At the end of the coming week Great Lent will be over. Next Saturday is Lazarus Saturday, which is followed by Palm Sun-day, the Entry of our Lord into Jerusalem, and then by Passion Week. However, today we com-

memorate another entry into Jerusalem, not the Entry into Jerusalem of our Lord, but the entry into Jerusalem of Mary of Egypt. Who was she and what is her significance today? Born in Alexandria in Egypt in the middle of the fifth century, as a young girl Mary fell into the vice of prostitution. For seventeen years, from the age of 12 until the age of 29, she lived the life of a harlot. How-ever, once finding herself in Jerusalem, out of curiosity, she went to see the Precious Cross of Christ. She found that she was unable to enter the church where St Helen had placed the Cross, for some invisible force prevented her from entering in. So frightened was she at this that she asked the Mother of God through an icon at the entrance to the church, why this was. The Mother of God replied to her that Mary first needed to repent and obey her. On-ly after promising to do this was Mary al-lowed to enter the church in Jerusalem. After then entering and venerating the Cross, Mary heard the Mother of God telling her: 'If you cross the Jordan, you will find true peace'. So shaken was Mary by these events that she did indeed forsake all her old life and, having taken communion, she crossed the Jordan, and went to live there in the desert. We do not know the exact details of her day-to-day life, but we do know that she dwelt there as a her-mitess, eating plants, living in torments and struggle with passionate thoughts, and eventu-ally obtaining the grace to work miracles, crossing the Jordan as if on dry land. She lived naked and became withered and emaci-ated, as we can see in the icon of her, but nev-ertheless she survived there for some forty-eight years. Then she was discovered by a pious monk, Zosimas, who is portrayed in the icon together with her. It was to him that she related her life which we have today. The Life of St Mary teaches us many things. Perhaps the first and most obvious les-son we can learn from her is that we should never judge, never pre-judge. Who will be

saved? It is impossible to answer this ques-tion, for it is never too late to repent, even for us. Humanly speaking, when we consider the life of Mary until her twenty-ninth year, we might think that salvation had become impos-sible for her. And yet the service to her calls her 'the greatest of saints'. Humanly speaking, we are condemned; but by the grace of God everything, including the height of repent-ance, is possible. No man has the right to judge another. The Life of St Mary of Egypt also teaches us something about human nature. In each of us there is the desire for worldly pleasures, for amusement and entertainment, for food and drink, for the pleasures of the senses. But there is also the desire for pleas-ures of a higher sort, pleasures that are lasting, which we may call joys. Those joys are so much higher than the fleeting pleasures of the senses that they alone constitute the path to lasting happiness. Societies which are devoted only to the satisfaction of the pleasures of the senses, pleasure-seeking societies, are socie-ties without lasting joys, they are full of sad faces. The Life of St Mary teaches us that the values of the Church are quite different from those of the world. She went out into the desert and had nothing, no friends, no home, no possessions, no clothes and hardly any food and drink. The world looked for pleas-ure, the satisfaction of the senses, money and power, but St Mary was moneyless and pow-erless in the world. Today's Gospel confirms the choice of St Mary, for it says that those who wish to be great must be servants. This is upside down from all the ways of this world. But our Lord preached this and like Him St Mary lived this. Indeed, as we have already said, the Church calls St Mary 'the greatest of saints'. The use of this word 'great' may surprise. In everyday life, we use 'great' in other meanings. The world speaks of 'great politicians', 'great sol-diers', great film-stars', 'great performances by sportsmen', 'a great holiday', 'a great car', 'a great amount of money'. But the Church calls St Mary 'great' and a thousand and a half years after she lived we ask for her prayers, but not for those of any politician or soldier or film-star or sportsman. Let us think more carefully before next we utter this word 'great'. Holy Mother Mary, pray to God for us!

BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemp-tion. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

And James and John, the sons of Zebe-dee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be bap-tized with the baptism with which I am bap-tized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am bap-tized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but who-ever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. Τόν συνάναρχον Λόγον Πατρί καί Πνεύματι, τόν ἐκ Παρθένου τεχθέντα εἰς σωτηρίαν ἡμῶν, ἀνυμνήσωμεν πιστοί καί προσκυνήσωμεν· ὅτι ηὐδόκησε σαρκί, ἀνελθεῖν ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ καί θάνατον ὑπομεῖναι, καί ἐγεῖραι τούς τεθνεῶτας, ἐν τῇ ἐνδόξῳ Ἀναστάσει αὐτοῦ.

