Sacabo div ides her t ime between New Orleans and Mexico. Both places inform her work ,

result ing in imagery that is as dreaml ike, surreal , and romant ic as the places that she

ca l ls home.

Born in Laredo, Texas , in 1944, she was educated at Bard Col lege in New York . Pr ior to

coming to New Orleans , Sacabo l ived and worked extens ively in France and England. Her

ear l ier work was in the photo- journal ist ic t radit ion and inf luenced by Robert Frank, Josef

Koudelka , and Henr i Cart ier-Bresson. She now works in a very subject ive, introspect ive

sty le, us ing poetry as the genesis for her work . Sacabo’s many portfo l ios are v isual

manifestat ions of the wr i tten word, and she l ists poets as her most important inf luences ,

inc luding Ri lke, Baudela i re, Pedro Sal inas , Vicente Huidobro, Juan Rul fo, Mal larmé, and Sor

Juana Inés de la Cruz . Her images transfer the v iewer into a wor ld of constructed beauty.

Dur ing her 36 year career her work has been featured in over 40 gal lery and museum

exhibit ions in the U.S . , Europe and Mexico. She has been the recip ient of mult ip le awards

and is inc luded in the permanent col lect ions of the George Eastman House, New Orleans

Museum of Art , the Internat ional Center of Photography, the Metropol i tan Museum of Art

and la Bib l iothéque Nat ionale, Par is , France.

Photographer Josephine Sacabo sees i t as a k ind of ‘cont inuity ’ in the h istory of a part icular p lace – a cont inuum that a l lows for an explorat ion of t ime and space in a l l d i rect ions . Over the years Sacabo, who started out as a photojournal ist , has wandered into powerfu l p laces to evoke sad, sweet , fearsome, beaut i fu l impress ions of l i fe . Ghost towns and cathedrals are transformed through technique and imaginat ion into otherwor ld ly venues .

‘Aesthet ica l ly, I am drawn to a p lace,’ she says . ‘ I want to inc lude that wor ld [ in my photographs] , but in a very subject ive, internal way. I love places where a lot has happened; that have the r ich reverberat ion of other t imes. When I am in a p lace that feels l ike that , that is where I photograph.’

Sacabo’s subject ive, introverted work has been v iewed in gal ler ies and museums across America and Europe, and has turned up in a number of internat ional art publ icat ions .

The edgy area between dreams and real i ty is the zone in which her most current work exists . The dark and state ly beauty of her images leave much unsaid ; in shades of subt lety, Sacabo speaks .”
