We at your Gran Alacant Advertisercontinue to bring you allof the news from theGran Alacant Councillor,Loreto Cascales, as we havesince May 2005. photo: May 2005

Three more big projects on Gran Alacantgot underway a couple of weeks ago. They are shown on our GA map.

The first PARK is now underway. We willkeep you up to date with its progress, hopefully with pictures. There will be 2 playground areas,

exercise machines, garden, tables, benches, lighting and a viewing area.Trees will help to shield it from theadjacent housing. Soil for the park hasbeen taken from another area of GAwhere the soil is not needed, thereforehelping to keep costs down.

The second project along the edge of elCLOT, where the new pavement, cycle

way, and fencing will gradually evolve.Have you seen the amount of lovely oldtrees being planted there? The trees arefrom an area where (one day) MASA will

build more houses. These trees mightotherwise have had to be thrown away,so they have been moved to a newhome.

Thirdly, the enclosing of the sportscentre, so sporting activities can take

place in the winter and/or from thesummer sun.

The 4km length of pavements and treesthat have now been concluded, havehad the welcome edition of 20 benchesand rubbish bins.

You may remember in an earlier editionthat we had words about a nonconnected drain on Avenida Polonia, which when it rains, leaves a pool ofwater that cannot ever drain away,

Page 5: GA Advertiser nov 2009

TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER” phone: 966 699 167 5

leaving lying stagnant water. The picture

shows the work going on to reconnectedit to the drain system.A more important area of flooding hasbeen the one in front of the Life Resort. You will see in this issue, an emailexplaining the problem there. At time ofwriting this, the problem is beingrectified, which makes it very pleasingfor these long suffering residents. Some other areas on GA, liable toflooding, have also been sorted, to helphopefully solve all of these problems.

The new train will be with us in the nextthree months. Until then, it is hopedthat the present owners will continuethe service.

The Fiesta races (photos in this issue)was a tremendous success. The numberof contestants doubled from last year, with 1,000 adults and children takingpart. A cap had to be put on even moreentrants as there were not enoughvolunteers to cope with all of the extrarunners.Loreto has asked us to appeal to thepeople of Gran Alacant, for helpers withnext years event, so they can make theevent even bigger, if you would like tohelp please contact the council or theorganizers of the event.

Have you seen the new rubbish binsused in some areas of Santa Pola? Therubbish goes into the silver bins anddown below ground to much bigger bins. These are then accessed by lifting upthe silver bin ground floor area andreaching down to pick up the big bin

holding the rubbish. This kind of bin willbe sited in three areas of Gran Alacant. The rubbish situation in Gran Alacantand Santa Pola, as elsewhere in theworld is mostly down to people. Rubbishdumped in the roads, dumped by thebins, not in them, and so on. On GA italmost needs a continual collection, Iwould think the Town Hall are damned ifthey do, and damned if they don’t.You will see an email in this issueshowing the same problem exists inSanta Pola. If the bin lorry cannot pickup all of the excess rubbish lying aroundthe bins, men have to follow on, pickingup all of the extra rubbish. The cost ofthese Lorries is all included in taxes wepay so there is no extra cost.People are asked where possible to tryto tip their rubbish after 9pm to avoidsmelly bins. This is more important inthe summer. This time of year residentsshould not be fined for dumping refuseduring the early evenings.Suggestions have been made for agreen area dumping ground in one placeon GA .this has already been tried in onearea, but, yes, you’ve guessed it, thearea was littered with fridges, mattresses and all sorts of otherrubbish, therefore knocking yet anotheridea on the head.

Down by the beach road there is a busstop where, in times of darkness, it isquite frightening for people to standaround waiting for a bus. This section ofroad comes under the Elche Town Hall,so the only way to get lighting there is tobring it to the attention of Elche TownCouncil.

