year three young Hong Kong musicians won championship in different categories.

一年一度的靈閣嶺國際音樂節於7月5至10日在威爾斯北部舉行。今年三位來自香港的年輕音樂家,於不同組別中勇奪冠軍。

Wah Yan College Kowloon 九龍華仁書院

Under the direction of Lesley Chan, Wah Yan College Kowloon Boys’ Choir won five prizes in the 17th International Choral Kathaumixw held between 5 - 9 July in Slovenia, including First Prize in the categories of ‘Youth Choir under age 25’, ‘Chamber Choir’ and ‘Contemporary Choral Music’, and a first-runner up in the category of ‘Children’s Choir under age 16’. They were also given the ‘Choir of the World at Kathaumixw Award’. A totem pole will be shipped to Hong Kong and fixed here in half a year’s time, which represents music, culture and friendship.在陳家曦的領導下,九龍華仁書院合唱團於7月5至9日舉行的第17屆卡塔

苗國際合唱節中贏得五個獎項。他們於「二十五歲以下青年合唱團」、

「室樂合唱團」及「現代合唱音樂」組別中勇奪冠軍,而「十六歲以下兒

童合唱團」組別則奪得亞軍。他們更獲頒「卡塔苗世界合唱團大獎」。標

誌著音樂、文化與友誼的卡塔苗圖騰柱,將於半年後送抵香港。

Marymount Secondary School 瑪利曼中學

The Marymount Secondary School Choir participated in the 27th Béla Bartók International Choir Competition held between 7 - 10 July in Debrecen, Hungary. Under the direction of Jane Lau, they were named the champion in the ‘Youth Choir’ category and won the ‘Best Interpretation Prize in Contemporary Music’. 瑪利曼中學合唱團於7月7至10日參與在匈牙利德布勒森舉行的第二

十七屆巴托國際合唱節。在瑪利曼中學音樂總監劉迪恩的領導下,

合唱團於「青年合唱團」組別中贏得冠軍,並獲頒「現代音樂最佳

演繹獎」。

Heep Yunn School 協恩中學

The Heep Yunn School Choir joined the 8th International Youth Music Festival held in Bratislava, Slovakia, between 7 - 10 July. Under the direction of conductor Joyce Yu, the School Choir won three prizes, including Gold Awards in the categories of ‘Children’s Choir under 16’ and ‘Contemporary Music’, as well as the ‘Grand Prix Award’. Under conductor Tang Wing-hong, the school orchestra and ensemble also won Gold Awards in the categories of ‘Orchestra under 21’, and ‘Orchestra under 16’ respectively. 協恩中學於7月7至10日參加了於斯洛伐克布拉迪斯拉發舉行的國際

青年音樂節。在指揮余智敏帶領下,協恩中學合唱團勇奪三個獎項,

包括「十六歲以下兒童合唱團」和「現代音樂」金獎,以及「全場總

冠軍」。指揮鄧永康亦率領協恩中學樂團及合奏組,分別於「二十一

歲以下樂團」及「十六歲以下樂團」組別獲得金獎。

BBC Proms 2016

It is called the ‘World’s Greatest Classical Music Festival’ and it’s now in its 122nd season. Starting off our series of Proms concerts this year is naturally the First Night from the Royal Albert Hall. Tchaikovsky’s ravishing Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture launches the Festival’s celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare. Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta makes her Proms debut in Elgar’s hauntingly lyrical Cello Concerto. Rounding off the programme is a cantata that Prokofiev fashioned from his film score to the patriotic film Alexander Nevsky, here sung by Olga Borodina. The BBC Symphony and two BBC choruses are conducted by Sakari Oramo. There are many more Proms to come….

今年踏入第一百二十二屆的逍遙音樂節,首場演出曲目包括柴可夫斯基的《羅密

歐與朱麗葉》幻想序曲,以紀念莎士比亞逝世四百週年,還有阿根廷大提琴家加

比塔演奏艾爾加的大提琴協奏曲,以及女中音歐爾嘉•鮑蘿汀娜演唱浦羅歌菲夫

的清唱劇《亞歷山大•涅夫斯基》。指揮奧拉姆於皇家亞爾拔音樂廳領導英國廣

播公司交響樂團及兩隊合唱團演出,為「全球最大型的古典音樂節」揭開序幕。

We present the Bayreuth 2016 production of Wagner’s last work, Parsifal, a sacred music drama with a plot drawn from medieval legend. It was written specifically for the special acoustic and ambience of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre from where this live recording comes. Conductor Helmut Haenchen leads the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra & Chorus with tenor Klaus Florian Vogt as Parsifal and mezzo-

soprano Elena Pankratova as Kundry.

Queen Elisabeth Competition

Since its foundation, the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Brussels) is considered one of the most challenging and prestigious music competitions in the world – and it is more than that. From the competition’s website: ‘The Queen Elisabeth Competition is, for many, a slice of life, an enchanted interlude in which culture seems to make some slight inroads into the gloom cast by crises, rationalisation, epidemics, rain, and conflict.’ Indeed it is and you can escape with us over two evenings when we bring you the Piano Competition 2016 and its rich and varied repertoire. In these concerts you can hear the sixth to second laureates and the First Prize winner, Lukáš Vondráček, the only Czech musician to have won the prestigious award.

David Greilsammer and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta

‘Greilsammer’s conducting and piano playing generate a

freshness and imagination that allow each of the works to

be enjoyed as a dynamic interpretation in its own right.’

