1999 Climate Specialty Group Newsletter FROM THE CHAIR A few days ago, while pondering what to say to you by way of introduction, it struck me how lucky we are to be active researchers and educators working in climatology at this particular moment in time. It wasn’t that long ago (a few decades at the most) when climatology was the province of a relatively small group of dedicated scientists. But in a very short period, climatology has become one of the most important fields in all of science. It is rare to pick up any weekly issue of Science or Nature that does not have at least one climate‐related topic, while GRL and JGR are filled with research that is directly or indirectly climate related. Of course, all of the traditional climatology journals seem to be flourishing. And, strange as it may seem, our global climate may very well be one of the major campaign issues in the 2000 presidential election. Predicting whether our discipline will remain this vital over the next 20 years is no easier than predicting the climate itself. Nevertheless, the work we are now doing— whether it be climate research, teaching undergraduates, mentoring graduate students, editing journals, or serving on national and international committees— will have a profound impact on our discipline. The reports below, from around 20 Colleges and Universities in the United States, provide a snapshot of the vibrancy of our field. Please take a few minutes to read the "News from Departments" to learn about the variety and relevance of our contributions toward understanding climate. Since being elected Chair of the Climate Specialty Group in Boston last March, I have bothered our past Chair, David Robinson, on at least a weekly basis (probably to the point that it would have been easier for him to remain in office!). He has helped immeasurably to make this transition exceptionally smooth. I also want to thank our other outgoing officers, Secretary/Treasurer Mark Anderson and Linda Mearns for their leadership in the CSG. Special thanks must be extended to the 1998 Honors Committee, which was chaired by good friend and colleague Adam Burnett and his fellow judges: James Voogt, Tony Vega, Barry Keim. Barry has been kind enough to take over as Chair of this committee. I often see members of this committee rushing from room to room to evaluate student talks as I sit comfortably in the lobby bar. They are a very dedicated and conscientious group. After some minimal prodding, Johan Feddema resurrected the CSG home page to his new home in our nation’s heartland and has kindly agreed to maintain the page. Finally, I want to thank Lynda Dunnivan from the UVa Environmental Sciences Department for her invaluable assistance in assembling this newsletter. I know that a few of the faces who we’ve gotten used to seeing on a yearly basis will be missing from Hawai’i for a variety of reasons, so I’ll look forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh in 2000 (as the new millenium approaches). For the rest of you, all I can say is ALOHA and BOOK ‘EM, DANO!