Gran Alacants new football team needyour help. The team have been pitchedinto a very high standard league andwould welcome any new players. Cometo the games and support them. In theirlast game, 5 of the 10 players wereSpanish, so everyone will be madewelcome

Santa Pola C.F. - sexy footballby Kevin RendellWhen I last left you a couple of games intothe new campaign Santa Pola sat pretty, since then however, things have improvedsignificantly. Following aroutine win at home toPinoso, ʻPola travelledto Alicante to take onHercules B and grabbedall three points with a0-1 score-line and theirfirst away win. Evenbetter was soon tofollow as Aspe slinkedhome with their tailsbetween their legsfollowing a 4-0 drubbingat the hands of a SantaPola side who weresimply irresistible on theday. A toughlooking away matchagainst a decent Alone de Guardamar also

posed noproblems as theMarineros racedinto a three-nilhalf time leadthey neverrelinquished.Next up, a homegame againstAltea didnʼt goquite to plan, asluggish lookingSanta Polaconceded firstwith an own goalby Tari who latermade amendswith the equalizerfor a share of thepoints and a1-1 draw.

At the time of writing, Santa Pola sit third inthe divisional table and still await their first

SantaPola

Football Club

defeat, along the way they have racked uptwelve goals and only conceded two.Confidence oozes through a side whohave definitely learnt how to battle for apoint when not at their best. On the downside injuries to key defenders Miguel andVicente together with a broken foot forwinger Jose Fran Molina may yet provecrucial. Weʼre also entering the periodwhen the accumulation of bookings andred cards may compel coach DomingoGrau to shuffle his pack. Just to clarify, five

yellow cards andone red equate to aone game suspen-sion with a straightred card, forwhatever reason, meaning twogames with a freeSunday.

During November,Santa Polaentertain Polop andBenissa at homeand travel to awaygames atMutxamel, OrihuelaB and Javea. On

current form not very much toalarm our local side but of

course every unbeaten run must, at somepoint, come to an end.

You can find posters for our next games atShamu, The Phoenix, Dick Turpins,Churchillʼs, JPʼs Sports Bar andFlannagans. In addition, a large number ofGran Alacant residents have come alongand been pleasantly surprised andimpressed by the standard of Preferentefootball, you are all assured a very warmwelcome so why not join them?

These are the main ways our govenments extract money from us….but we make it so easy for the government to take our money! taxationunfortunately comes to us in many forms….national insurance....incometax....capital gains tax....vat....stamp duty....tourist and departure taxes....inheritance tax, the final “departure” tax!!!Can we avoid tax?…………well we can at least reduce what we payLet me quickly highlight where we might be able to point you in the right

direction.VAT - if anyone knows how to avoid it let me know!Similarly with national insurance, stamp duty and capital gains tax, incidently, nationalinsurance for the self employed in Spain is approaching 300 euros each month!Income tax…..You may remember in the UK struggling with an inland revenue tax return…….. only to befined if you could not complete it on time? Not surprisingly, it is the same in Spain, income tax works in a similar fashion -.…..bandings and rates but the fines are morepunitive!! If you struggled in the uk imagine the problems here….please use an accountantas they are very low cost in Spain. With capital gains tax avoiding it is an nigh onimpossible. It is a nightmare to understand in English……try doing it in Spanish!….please use anaccountant, but –As independent financial advisors, we can help you reduce the effects of income tax andinheritance tax. With income tax our main thrust is to help you avoid tax on your savings. It is impossible -without fraud- to avoid taxation of day to day earned income. Many of youwill be aware that the E.U. saving tax directive has been in place a few years now andthe aim of this legilsation is to raise revenue throughout the E.U. by one of two methods;one….make it less attractive to hide cash undeclared in offshore bankstwo…. punitively tax bank account balances. If an E.U. resident does not declare theircash, the way they intend to do this, is by witholding tax, rising over recent years to 35%the tax will be applied to all interest earned on offshore bank accounts for most people,35% is a far higher rate of tax than would be paid by declaring bank balances! The taxman is encouraging declarations of interest earned! With careful financial planning, we canavoid most of the effects of this legislation. We use a range of long established financialinstitutions to wrap our clients bank accounts in what is commonly called a personalinvestment portfolio. These portfolios are a cost affective way of managing all of yourinvested assets…cash, shares …. and so on. Gains are free of income and capital gainstaxes. The key is that the new E.U. witholding tax is on cash in bank accounts it does notapply to cash in portfolios……..an elegant maneovre to avoid income tax on assets. If I could now move on to inheritance tax. This is a very difficult topic to even try to outlinein a short article. Here are a number of important points to remember;Spanish inheritance tax is in many ways more punitive than the uk. In the uk there is nocharge for transfers between spouses, whatever the value of a deceased personʼsestate…..In Spain there is a charge to inheritance tax between spouses. Many of you mayown your own home in Spain. It is vital to recognise that here we own 50% of the houseeach….It is not jointly owned as is typical of the UK.This means that on the death of a spouse, a person must will theirshare of their assets, including property to a beneficiary, usually thesurviving spouse.