(The Telegraph) Known for his inspiring and innovative

programming, David Greilsammer appears as pianist and

conductor with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in a programme

of Rameau’s Orchestral Suite from his Operas, Haydn’s

‘Drumroll’ Symphony, and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17

in G, the last movement of which has a theme Mozart’s pet

starling could sing, though always with one note out of tune.

Yellow River

The Yellow River Piano Concerto is an adaptation of

Xian Xinghai’s The Yellow River Cantata by a team of

composers from the Central Philharmonic Society. Among

the members of the creative team is Shi Shucheng, himself

an accomplished pianist who has performed the work

throughout the world to critical acclaim. In this concert,

he delivers his own insights into this signature piece with

the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Renowned conductor

Chen Tscheng-hsiung brings also works spanning across

Chinese and Western music, including Chen Ning-chi’s

The Phoenix that Rises from the Ashes featuring Wu Lin

as konghou soloist, and Shostakovich’s Festive Overture

in Maestro Chen’s own adaptation.

黃河

「黃河」鋼琴協奏曲,由中央樂團五位作曲家根據冼星

海的《黃河大合唱》改編而成。石叔誠是創作小組其中一

員,他亦是優秀的鋼琴家,曾將樂曲帶往世界各地彈奏,

屢獲好評。在音樂會中,他會融入對「黃河」鋼琴協奏曲

的深刻見解,聯同香港中樂團演奏此曲。同場亦有著名資

深指揮陳澄雄,帶來橫跨中、西樂多首作品,包括由陳能

濟創作、吳琳獨奏的箜篌協奏曲「浴火鳳凰」,以及由陳

澄雄親自移植,蕭斯達高維契的節日序曲。

The Hong Kong – Vienna Music Festival: Mahler Symphony No. 8

The Hong Kong – Vienna Music Festival is an initiative by the Vienna Boys’ Choir, aiming at promoting collaboration and exchange between music talents of the two cities. Concluding the six-week Festival is a performance of Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 8. Nicknamed the Symphony of a Thousand, the work utilises a gigantic force of eight vocal soloists, joint choruses, and a huge orchestra. Celebrated soloists from Vienna and Hong Kong are joined by choirs and musicians of flagship orchestras, together with students from tertiary institutions from both cities in this unprecedented collaboration with

the Vienna Boys’ Choir led by Jimmy Chiang.

維港音樂節:馬勒第八交響曲

「維港音樂節」由維也納兒童合唱團創辦,致力推動香港與維也納兩地音

樂人才交流合作。長達六星期的音樂節,以馬勒的曠世鉅作第八交響曲劃

上圓滿句號。樂曲規模浩大,採用八位獨唱家、聯合合唱團及大型樂團,

故別名為「千人交響曲」。指揮曾智斌,領導來自香港與維也納的著名獨

I learned that I was not logical enough to be a criminal psychologist the day

before I handed in my university application, yet applying for music would get me

into a Top 20 university, and it would be good for the school’s reputation. When

I first started university, I often asked myself, ‘Why am I studying things that I

don’t enjoy?’ Then I realised art is a reflection of one’s self-identity in the most

unaffected manner and because art is very personal, it has no right or wrong.

Although artistic expression comes in many forms, it is music in which I see

beauty. My goal is to play an important role in the management, promotion, and

advocacy of art organisations on a national and international level.

I have always been fond of the saying ‘think outside the box’. This statement

accurately describes how I tackle all the problems and challenges I face on a

daily basis. As an artist and academic, I find that hands-on training is the best

way to learn. Interacting with other students and professionals helps me to learn

and retain information much more affectively. While the pursuit of being an art

administrator is my prime goal and objective today, my wide variety of activities

and interests help to keep me well rounded and personable.

This year, I have had the honour to be a summer intern at Radio 4, so that I can

learn more about music and radio, to meet more professionals, and to tackle

more challenges. I was absolutely thrilled to watch producers doing live shows

and meeting guests and artists face to face, including the RTHK Quartet and

Howard Elias, the film critic, because I can get first-hand information on their

expertise. I am always hungry for more knowledge, therefore I often read books.

English literature is also something I am quite fond of; I particularly enjoyed

writing and compiling the materials for the Shakespeare concert featured in this

month’s Fine Music.

In my free time, I teach blind and autistic young adults violin, piano and music in

general. Teaching them requires a lot of patience and skill. There are times that I

feel so defeated and want to give up, but I guess you wouldn’t know how much

you have achieved if you don’t go on.

Well, I believe studying music really has its perks and I don’t think studying as a

criminal psychologist will bring me to where I am today.

竟是從小就接受樂器訓練,那就選音樂吧!藝術是非

常個人化的,沒有對錯之分。藝術表現的形式有許多

種,其中,只有音樂最能感動人心。

今年,很榮幸能在第四台當暑期實習生,了解更多有

關古典音樂和廣播的知識,實在讓我大開眼界,特別

是現場觀看直播節目和有機會與藝術家見面,包括香

港電台弦樂四重奏和影評人霍華德•埃利亞斯。從他

們身上,我明白更多專業知識。除此以外,我曾修讀

英國文學,也有助我在準備今期《美樂集》中莎士比

亞音樂會的材料。

課餘時,我也教視障及患自閉症的青年人演奏小提琴

和鋼琴。兩年的教學生涯中,讓我明白「施比受更為

有福」的道理是可以透過音樂實踐出來,而犯罪心理

學定必不會塑造出今日的我。
