Velkommen Fysikermøtet i Tromsø 2017

Welcome to the Physicist Meeting in Tromsø 2017 The Norwegian Physicist Meeting is organized every 2nd year by the Physics Departments at the larger Universities in Norway in collaboration with the Norwegian Physical Society. In 2017, the meeting is organized in Tromsø at Department of Physics and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway. We wish you all welcome to a fruitful and memorable meeting, focused on exciting plenary talks, parallel sessions, debates and enjoyable social events together with other physicists. The format of the meeting is in particular suitable for master- and Ph.D. students to presents some of their first talks and posters to a physicist audience, and to get introduced to physicists from other universities and work places in Norway.

It is of great importance to strengthen the cross-field contact between physicist, and the Physicist Meeting is a perfect arena for that!

Find your way around.

The meeting will take place in the Technology building (Teknologibygget, TB) and in the Pharmasy Building (Farmasibygget, PB) on the main University Campus. The Technolgy building is the home of the Department of Physics and Technolgy and the Department of Engineering and Safety. It is the most recent building on campus and we transferred here during fall 2014. The Pharmasy building is in close vicinity to TB and is also one of the most recent buildings on campus. We are using their Auditorium Tabletten (The Pill), room F 1.101, and outside the auditorium there is a nice area for posters and coffee breaks. The parallel sessions Monday will take place in TB Auditoriums at 2nd and 1st floors, and the plenary sessions will take place in the PB Auditorium Tabletten. Lunch will be served in the cantina in Teorifagsbygget Hus 1. You can get an overview impression of the different locations from this overview, or search the map on https://uit.no/campustromso

Information for presenters

Instructions for talks:

Your time slot includes time for questions (2–5 min, depending on your total time). Please keep the talk within your allowed time slot!

Make sure that your talk works on a Windows computer, before you arrive. In particular, please check that movie files are embedded in the presentation. Some details about the AV equipment can be found here

We greatly encourage you to bring an USB stick and have your talk copied to the AV-computer in the room at least 1–2 breaks prior to your talk. Especially in the parallel sessions with short talks, this will speed up the transfer significantly. For those of you who start Monday (parallel sessions in particular), we encourage you to send your file by email to [email protected] or upload it to a Dropbox account that will be shared with you by email.

In the parallel sessions rooms and the plenary auditorium Tabletten we will assign persons to help with the equipment. For the longer talks, (30 min and up) it is also possible to bring your own computer. HDMI and VGA connectors are provided with the equipment.

Instruction for posters:

The poster boards fit portrait A0 format (210 mm x 297 mm). The poster boards will be provided from Monday around lunch outside Tabletten, and we recommend the posters are mounted already Monday afternoon. Equipment for the mounting will be provided.

Some advise regarding posters (guidelines only, ref. IT Learning Centre):

There are two criteria for text on a poster:

— Text on the poster must be readable from a distance of a metre or so

— Restrict your word count to only a few hundred words. Recommended 600–800.

— Recommended font sizes Titles 72+, Sub-titles 54+, Text 30+,

Sub-text 20+, could be less or larger depending on font type.

Standard sans-serif font such as Arial or Helvetica are generally good for posters.

We will select the best student poster and the best student oral presentation, and we got some nice prizes from Andreas Wahl’s web shop for nerds, so stay put until Wednesday noon to celebrate the winner!

Program.

For the plenary talks we have been lucky to attract two world renown speakers on the topics of astrophysics and astrobiology, as well as excellent speakers nominated by the groups of the Norwegian Physical Society and Department of Physics and Technology. The talks presented by the UiT groups cover space physics, nano-optics, sensors and energy and climate physics. There will be parallel sessions on a) Condenced Matter and Atomic Physics, b) Subatomic Physics and Astrophysics, c) Biophysics, d) Space, Plasma, and Climate Physics.

The Birkeland year will be observed by a lecture by Dr. Terje Brundtland at the end of the meeting. Stay put for a memorable talk!

Parallel session are organized by the topical groups of the Society.

Condenced Matter and Atomic Physics session (CMAP) starts at 9.00 in Auditorium TB 2.017. Note, this session has a different time for coffee break and earlier lunch than the other. See program details!