We would be delighted to offer advice on a face to faceindividual basis. Please call or email without [email protected]: 966 795 714 (Local, La Marina)Mobile 616 531 095 (Chris Turton Direct)www.financialadviceinspain.com

Minutes before kick off in the Utd dressing room beforethe recent 4-3 win over rivals Man City, News of the World can

reveal the following was heard…

‘’Right, I want 110% effort from the word go against these city so andso’s. Remember they did us 2-1 on the 50th anniversary of Munich. Ifyou don’t win those cockneys at Chelsea will have 6 points on us……Now, I don’t care if you kick, punch or head butt your way to victory, you MUST win! Good luck!’’

At which point Sir Alex Ferguson walks in and says,

‘’Cheers ref, I’ll take it from here!’’

GRAN ALACANTFOOTBALL CLUBCommunity spirit ...ian robertson .luton ......It was a week when the community came together..on oct 9th was the latest fund raising evening for

Gran Alacant Football Club hosted by Los Belgas at the Carabasicomplex. Not only was the bar packed to the rafters but much needed funds wereraised for our communities football club.Great prizes gifted by Solbuilders ,Los Belgas ,Santa Pola F.C and manyothers in Gran Alacant and the fact that tickets for the prizes were soldnot just at Los Belgas but at Legends as well, gave the whole evening acommunity feel to it.The players have been training hard over the last few weeks as theleague is of a very high standard and although still waiting for our firstvictory, the fact that more players are joining all the time giving us abigger squad meaning our first victory is not far away. The club is still looking for resident players over the age of 30 who areable to train on a tuesday night. Training and games take place in theSanta Pola astro turf stadium behind the local police station.I would also like to welcome the new Spanish players to the club givingthe whole club a community feel about it.Thank you for your continued support for Gran Alacant Football ClubRichard 676779273 or Claire 660339927 or 966695359Luton uk 07877647922Web site: granalacantfc.blogspot.com

What would happen if one of us dies in Spain

Ask yourselves these questions:

1. Would you know who to call in the first place?2. Would they know the Spanish system on funerals?

3. Would they be able to cope with local laws and regulations inSpain?

4. Normally funerals are held within 48hr´s. Would family have timeto get here?

5. Would funds be readily available to cover all costs?6. Could you cope with the above at the time of great stress?

Makes you think, doesnʼt it?If you can not answer even one of these questions positively then

WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS?

A drunk man who smelled like beer sat down on a subway next to apriest. The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, anda half-empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes the man turned to the priest and asked,'Say Father, what causes arthritis?'The priest replied, 'My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, contempt for your fellow man, sleepingaround with prostitutes and lack of a bath.'The drunk muttered in response,'Well, I'll be damned, 'Then returned to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized.'I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you hadarthritis?'The drunk answered, 'I don't have it, Father.I was just reading here that the Pope does.'

What a spectacle in Santa Pola for the 15th running of the DUATHLON. 3km run plus 6km on thebike plus a further 3km run to finish. Over 1,000 contestants took part. The big picture shows on theright, shows the contestants at the end of the first run, turning onto the beach to get their bikes forthe next 6km.Midway through the bike section, a tremendous thunder, rain and wind storm hit the area. Theweather scattered all of the spectators. The finishing time arch, metal barriers and everything nottied down, all blew over, which all added up to a rather frightening few minutes. The contestants, to their credit, carried on to the finish line. The picture, bottom right, shows the organisers laying out the finish line, red carpet, flowers, finishline gantry...............then the storm hit, and blew it all away. Not to be deterred, all was back correctly for the big finish.

