Ladies and GentlemenThank you so much for your support of Grief

Encounter this evening. I hope you have a

fabulous evening at this most impressive and

historic of venues.

This very cathedral held a Celebration of Life

Service for my daughter Holly in 2002, when

the events of Soham in the August of that year

came to national attention. Behind the banner

headlines my wife and I found ourselves with

a 12-year-old son, desperate for emotional

assistance and reassurance. A need for a

psychological platform to be able to move

forwards and embrace a future in the right

way was evident. But how to structure and

begin this process was a genuinely confusing

issue to embrace.

At this time, I was contacted by a lady called

Shelley Gilbert who had been working

for many years in preparation to launch a

children’s bereavement charity called Grief

Encounter. Shelley’s workbook and planned

counselling sessions, dealing with children

coming to terms with losing a parent or

sibling, through care and education, really

struck a chord - and my association with Grief

Encounter began in earnest in July 2004.

Occasionally in one’s life you meet people

who’s clarity of vision, ethos and ability to

deliver, inspires you. This has always been the

case for me with the founder and staff at Grief

Encounter. The last 10 years have seen the

charity acknowledged as one of the leading

bereavement charities in the UK with an

exciting development period planned.

This sector of charity work has no

Government support, so events like this allow

us to continue our work in what remains one

of the most challenging of environments.

Best wishes.

Kevin Wells Founding Patron

Grief Encounter

Good evening!Welcome along to the Grief Encounter Charity

Ball, I’m going to use this word a lot tonight but

THANK YOU so much for supporting such a

great cause I really hope you enjoy yourselves!

It’s been a relentless start to the year but

satisfying none the less, so why are we sitting

here in Ely Cathedral raising money for a

charity called Grief Encounter…?

Firstly, I wanted to run the London Marathon.

Over the last 15 months I have dramatically

changed my lifestyle, I returned back into full

time work from being self-employed for 10

years and started revisiting my hobbies and

decided to get myself fit and run again, I have

been severely bitten by the running bug and

have to date completed 6 half marathons in the

last 12 months and even named the family pup

Mo after Mo Farah!!!

I wanted to run for a charity that was close

to me and affected my life in some way and

Grief Encounter is the correct fit. Kevin, who

is one of the founding patrons of the charity

has endured so much since 2002 that I think

everyone in the room tonight will have been

touched and aware of the tragedy so close to

home. My family also suffered an unexpected

shock nearly 8 years ago when my mother-in-

law tragically lost her life two weeks before we

were due to get married, my wife lost her best

friend and everything changed, that is when I

saw what grief can really do to people’s lives.

Once I had found my charity next came my

fundraising I wanted to do something that was

a piece of me and what you see in front you is-

great hospitality and good food. The venue was

next I needed a stunning venue that people

would be in awe of – I certainly have that.

So I had my concept, my charity and all I

needed now was punters, I put the tickets

on sale and within 36 hours the tickets were

gone (although many people dropped out we

soon refilled them) it was amazing and truly

overwhelming.

I have given this event everything I have got

and called on all my experience and contacts

that I have built up over the last 10 years, every

single supplier is either here free of charge or at

hugely discounted rates this night would have

been very different otherwise a huge THANK

YOU to them!

I must mention my main sponsors Jezo’s and

Rose Barn venue hire, two amazing companies

that are both very passionate about what they

do and also very good. I have surrounded

myself with excellent people for this evening

I have run them ragged and massively taken

advantage of their goodwill. I certainly owe

them a drink to say the least! I cannot thank

them enough

Enjoy the night, THANK YOU again and let’s

raise a bucket load of cash for a worthwhile

charity!

Jason Fretwell

P.S. Please use the stars in the centre of the table to write messages of any loved ones that cannot

be here today, and hang it on the centre pieces at the end of the night these will be put together

and buried with the tree on stage (Kindly donated by Sid Bibby Landscape Gardeners).

Many thanks to Rohan Platts who will be

playing throughout the meal. Rohan started

learning harp under Elaine Pamphilon while

at Kings College Choir School in Cambridge

then continued under Daphne Boden while at

Oakham School in Rutland. Rohan graduated

from Homerton College, Cambridge, in 1998.

Whilst under Daphne Boden, Rohan studied

at the Junior Department of the Royal

College of Music and was a member fi rstly

of Cambridgeshire County Youth Orchestra

then the National Youth Orchestra and fi nally

the Northern Junior Philharmonic Orchestra.

During her time with these orchestras Rohan

has performed at many venues in the UK

including the Symphony Hall in Birmingham

and the Albert Hall, and toured several

European countries.

In 1992, Rohan won the harp section of the

Richmond on Thames Music Festival, and in

1994 was awarded the Cambridge City Mayor’s

Trophy, the highest award in the annual

Cambridge Festival of Music, Speech and

Drama. She has since been awarded multiple

Business Achievement Awards by JPC and

London and Thames Today in 2002, 2003 and

2004 for Musical Excellence, Wedding Services

and Corporate Hospitality Services. Rohan

has also fi lmed for ITV for a previous series

of Lewis.

Rohan is a prolifi c teacher. She currently

teaches harp across much of the East of

England, both privately and in schools,

performs both in orchestras and solo across

much of the same area and also tutors for a

number of youth orchestras and ensembles.

THE HARP

The harp is always thought of as one of the

most beautiful of instruments, not just for its

soothing sound, but also for its great visual

appeal. A harp at a function lends an air of

relaxed refi nement.

The harp is a very practical instrument. It is

portable, thus lending itself to venues without

a piano, or venues that are slightly diff erent.

It is loud enough to create an atmosphere

without being intrusive.
