    Creative Workshop Idea 1

Controlling Nature One of the ideas that I came up with

during the creative work shop was todo with our control over nature.

I thought I could capture this by takingphotos of things like potted plants.

This is a clear representation ofmankind controlling the growth andalso positioning of nature.

I feel that things like the Bonsai treewould be the best example due to thefact that it is controlled to grow smallerthrough root wiring and cutting shoots.

Wasted Spaces Another idea I came up with

was to look at wasted spaces.

This came into my head due tothe fact I was thinking aboutwasted space in the newhouse I have moved into.

The two photos I have takenare of small rooms that are partof the house which dont getused and have been left to fallinto disrepair.

    Creative Workshop idea 3

Facial Structure I had the idea to try and compare facialfeatures and how they change from person toperson.

I would do this simply by photographingpeoples faces and either comparing them sideby side or I was also considering layering themup.

This layering effect would help to bring out anysimilarities or differences between the facesbut would take many faces to get a goodoutcome.

This in some ways links back to the idea ofpsychology. This is the practise which believedthat you could tell by a persons facial figures alot about their character and has been usedmany times throughout history to be able tobring "criminals" to justice. This practise hasnow been discredited.

    Creative Workshop Idea 4

Brick-a-brack I wouldn't class myself as a hoarderbut I do have a collection of what Iknow as Brick-a-brack.

I wondered if when they were taken outof their environment whether theywould be able to help represent myselfin any way.

I also wondered how the objects wouldbe received once taken out of theirenvironment.

This would also apply to other peopleand i was curious to see if the objectsthat could be found in a persons roomwould be able to represent the personthat they came from.

    Creative Workshop Idea 5

Sleep This was the final idea I decided to explore. I wanted to find an interesting way to express

sleep without the use of photographingsomeone sleeping in bed.

I felt a good way of doing this would be tophotograph the bed after the person has sleptin it.

I feel this captures a lot of movement and alsoit is clear enough to work out that the sheetsare in the positions that they are due to the fact

that the bed has been used. I feel that this idea links in with the concept

behind Tracey Emins bed. This was a piecewhere she created an installation which washer used bed after she had been bedriddenfor several days.

    Development

I decided to follow on from the creativity workshop by selecting oneof the subjects to continue.

I chose to continue with the controlling nature idea.

I chose this idea because I am interested in the concept behindour obsession to try and control the growth and spread of nature.

I also wanted to explore still life photography as it isn't somethingthat I have experimented with much and feel it would be useful toexpand my portfolio.

    Toms Saraceno

Cloud CitiesI saw this piece when on a collegetrip to Berlin, it was in the HambergerBahnhof gallery. This installationconsisted of a number of inflated

globes suspended by cables. theywere designed to highlight politicaland social restrictions. Due to themini eco systems he produced withplant life living in and around theglobes I feel that this work has a link

to what I am talking about in thisexperiment, especially the ones withthe plants in due to the fact that theyare trapped within the bubble andevery they need to survive is verycarefully controlled.

    Bill Finger

PreviouslyBill Finger is a photographerwho works creating miniaturesets and photographing them.

His work is very realistic andthey are made to look like filmsets also including miniaturepeople which makes the setsseem more realistic. Although Iam not planning on myminiatures being realistic I reallylike the way his sets haveworked out and I will be taking alot of inspiration from them.

    Akiko Ida & Pierre Javelle

MinimiamAkiko Ida and Pierre Javellecreated a series calledminimiam, this series like that ofKurt Moses shows a number ofdifferent situations whereminiatures are interacting withlife sized objects. The mostfamous of these images depict

the miniatures interacting withdifferent foods. These have thesort of comedic side that I amhoping to get in my images.

    Gayle Chong Kwan

Paris RemainsGayle Chong Kwan is aphotographer who has created anumber of pieces involvingminiatures, one I find particularlyinteresting is titled ParisRemains. This depicts what looklike the ruins of old buildings. When looking deeper into theimage you see that these ruins

are actually made of food. I findthis photographs particularlyinteresting as they manage to becaptivating whilst at the sametime quite playful.

    Test Shoot

MiniaturesTo extend my testing I decided to combine the idea when itcame to the Bonsai trees with the artist research that I have

    done.

It is at this point that I can see a strong concept beginning toform. My work will be looking at our constant need to controlnature, this will be represented by the Bonsai trees. To show

the human interference, the scale and also to add a moreinteresting aspect I will be using miniature people within the

images like you would see on a model train set. The use of theminiatures will also put a playful twist which will help draw the

viewer in and keep them invested in the work.

Final Outcome I am going to experiment more with using the miniatures in

proportion to real trees and their leaves etc. This will again play withthe scale and also these images could work well when put with theimages with the bonsai trees.

I am also going to contact Kew gardens to see if it is possible for myto photograph the Bonsai trees with the miniatures. As when I wentto take my test photos they said they try to accommodate forstudents when it comes to work due to it not being commercial.

By the end of this project I am aiming to have between three andfive large prints that are backed and not framed. The reason I havechosen to display them without frames is because I feel that framescause the images to feel more serious where as I am trying to makethis series more fun and playful.