Hi everyone, continued from Octobers edition;

Other Complementary Therapies. (please note I do not practice the following therapies)

AcupunctureThis is an ancient Chinese therapy increasingly used in western societies. Acupuncture is

the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at certain points to help relieve pain and improve the bodyʼs own healing mechanisms. The points are on meridians (energy Channels). If there is a blockage in energy then a part of the body connected to that meridian may become weak or ill. The needles are thought to release the blockage andhelp the body to heal itself.

AcupressureThis is the same as Acupuncture but it uses thumbs or knuckles instead of needles. Pressure is applied along the meridians to release the bodyʼs own energy-Chi-to help relieve pain and encourage the body to heal itself. The massage is similar to Shiatsu, but preformed directly onto the skin with a light oil.

Alexander techniqueThe Alexander technique encourages healing and better health through better posture andawareness of how the body is used. It is especially useful for backache and headaches. Itwas developed by an actor called Frederick Mathias Alexander who discovered that improving his posture stopped him losing his voice.

Bowen techniqueThe Bowen technique, developed in Australia by Thomas A Bowen, aims to rebalance thebody holistically using gentle moves on tissue. A Bowen practitioner can feel whether muscles are stressed or tense and use the moves to release this build up. The light rollingmovements stimulate the bodyʼs energy flows. It is not a massage or a manipulation but agentle process that encourages the body to heal itself.

I WILL CONTINUE OTHER COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES IN JANUARY.NEXT MONTH I WILL DISCUSS GIFT IDEAʼS FOR CHRISTMAS.

Dear Sandra & Barry ,once again another great informative G/A advertiser. I just wanted to make a comment on the "GreatConcern the Town Hall" says it has, page 4 ,I certainly agree with its concerns about fly tipping & alsothe irresponsible owners who let their dogs fowl the pavements. But first a comment on the emptyingof rubbish in the skips. The rubbish was originally emptied from the skips during the night so thatmeant any rubbish put in the skips in the mornings say at 08.00hrs was there all day which is obvi-ously a problem .But now the skips are emptied sometime between roughtly between 09.00hrs &12.00hrs .So if you are on your way out in the morning & pop the rubbish in the skip at 08.00hrs itsonly there an hour or two before it is emptied ,that sounds a reasonable time to dispose of the rub-bish.Surely they can update the times to suit the emptying of the skips!!! Also what about anyone leav-ing after their holiday surely they are not expected to leave their rubbish at home till their next visit toSpain?Where can these people deposit their rubbish if they leave before 9pm?Regarding the fly tipping ,i have complained myself to the counsel & through our administration ,whocontacted the counsel, about the flytipping on Calle Chipre & along Calle Malta. But never get any re-sponse to my complaints. If the counsel would take the time to take a look at the wasteland oppositeour properties on Calle Chipre 26 & Calle Malta they might understand why some unconcerned peo-ple from the Pearlas & many from other areas dump their rubbish in this area ( photos attached.)Ihave stopped people when I have seen them & asked them to take the rubbish to the skips only to findthey just go out of sight & dump it in Calle Malta. This land used to be scraped yearly so all the weedsetc were cut to the ground but as you see in the photos some weeds are 5ft high & very unsightly, great to dump rubbish in & not see it !!! I would ask Loreto Cascales to call me & arrange to come &see for her self how disgraceful the area looks .But she will have to watch where she steps!!!! Maybe at your next meeting you can mention some point I make please & ask Loreto to feel free tocontact me .Regards Bill Winterburn

Rubbish collection in Santa Pola...

As in Gran Alacant we have in Santa Pola large rubbish bins that are emptied daily. We also aroundtown have many recycling bins and some might have seen the new set that is now in operation in frontof Pena Grande on the sea front. The problem here in town is that many people continue to place car-rier bags filled with rubbish on the streets for collection, rather than walking a few yards to put the rub-bish in one of the large bins. It was obviously the way collections were done some years ago andsome people feel that it is their right to continue this practice. My apartment is in the centre of SantaPola and looking down my street in the evening I can see that it is not just the odd one or two bags butsometimes in the summer months as many as 100 bags just thrown out on to the street. I look on toanother apartment block and was shocked last night to see the lady in the 1st floor apartment throwabout 4 or 5 bags out of the window to the street below.

