PG&E Hunters Point Power Plant Cleanup Progress Continues

The following activities are in progress or will take place in October 2010 in areas a, J, C and d (see map, right).

• Excavation of contaminated soil using an excavator – areas will be fenced for Site safety

• Placing excavated soil into stockpiles (which are then covered until they can be transferred into trucks) or directly into trucks (which are then covered before they leave the site)

• Sampling and analyzing excavation areas to confirm that all soil above cleanup levels has been removed

• Sampling and analyzing excavated soil to characterize for disposal

• Implementation of odor control measures, as needed, by applying an odor suppressant in water

• Loading of stockpiled crushed concrete and asphalt on trucks for transport to a recycling facility

• Relocation of underground utilities

Air Monitoring and Dust Control MeasuresPG&E has a robust air monitoring and dust control program that has been in place since the dismantlement work began in 2007. It has been effective in maintaining safe conditions at and around the Site and meeting all regulatory requirements. The program’s precautionary safety measures include:

• Perimeter air-monitoring using state-of-the-art equipment

• Spraying of water and soil stabilizer in work areas to suppress dust. This is done using a range of methods including watering trucks, hand-held hoses and misters installed on the fence line

• Washing truck tires before they leave the Site

• Assuring that other vehicles, for example employee and visitor cars, do not enter areas where their tires could come into contact with contaminated soil

• Covering truck loads and soil stockpiles using protective tarps

• Sweeping of adjacent streets

• Lowered on-site speed limit

All air monitoring results are reported to the Cal EPA/Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Data results can be found on both the DTSC and PG&E project websites.

Working In Partnership with the Community

PG&E is working closely with the community during the cleanup effort. On August 31st the project team met with the Hunters Point Power Plant Project Advisory Committee. In response to the committee’s input, project trucks are being labeled as shown in the photo below so they are not confused with trucks on other projects. Trucks working on this project are abiding by strict safety rules, including covering truck loads of excavated soil and traveling at safe speeds.
