If you havent already discovered the gem of a place called Murphys PubHouse, nestled in the strip mall on the northeast corner of 116th Street and Olio Road, youre in for a surprise! First off, lets just say NO SMOKING. No need to worry about your hair or clothes reeking of smoke when you get home! You cant help but notice the friendly owners, Ryan & Craig Stonebraker, whose philosophy is get to know your customers, embrace the community, and treat your employees like family. They possess a boyish enthusiasm about everything from the food they serve to the customers who visit them. Youll meet these owners once, and theyll remember you the next time you stop in guaranteed or your next meal is on the house. Okay, we exaggerated that a tad!

Weve noticed the customers here are really varied. On one side of this PubHouse youll find the family-friendly restaurant, and on the other side youll find the bar. Its at the bar where we noticed the eclectic clientele. At one table, you might find Lacrosse moms discussing the nights game. At another table, you might find a group of neighbors discussing politics. At the bar, youll find people who came in with others or by themselves. The one thing youll appreciate is being able to hang out at a place where you can hear yourself talk because theres no blaring music. And you might like a place that doesnt make you feel like youre in the middle of a pick-up zone. To you singles out there dont let that keep you awaylol! This place is homey, fun, and comfortable a neighborhood hangout serving up great food and spirits.

On the night we visited, we were bellied up to the bar chatting away with the ever-so-funny bartender Dennis Bowling. If youve ever met Dennis, youre sure to remember him and his signature deep hearty laugh. Hes an outgoing character with a sarcastic flare always ready to engage in conversation. We asked him to fix us up with some specialties, and he served some beautiful martinis that were unforgettable! The first was his Salted Caramel Martini drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces on the inside and outside of the glass rimmed with salt. Drinking this martini, OMG nothing like it! Your top lip tastes the

salt and your bottom one tastes the caramel now give me a drink! DELICIOUSNESS!! Oh wait! Were we not supposed to have dessert first?! Oopsie well how about the next martini, The Drunk Shrimp. Its an appetizer in a glass! The seasoned salted rim welcomes you to a martini that somewhat tastes like a Bloody Mary. The kicker with this martini is the jumbo horseradish-stuffed shrimp skewered along side a jalapeo-stuffed green olive. Wow! This drink really should be classified as an appetizer YUM!

While enjoying our cocktails, we couldnt help but notice the older gentleman sitting next to us in the big red IU jacket. He was watching the #1 Hoosiers on one of the bars many TV screens. As we struck up a conversation with Frank, we learned that his son had just passed away the day prior. Frank didnt want to be home alone. Murphys seemed to be the best place for him that night. He spoke to us about his son and seemed to appreciate being able to share a few stories with strangers. On the other side of us was a girl who had just graduated from Ball State in December. She had just learned that day that she had gotten a job, and she wanted to celebrate!

We also met Gary Politan a 25-year patron of the local Murphys restaurants, enjoying a spinach salad with a beautiful piece of grilled salmon laden with bacon bits and pecans. We wanted to dive right into that salad,



but unfortunately, Gary wasnt offering us even a bite. Fortunately, the luck of the Irish was with us and the owner brought us some food of our own: Char Grilled North Atlantic Salmon, 4 ounces of mmm mmm good with sauted teriyaki veggies. This large appetizer could easily be a no-guilt dinner! Weve never seen a salmon teriyaki appetizer anywhere. It was tender and aky, and we would de nitely get it again. We also tried two of Murphys favorites their Portabella Panini Melt and their Ham and Cheese Pretzel Panini. We had eaten the Portabella Panini here before, and we had already recommended it to friends. Its a grilled wheat panini with seasoned and grilled Portabella

mushrooms, tomato, red onion, and provolone cheese served with a teriyaki Parmesan sauce. The Ham and Cheese Pretzel PaniniWOW, we could have that every day!!

As if the great food, great atmosphere, and great drinks werent enough to get you to try this new establishment, Murphys has a three-day St. Patricks Day event coming to you March 15-17. Would you expect any less from a place called Murphys?!? There will be a huge tent party, beer trucks galore, kid-friendly by day, and adult party by night. A quick little note about us. Weve been friends for twelve years. Our families have traveled together and spent holidays together. Lets Hear It for the Girls!The long-established boys basketball program at LN is accustomed to a high level of attention and hype. Now, LN has another basketball team to cheer about: The girls! The Lady Wildcats won the division title this season (7-0 in conference play) as well as the Marion County Championship. It is the first time in school history that both those titles were celebrated in the same season.