So to my point, we all pay suma and Basura taxes to Santa Pola and each night we pay for a one mantruck to come and empty the large bins, then following that truck we have another truck with 4 or 5men on collecting the bags of rubbish dumped in the streets. Now I say we have a TRUCK...This prob-ably equates to 5 or 6 trucks servicing Santa Pola daily. For a town that we hear is always in the red, should this practice be allowed to continue?

Barry, I mentioned this to you a long time ago and you said that you would put these comments to thecouncillor for Santa Pola! Can you let us know if you did mention this at one of your meetings?

Best regards,

Mark.

USUFRUCT – a Life Time Interest and how it works

So you have heard the word but what does itreally mean? It is important to understandwhat it is and whether or not it would work foryou. As with everything the are pluses andminuses - it depends upon each individualset of circumstances.

It is a useful tool for those in a relationshipwith children from a previous relationshipwhere the parent may wish to leave theirproperty directly to their children, thus protecting their inheritance. Whilst at thesame time allowing their partner/spouse tocontinue to reside in a property until theirdeath.

The usufruct is the right of enjoying a thing, the property of which is actually owned byanother person, and to draw from this all theutilities which it may produce, provided that itis being done without altering the substanceof the thing.

The usufructuary neither can sell the thing(usually property) nor place a lien upon it.The owner of the thing subject to usufructcannot use it.

The right of usufruct is extinguished in the following cases:When the usufructuary dies or acquires theproperty .When the usufruct is repudiated. When the thing subject to usufruct is lost. When the thing is not used within 6 years, ifit is a movable effect, or within 30 years whenit is an estate.

Once the right of usufruct finishes, the inheritor of the bare property can take possession usually upon the death of the person with the usufruct

There exist two kinds of usufructs:

Voluntary usufruct: The parties agree theusufruct in a written contract or a will andLegal usufruct: the law provides it. That is thecase of the usufruct that the surviving spousereceives of the estate's distribution.

These are only general guidelines and notdefinitive statements of the law, there are

SABA Discovery League - Monte Mar Picadors v La Marina Explorers

Monte Mar Picadors – 99 shots - 8 pointsLa Marina Explorers – 95 shots - 6 points

Points are always hard to come by at La Marina, so an overall victory on ‘their turf’ wasvery satisfying, but was it close!

The lead constantly changed hands on eachof the rinks, and the points for the overall shotdifference were only decided at the very end.

Tom Spencer claimed that Harry Dobson’s‘lucky wick’ with his last wood deprived themof a draw for the overall shot result. However,Harry stated that it was a specialist delivery designed to cause the maximum frustration toopponents. It worked! As a result of this specialist delivery, honours

were shared three rinks apiece, but we claimedthe extra two points and overall victory.

Congratulations to Barry, David and Ian’steams for their fine victories, and well done toour other three teams, who despite not winningkept plugging away and secured enough shotsfor victory.

Federation President's Cup – Two Wood TriplesOn Sunday, 18 October, the semi-finals and

final of this competition were played at SanLuis Bowls Club. Monte Mar team of DeniseAshberry, Alan Ashberry and Harry Dobsonplayed against a San Luis triple of Sheila Cox,Ian Young and Mike Cox in one of the semi-finals, and after a thrilling game progressed tothe final. The other semi-final consisted of another San

Luis team of John Haigh, Brian Withers and ValSherry against a San Miguel team of Sheila

Errington, Ian McNamara and Brian Errington with San Miguel progressing to thefinal.

After a very close game, with high qualitybowling on both sides and good sportsmanship, Monte Mar won the Cup forthe second time in three years. The President’s Cup was presented to Denise,

Alan and Harry by Federation President SteveWestall.

Harry thanked the San Luis Bowls Club andJohn Featherstone for organising the competition, and all those connected and involved in the organisation of the competition. This week’s photographs just had to be of our

club’s Chief Wine Taster, Harry Dobson.Apart from his ‘specialist delivery’ that

secured a team victory, as mentioned above,Harry rolled back the years at San Luis, andproved that advancing years are no barrier tobowling success.

