GREETINGS FROM GH N TO CHRISTIAN FRIENDS:SNAKEHANDLING IN CHURCH

Now that I ve got your attention I want to explain what this art icle is allabout. Most of you have heard of certain churches in America where handlingpoisonous snakes is part of the worship service. These churches believe that i fyou are truly annointed with the Holy Spiri t , you can drink poison or handledeadly snakes and no harm will come to you. Fortunately, we who are members oft he Ch ris ti an churches/churches of Christ do not use th i s pract ice as a cotnnandfrom God in the Scriptures .

So why am I writ ing about snakes in church?Because in Ghana t i s not an uncomnon pract ice for snakes to come to church, whether they are invited or not. nd usually they aren t .) This was the situation I found myself in las t week as I was preparing to preach to a church in th evillage of Ofankor. The people were arriving and one of the drunmers suddenlystopped his drumming. I was si t t ing to his immediate lef t at the front of theroom which was very small. The room was approximately ten feet square made outof mud with a corrugated t in roof and a dir t floor. When he stopped abruptly

everyone looked up to see what had caused the interruption. As you probably haveguessed, i t was a snake.Needles to say, th is was a new experience for me. The way people clearedout of that room you would have thought I had just announced that I was going topreach a 5-hour sermon. Not withstanding, I wasn t the l a s t one out- I t becameimmediately clear , however, that i f we were going to have church, and not loseface in the sigttof the vil lagers , we would have to excorrmunicate the snake. Whilemy Ghanian friends were pondering th is problem, I has t i ly made my way to th e tru ck ,which caused much laughter among the church members. But I immediately returned, armed with a three and one-half foot long iron rod that I use to turn the jack onmy truck. Of course, I stayed around in the background to give encouragement and

moral support .In less than two minutes we I say we because I don t want to take a ll ofthe credi t , and succeeded in relieving the snake of his body. Al l then proceededaccording to plan. After i t was over with, I kept thinking to myself, There must

be a sermon i l l u s t r a t i o n in here somewhere . The obvious l esson was t h a t wea l l work together, with a common goal in mind, and against a common enemy wewill accomplish our task more easily and much quicker. We won t have time tocomplain or cri t ic ize and there will be fewer snakes l e f t to bother us. That show we h and l ed th e snake a t Ofanko r .

Oh, in case you were wondering, t was a cobra.ARTICLE

We are now into the l a s t part of the f i r s t term of 1986 school year andeverything continues to run more or less smoothly. Last year we had a big devalua t ion and the cedi went from 60:1 U.S. dollar a l l the way to 90:1, a f i f typercent devaluation. All the essential commodities have followed accordingly. There i s ta lk of another devaluat ion to 120:1, but t ha t i s j u s t a rumor. Whenwe arriv ed in Ghana two years ago the cedi was 30:1. The financial planners ofGhana are trying to bring about an economic recovery, but the process is dif f ic u l t and s l ow .