The Word who with the Father and Spirit is co-beginningless, the one born from a Virgin for our salvation, let us praise and worship we the faithfull; for he was pleased to ascend in the flesh upon the Cross, and death for us to endure, and raise all the departed, in his Resurrection glorious.

Commemorating Mary of Egypt

Ἐν σοί Μῆτερ ἀκριβῶς διεσώθη τό κατ' εἰκό-να, λαβοῦσα γάρ τόν σταυρόν, ἠκολούθησας τῷ Χριστῷ, καί πράτ-τουσα ἐδίδασκες, ὑπερορᾶν μέν σαρκός, παρέρχεται γάρ· ἐπιμελεῖσθαι δέ ψυχῆς, πράγματος ἀθανάτου· διό καί μετά Ἀγγέλων συναγάλλεται, ὁσία Μαρία τό πνεῦμά σου.

The image of God, was faithfully preserved in you, O Mother. For you took up the Cross and followed Christ. By Your actions you taught us to look be-yond the flesh for it passes, rather to be concerned about the soul which is immor-tal. Wherefore, O Holy Mary, your soul rejoic-es with the angels.

Apolytikion of the Church

Σήμερον τῆς σωτηρίας ἡμῶν τό κεφάλαιον, καί τοῦ ἀπ' αἰῶνος μυ-στηρίου ἡ φανέρωσις ὁ υἱός τοῦ Θεοῦ, υἱός τῆς Παρθένου γίνεται, καί Γαβριήλ τήν χάριν εὐαγγελίζεται. Διό καί ἡμεῖς σύν αὐτῷ, τῇ Θε-οτόκῳ βοήσωμεν· Χαῖρε Κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ Κύριος μετά σοῦ.

To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel an-nounceth the good tid-ings of grace. Where-fore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail ! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee.

St. Mary of Egypt Lenten Food Drive

As Christians, we are called to serve others where there is

truly hurt and need. All students will encounter a friendly

“competition” during the Lenten Season as they help our

St. Mary of Egypt Food Bank. The youth will be asked to

bring non-perishable food donations to their receptive

classrooms during this time. The class collecting the most

items has a celebratory lunch with Father Dean and to

“house” the St. Mary of Egypt Food Drive Traveling Icon in

their classroom for the following year.

Confession “If God forgives us for our sins, why do we need

the Sacrament of Confession?”

Confession is a Holy Mystery (Sacrament) that helps us in our path of

repentance and reconciliation with God. It is a Sacrament by which we re-

ceive God’s grace for our healing and reunion with Him.

Of course, God is ready to forgive us every time we turn to Him in sincere repentance and ask for His mercy. In

fact, every day we should turn to God, asking for his forgiveness for our countless daily sins.

Many times, however, we don’t even know or understand our own sins. We also too easily dismiss our sins without

sincerely repenting. This is where the Sacrament of Confession helps.

In Holy Confession, we confess to Christ Himself, represented by an icon of Christ, and with a priest present, who

is a witness to our confession. It is often quite difficult to acknowledge the totality of our sins, so the priest is there

as a spiritual doctor, helping us see our own true self. In fact, many people are totally blind to their sins and can’t

fathom the ugly roots of evil deep within ourselves. Thus, by the grace of God, the priest, helps us see and under-

stand our sins, and then guides us to healing and change, all under the sacramental grace of the Church.

The Sacrament of Confession is a

spiritual tool which, when used properly, can lead us into a deeper understanding of ourselves, into a state of sin-

cere repentance, and into a fuller union with God.

Why don’t you try to go to Confession during this season of Great Lent!

The memorial service may be offered at the conclusion of any of regular worship service including the Sunday Divine Liturgy. Memorial services are not offered on the feast days of the Lord and the Theotokos, and the period between Saturday of Lazarus and the Sunday of Thomas. In order to offer a memorial service, one needs to contact the parish office and submit the date and the names of the ones to be commemorated. A Trisagion is a brief prayer which is read for our be-loved departed. The Names are Commemorated at the Altar during the celebration of each Divine Liturgy, names of the living and the dead are com-memorated. Therefore your names must be in the altar prior to 9:30 a.m. If you are late your names will not be read. Please contact the church office 216-861-0116 if you have a Memorial or a Trisagion. It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the child the necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ. If by chance we accidentally miss someone's nameday, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating April Namedays and beseech our