Indeed he proved that the opposite can happen, as he put his years of experience intoplay and beat all of the ‘youngsters’ in thePresident’s Cup.

Harry will be celebrating his 80th birthday onBoxing Day, and whilst no current photographs

of events at San Luis have passed my way, theattached photograph was taken at last year’sbirthday celebration when a group of us playedIndalo Bowling Club.

The first photograph shows Harry with his‘guvnor’ Rowena, and the second Harry in action.Well done Harry, many more years of success,

and to Denise and Alan for your great win.Other Club News - Coaching SchoolClub coaching, conducted by Bill Young have

Way back in an earlier edition, we took photographs of our first secret garden. Here it is now. What an effort by these house owners. They cleared a large piece of land, worked hard on it, invested money in it, and, what a credit to them, to transform it into such a wonderful lookingarea. It’s great to see people on Gran Alacant doing all they can, to tidy up their area. This is the second garden, so far, good on um.Petanc competitions were run all afternoon and Spain were beaten in the final by the Britishteam of Gordon Sutherland, Ian & Irene Steele.Winners were presented with prizes donated by Lady Annes Emporium

a reader sent us this poem which we would like to share with you all

GOSSIPSMany think of Florence Nightingale,

that lady with the lamp, many speak of famous people, films, like lady and the tramp.

But not many speak the ring of truth, that surrounds this special world,

just lies, deceit and gossip,as they leave their tongues uncurled.

The sadness and hurt that they pass on,the many hearts they break,

Oh!! gossips of our lovely world, what liberties you take.

Nothing to do, such lonely lives,if they could only guess,

what they say and what they do,puts others in distress.

What is the answer, what can be done,to make them aware of this,

perhaps a gentle healing hug, maybe thatʼs what they miss.

We all say things we shouldnʼt,often thoughtless and unkind,

if only people could think more, not repeating whatʼs on their mind.Letʼs learn lessons from each other,

let no gossip, lies, be spread, say thank you for our lovely life,

pray we sleep peaceful in our beds.Annonymous

WHAT CAN MAKE A DOG OR CAT GET EXTREMELY THIN?

Nowadays is quite uncommon to findabandoned or badly fed pets, so in most cases, when we see an extremely thin (cachectic) dogor cat, the poor body condition is normally associated to a serious disease.

In some cases, the weight loss can bevery quick (less than one month), but what normally occurs is a progressive, chronicalweight loss: we mean, of course, animals whichare having a normal daily quantity of food, anddespite this, they start loosing weight. A totallydifferent case would be the animal which refusessome kind of food according to his own preferences (for example those who only eathuman food, only wet food, not dry one, or onlywhen offered by the owner´s hand). This wouldn’t be a health problem, but an educational/behavioural one. No healthy animalwill starve to death just because he doesn’t likethe food. After 2-3 days the animal will normallyaccept any kind of food, and no weight loss willbe detected.

In case of dogs:-Diabetes. Canine diabetes is a very well

known disease, because it looks exactly the

same than human one. The most important (andcommon) symptoms are eating, drinking and urinating much more than normal, but in somecases a progressive weight loss can be seen, which, at the last stages or when the disease iscompletely out of control, may make the dog bejust skin and bones.

-Cancer. Just like in people, some malignant tumours don’t cause any distress to thedog, and the only thing we can see is a progressive weight loss despite appetite keepsnormal.

-Intestinal parasites. They are normallyassociated with a poor environment and hygiene(abandoned or rescued dogs). In this case, if thereis a very big amount of parasites at the intestine, the dog will look skinny, but the abdomen will lookswollen, and we’ll be able to detect worms in themotions.

-Addison disease. This one consists on ahypofunction of adrenal glands (so, it would be theopposite to Cushing syndrome). It normally pro-duces chronical vomiting and renal failure, and ofcourse, a very important weight loss. This is not avery common disease, but must be taken into ac-count in case of extreme thinness. It’s very easy todetect and treat, but, due to the abnormality of theadrenal glands, if steroids seric levels fall down,

an Addisonian crisis (a kind of coma) will appear, which is an emergency.