Although this is his first year as the head coach of the Lady Wildcats, Christopher Giffin has been with the LN boys basketball program with Coach Jack Keefer for the last nine years. Giffin grew up on the west side of town and graduated from Ben Davis High School. Before coming to LN, Giffin was a student-manager at Indiana University under Coach Bobby Knight. Giffin then followed Knight to Texas Tech where he served on the coaching staff as a graduate assistant. It was an awesome experience to learn under such an amazing coach, said Giffin of Knight.

I have always had a great passion and love for the game itself and, specifically, teaching it and watching and helping young men and women develop. I am competitive and thus enjoy the yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily challenges that putting teams together requires, says Giffin.

Giffins coaching staff shares his passion for the game. His coaches are a diverse group with experiences playing and coaching at the high school, collegiate, and semi-professional levels.

Giffin began his student teaching at Lawrence North in 2002. He instructs Life Skills in the Special Education Department dealing with students who have moderate to severe disabilities. This only adds to his strength of character.

The Lady Wildcats have a strong future as well. Only one of two seniors is able to play. Hannah Farley is out with an injury leaving Mikale Rogers as the lone senior on the court. Farley, in spite of her injuries preventing her to play on the court, is contributing in the locker room, at team meetings, and has been as committed as anyone to the team, commented Giffin. Mikale Rogers has been an incredible leader her senior year, leading by mouth and example, says Giffin.

This leaves a strong support group for Giffin to work with in the coming years. These girls are driven, focused, and apparently rather bright. The team accumulated GPA is 3.5. This statistic makes Giffin most proud. The entire team is made of leaders both on the court and in the classroom, says Giffin.

When asked of the future, Giffins plans for his team are to establish and maintain one of if not THE premier high school girls basketball programs in the state of Indiana that has as its foundation strong academics, strong individual and team character, and winning. And winning is what they are doing, on and off the court.

Perhaps its just one simple accent wall painted a dramatic and exciting color. Maybe a new piece of art will find a new home over your fireplace mantle adding color and spice to your family room. Replacing a worn area rug thats seen better days with a new textured multi-colored area rug might fit the bill perfectly. Guess what? As a personal trainer, a patient of various cycles of physical therapy, and a seeker of knowledge, I have con rmed that there isnt agreement among those who research the core, those who treat the core (therapists), and those who train the core (personal trainers).

Which muscles comprise the core?From what I have gathered in my research (including Wikipedia), many experts agree that major component muscles include the abs, pelvic oor, back, and diaphragm muscles (diagram below). However, the core also recruits many more muscles including the glutes, hamstrings, and shoulders.

Why do I need to know?The most important role of the core is creating stiffness (static stability) by stopping, holding, and controlling motion in the trunk AND then systematically reacting to the force (dynamic movement) created by moving arms and legs.

The core is designed to be a spring to store and recover elastic energy, says Stuart McGill, BPE, MEd, PhD, professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and author of Low Back Disorders: Evidence-based Prevention and Rehabilitation (Human Kinetics, 2007).

Static StrengthThe goal of making the core stiff is to protect the organs and the spinal cord in its most neutral posture neither exed

nor arched. Stiffened, strong cores provide the foundation of stability, balance, and energy transfer for the entire body. Think about standing tall to walk, bracing (tightening) the core pillar muscles to perform a plank exercise (coming in Core- Part 2), or bending down. A great example is a base cheerleader becoming stiff to serve as the foundation of a stunt.

Dynamic StrengthSo a strong core is one which remains stiff when called upon to balance and transfer energy from one part of the body to another in a balanced and systematic sequence. Understand that trunk rotation or movement is often included in transferring energy/force. I cant think of an athlete in motion that doesnt need to be able to transfer energy from his/her arms and legs to kick, throw, plant, tackle, strike, pli, swing, etc., in a sequenced pattern. Everyday housework and yard work are included, by the way. So if there is a weak link during systematic movement, problems may occur (thats a whole other topic).

So how to strengthen your core? To be continued.

One result of last Novembers election is new leadership for the Lawrence City Council. The Geist Community Newsletter met recently with newly-elected Council President Tom Shevlot, 50, and second-term Council Vice President Sherron Freeman, 57, to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the citys 46,000 residents and its government leaders. The following are their responses to the most pressing issues.

Revenue and BudgetingShevlot (R) at-Large Councillor: We need stability from a fiscal perspective

in local government. Local government is funded primarily with property taxes, and the past couple of years have been a challenge. Our priority is to get a handle on projecting revenues accurately. Our primary responsibility is budgetary: getting expenses under control and revenue forecasting. You have to adjust the way you run your organization.

