COMMOTION OVER RHINO TRANSLOCATION

The strong position of the minister of environmental affairs, Edna Mole-wa, in favour of the translocation of rhinos from the Kruger NationalPark, enjoys wide support from the most important role-players in thegame industry. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is of the opinionthat such a strategy should go hand in hand with proper biological man-agement and the necessary attention to security and monitoring.

Prof Wouter van Hoven, retired head of the Centre for Wildlife Man-agement at the University of Pretoria, is convinced that rhinos on smallerprivate properties in a more protected environment will be able to breedat a faster rate than being poached.

Wiaan van der Linde, vice-president of Wildlife Ranching SA (WRSA)and one of the game ranchers involved in the translocation plans, is out-raged by the fact that the names of game ranchers involved in thescheme had been announced in the media in a very irresponsible man-ner, thereby exposing the relocated rhinos, game-ranch owners and theirstaff to great risks. He said that the entire transaction was subject to aprocess of transparency with experts from SANParks who, amongstother things, investigated security measures on these ranches. As aresult of infighting the matter has now come to public attention, resultingin media reports and adverse consequences.

It is a pity that serious efforts by responsible role-players to find asolution to this pressing problem are thwarted by overzealous journal-ism.
