Digital Control

The FCR (Firing Circuit Replacement) is a TMEIC GEmicroprocessor-based process controller withdedicated I/O system, designed to be the controllerof medium to large complexity SCR (Thyristor)bridges where the need for advanced controlrequirements, high speed response, expandeddiagnostic capability and various interfaces arebeyond the capability of conventional analogcontrol.

Firing Commands, Fast As Light

The fiber optic technology is a great advantage ofthe FCR, where the gating commands do not haveany lag on the sequence and response. UsingElectric-Light conversion technology with FOT (FiberOptic Transmission Board), the firings are sent toa Light-Electric inversion board.

The firing pulses aresent to theLight-Electrictransmission board, which allows the FCRto control multiplebridge converters in 6and 12 pulseconfiguration using 1CPU and up to 24pulse configurationusing 2 CPU’s.

Each fiber optic firing board has its healthy signalsin benefit of maintenance and diagnose.Fiber optic is also immune to electromagneticinterference, a very important feature while workingin high current applications.

Diagnostic Tools

The GE Control System Toolbox is aWindows®-based operator interface program usedto configure, tune, andmonitor FCRís. Its user-friendly interface by using diagrams to view signalflow, sequencing, and regulator control in theFCR, which helps the operator in all levels of setupand operation with password security levels forprotecting the configuration.

Animated block diagrams, and organized menus.

Page 4: Firing Circuit Replacement

Regulation and sequencing is driven by a set ofparameters which can be edited/monitored usingany of three operator-selected methods:

TM drive®-DC FCR Product Guide

• Functionally organized menus block diagramsthat detail the regulators and sequencing function.

• Wizards that guide the user through a completedrive configuration and tune-ups.

• The drive control window which allows the userto control the system from the toolbox, having thelook and feel of the drive diagnostic Interface.

The trend recorder monitors and graphs signalvalues from toolbox and graphs data collectionanalysis (.dca) files. Data can also be saved andexported for other applications, such asspreadsheets like Microsoft Excel.

This application is configured using drag-and-dropto move a variable from the block diagram viewto the trend recorder window which has an intuitiveVCR-style interface for data record and playback.Live data can be sampled and viewed as fast as20 ms.

It uses three methods to collect data:

mode is for low-to-medium-data collection rates, typically used for live monitoring.

Capture Buffer using the trace back data featurewhich trends several preset variables at high speed, during fault events and save them on non volatilememory for its post-analysis.

Data Historian mode for historical data contained*.Dca files. a given trend can display one or multipledata historian files using an innovation seriescontroller, and a personal computer (pc). Theprogram runs in the background as a service onthe pc that is running the windows nt operatingsystem and records the values of any egd or srtpsignal on any ethernet connected to the pc onwhich the program is running.

Trend Recorder

Trace Back Data

If you experience a fault on FCR equipment, Toolboxallows you to view Fault History and TracebackData. This feature is capable to collect up to 8events, and several selected variables at speedsup to 244 us storing the event on non volatilememory, remaining even while powering downthe equipment. It also eliminates the need of using an oscilloscope during the failure solution, because

it is able todisplay theinformation ofthese variablesinrecorderwindow.

Remote Diagnostic Support

AMI GE offers the remote support option, where

the distance monitoring is possible using either an

internet connection, or telephone links to control

the installed equipments through the maintenance

pc and customers network. This feature reduces

the time of diagnose and usually the equipments

are put back in service faster.

Adaptability

FCR is 100% compatible with the Canadian GeneralElectric Indoor DC rectifier, and matches with severalDC power bridges where AMI GE offers differentoptions of replacement depending on theapplication and customer needs.

The FCR is provided with fast connectors (same asexisting) to reduce transition time between existingand new system.

Motors generally can also be reused, unless thenew control scheme requires higher torque orspeed.

Depending on the system, the FCR can becomplemented with a master control for processes,Interlocks and additional I/O either with a PLC orISC (Innovation Series Controller) and user friendlyHMI or COI (Control Operator Interface) screens.

Installation Support

AMI GE used to provide all the necessaryinformation to properly install the suppliedequipment. This information includes, single-linediagrams, hardware prints, installation manuals, installation best practices and necessaryenvironmental conditions to ensure trouble freeoperation for many years to come.

Besides, AMI GE offers different options of projects, including:

• Power bridge audits. As an option, the cellsverification is recommended to ensure the reliabilityand good conditions of the rectifier.

• Snubbers and fuses status verification. Theprotection devices revision is an additional

*Terms and Conditions should be discussed inagreement.

The rectifiers supplied before the 80’s use old-fashion analog technology, which used to bereliable, but nowadays productivity and qualityrequirements on manufacturing processes requirean urgent upgrade, to keep being competitive onthe market

Upgrade could become expensive regardingequipment, and installation requirements, but thereplacement can be selective, reusing the existing

service to help preventing from futuremalfunctioning on the cells.

power rectifiers and devices in good conditionswhich most of the time, represents the biggest partof the investment cost.

The FCR is an AMI GE product, offered to solve theneeds of upgrade, which otherwise, would representa huge and sometimes, not really needed biginvestment. The FCR is designed to substitute analoggating control of SCR is with new digital circuitry, obtaining with it, ultimate generation diagnostictools.

Electric Arc Furnace

An Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) is a furnace that heatscharged material by means of an electric arc.EAF range in size from small units of approximatelyone ton capacity up to about 400 ton units.Electric arc furnace differs from induction furnacesin that the charge material is directly exposed tothe electric arc, and the current in the furnaceterminals passes through the charged material. For steelmaking, direct current (DC) arc furnacesare used, with a single electrode in the roof andthe current return through a conductive bottomlining or conductive pins in the base. The advantageof DC is lower electrode consumption per ton ofsteel produced, since only one electrode is used,as well as less electrical harmonics and other similarproblems.

DC Machines are still used nowadays on shippropulsion, where usually 3 or more dieselgenerators, are used to supply medium voltagepower to Isolation transformers, which feed 12pulses non-regenerative SCR power bridges.

Ship Propulsion

Rolling Or Break Down Mill

A Rolling Mill is a machine or factory for shapingmetal by passing it between a pair of work rolls.rolling mills are often incorporated into integratedsteelworks, but also exist as separate plants andcan be used for other metals, and other materials.depending on the temperature of the metal beingrolled, rolling mills are typically hot or cold rollingmills.

These converters are used to control up to severalmegawatts DC motors, giving the main propulsion(port or starboard) or the turn side propulsion.