Freeman (D) District 3: Because of property-tax caps, we now have only a set (reduced) amount of money coming into the city. Another drawback is the more than 36,000 property-assessment appeals filed. That money is tied up until those appeals run their course. To me, they should have just left property

taxes alone. The funds would have been there for us to do other things such as a library. We cant jack up fees because we want people and businesses to remain in Lawrence.

Shevlot: If we continue thinking were going to get incremental revenue increases from property taxes, thats unlikely because the last couple years weve gotten less. I have ideas about new revenue sources, but the council is limited in what it can do about them. Ultimately, its the administration that has to execute them. I believe they are moving that way. I cant discuss it yet, but there are two new funding options that would not require more taxes.

Were in conversation about them with the administration.

Public SafetyShevlot: Public safety is more than 70 percent of the citys expenses. Bloomington has only 32,000 residents and more police officers than Lawrence. The same is true for Richmond and Columbus. The challenge is that funding has to be appropriated across all the citys 300 employees. We have to do a better job of creating alternate sources of revenue. We cant do local government as usual anymore because we now have experience with how cities are being funded with reduced property-tax revenue, and its not meeting expenses. There comes a time when you cant cut any more without getting into public safety, so my hope is we can find new funding sources that are sustainable.

Freeman: We want our police officers to have decent patrol cars, but funding for that sort of thing is a challenge with decreasing revenue streams from the property-tax caps. Still, I think the city is doing very well.

Economic DevelopmentFreeman: We need more businesses in Lawrence that are here to stay not the kind that pick up and go after 30 days. Also, the commercial growth at the former Ft. Benjamin Harrison needs to continue. We need locally-owned small businesses to get in there and get stabilized. The more businesses that come to Lawrence, the less taxes will be necessary.

Both Freeman and Shevlot agree that local governance is less about ideology and party affiliation. The public doesnt care about a D or an R they just want to know what youre going to do positive for the city. What are you going to do to push us forward, said Freeman. Shevlot said he is optimistic, but also pragmatic about Lawrences future. Freeman agreed, adding that she and the council

president are, for the most part, on the same page. So much is thrown at us, and the way we complement each other seems to be working.

When the Hay family decided to update the kitchen in their Geist home, they knew they would have to address the kitchen cabinets.

They were kind of a mess, says Sue Hay. I wasnt sure exactly whatbut, I knew something had to be done with the cabinets!

The Hays, who have lived throughout the Midwest and East Coast, enjoy their spacious kitchen which overlooks a

channel of Geist lakes. They recently added new cambria countertops but, still, the plain wood cabinets with out-of-date hardware needed to change.

The Hays collaborated with Lisa (Designs by Lisa)and decided to paint the kitchen cabinets and stain the island a whole new color. Painting your kitchen cabinets is a great way to update your kitchen, says Lisa. "It is an effective way to give your kitchen a new look, and it is done at a fraction of the cost of replacing them with brand new cabinets. Lisa says she custom

mixes the paint to match your kitchen, often focusing on one accent such as the cambria countertops in the case of the Hay family kitchen.

The Hays thought they would lighten and brighten the upper cabinets with old world white paint and a warm gold glaze and do the island in a contrasting espresso nish. Topped off with new brushed nickel hardware, this kitchen would take on a new look in no time. The process starts with the removal of all cabinet doors and drawers and hardware. They are painted off site with

a sprayer for an overall smooth nish.

Then, the frame of the kitchen cabinetry, the nooks, shelves, and the island are all painted on site. The process takes a few days, then the newly-painted cabinet doors are returned to the kitchen where Lisa glazes the doors and drawers by hand on site. Then the new hardware goes on, and this kitchen looks brand new with lighter, brighter cabinets and a darker, warmer island! Austin explains that many new and fun elements have been created to generate an exciting and educational theme for this years event.

We wanted to refresh our annual event with a new theme focused on CELEBRATION, said Austin. This years theme offers new elements of fun that are, indeed, a bit different from past events. We are encouraging our supporters to come dressed in anything that takes them back to the time that brought them to the future!

The Foundations mission is to connect philanthropy and education to provide the resources needed for all children in Lawrence Township schools to excel. The possibilities for our schools are endless, stated Cori Korn, executive director of the Lawrence Township School Foundation. Its such an honor to support such a strong, vibrant school district, Korn added with obvious pride.

Serving as the Honorary Chair is Belzer Middle School Principal Troy Knoderer who has served the district in various roles for 20 years.

Every school in the Lawrence District will create 2 table centerpieces that individually showcase their school. It should be very educational for our guests to come and learn about their wonderful school district, Knoderer said.
