Current State of ASABO- the Japan Linen, Ramie & Jute Association
ASABO was re- organized by Teikoku Sen-I Co., Ltd seven years ago and it
brings together 122 companies from the upstream to downstream sectors of the
Asa industry (Asa is a collective name for bast fibers such as linen, jute, ramie &
hemp etc.). The association has been further recognized as “the information
center of Asa” and as “a hub that connects the various businesses in the
industry,” and its power as a unifying force has become even stronger in recent
years. In regards to global cooperation, expectations towards ASABO’s
role in the Japanese market in sustainable growth is getting ever greater
from both the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp (CELC) and the China
Bast and Leaf Fibers Textile Association (CBLFTA).

< Outlook of Linen Market in Japan >
(1) Due to consumer’s declining buying power for clothing, particularly after the Financial crisis
Lehman’ bankruptcy, Tohoku big Earthquake, and due to still continuing of deflation in textile
industry from economic slowdown, domestic apparel market is still contracting.
(2) Under the above mentioned circumstances, Japanese major apparel makers have to reduce
the number of their stores and employees in large scale. Accordingly major department
stores also have to be reorganized recently such as by M & A or closing stores.
(3) Under such current difficult business environment for the apparel companies, only linen
materials are slightly increasing except all other fiber materials.
(4) By government-led power-saving campaign promoting the “Cool Biz” style, and the
universality of asa material and its functionality have been reevaluated, and the use of asa
has spread not only in the apparel industry but in the overall lifestyle goods industry as well.
(5) The import of wet spun linen yarn has been soaring in recent 5 years. Last year it resulted
4% increase from the previous year, amounting to 1512t. However due to above (2) reason,
the amount of this year will go down by about 30%.