-Exocrine pancreas crhonical failure. Exocrine pancreas produces a very important partof the digestive enzymes (remember endocrineone produces insulin) , so, when it fails, the animal will always be hungry, but despite this, hewill get thinner and thinner, because he is unableto absorb the energy which comes from the food. The treatment consists on supplying pancreas enzymes together with the diet.

-Leishmaniosis. As everyone shouldknow now, one of the classical symptoms of themosquito disease is progressive and importantweight loss, but remember a poor coat, diarrhoea, limping, etc, may also be symptoms of this terribledisease.

Apart from these specific diseases, every serious chronical disease may produce aweight loss, but in these cases, the owner normally realizes there is something wrong previous to the weight loss.

In case of cats:-Diabetes and cancer. Same as dogs.-FIV infection (feline AIDS). In case of an

indoor cat, immunosupresion may not show anyremarkable sign, and we only realize the cat is illwhen he starts loosing weight.

-Hyperthyroidism. Cats which suffer thisproblem loose a lot of weight (over 30%), are always hungry, and very active, which makes the

owner think that the cat is not ill, just “nervous”,because the appetite is OK, and normally startsworrying when the cat gets too skinny.

-Kidney failure. It’s a very commonprocess is old cats (over 10 years). The commonsigns are an increased quantity of urine, and drinking more than normal. In case of cats, because sometimes kidney failure may be associated with high blood pressure, nose bleeding may be reported.

All these feline and canine diseases normally have a long evolution, and are normallyshowing at the first stages signs and symptomswhich normally don’t make the owner worry, because the appetite is still OK (or even increased), and he takes the pet to the Vet whenthe weight loss is very important. In order to startan early treatment, regular weight control is a veryuseful tool for detecting abnormalities at their firststages.

Anyway, in domestic feline and caninepopulation, the most common problem is the opposite: overweight. It’s sad, because obesity isa disease caused, in most cases, by the owner byoverfeeding the animal. Fat dogs and cats are nothappy.

WWHHAATT’’SS TTHHAATT IINN TTHHEE CCLLOOTT?? by Mark Etheridge

Marvellous things, helicopters. They flyup, down, sideways and backwards without any bother at all,and I should know – I commute to workin one.Now before you all start writing begging letters on the assumption thatI must be a multi-millionaire, I shouldhasten to add that I share my helicopter with 18 other glum souls, weare all being transported out to thegrim and grey North Sea oil rigs for twoor three weeks of toil and tedium. Theonly good thing about that is that itmakes Spain so much nicer to visit inbetween these offshore trips.Leonardo da Vinci, who as you mayknow actually drew the first design fora helicopter and was interested in absolutely everything that was aroundhim, might have got some of his inspiration from wondering how dragonflies hovered and flew the waythey do. Indeed, one of the first commercially successful helicoptersmade in the UK was known as theWestland Dragonfly. There are 70 or more different speciesof dragonflies and their smaller damselfly relatives to be found inSpain, but two of the commonest andmost easily identified are in the photos. The Red Darter is the bright red one,

species, and the blue one is the Emperor Dragonfly, one of the larger ofthe European dragonfly species – thisphoto was kindly supplied to me byJohn Oliver, another keen wildlife

photographer from Gran Alacant. You can’t have failed to notice over thelast month just how many dragonfliesthere are in and around the Clot, andthat is because they need water forboth living and breeding – some dragonfly larvae may spend up to 2years as an underwater nymph, followed by just 6 weeks as a flyingadult. During this flying time, theystake out a territory and defend itagainst other males, whilst grabbingany passing female to mate with. Thiscauses the peculiar sight you may haveseen where two dragonflies will flyabout locked together, as shown in thephotos. The Red Darter pair fly alongjust above the water, the female dipping her tail just below the surfaceas she lays her eggs; the Emperor pairhold on to a convenient reed while attaching the eggs underwater. You need never fear the dragonfly (Libelula in Spanish); they don’t bite orsting, they are far more interested inseeing off rivals and courting the dragonfly ladies. So you can just watchand appreciate them, while those nastymosquitoes treat you like a mobile selection of tapas.

See you next month.
