Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology(GIFT)

Steel is the backbone material of the society closely embracing our everyday life. Thus, ferrous technologymust be advanced continually to create the steel that nurtures an affluent, eco-friendly society and tocontinue the sustainable development of modern society. The Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology wasfounded in 2005 as the world’s only fully accredited institute of higher learning offering graduate educationin the field of Steel Science and Technology.

GIFT has a mission to act as a rich source of highly trained young scientists and technologists, not only tofeed the ever growing demands of the steel and steel-related industries, but also to nurture creativity inthis most fascinating materials. GIFT has an international perspective, with both staff and studentswelcomed anywhere in the world, and with no boundaries of research collaborations. The workinglanguage of all staff and students is English.

The Institute is not only located in one of the best university environments in the world, but also benefitsfrom its close proximity to some of the major steel producers in Korea, including POSCO, who hasgenerously funded GIFT in perpetuity.

GIFT will continue to devote its utmost efforts to accomplishing its mission: To nurture the best manpowerin steel technology as the “Steel Academy of Excellence”, and to be the custodian of world steel research.

Note: - If you apply by May 9, 2013 and get admitted, you can

secure POSTECH admission early (June 27, 2013)although your starting date for graduate study is March3, 2014.

- Completed applications must be submitted online by17:00 KST of the deadline date. Any materials sent viapost must be received by the Graduate Admissions andStudent Affairs Office by 17:00 KST of the deadline date.

- Application deadlines are strictly enforced. Yourapplication and all supporting materials, includingrecommendation letters, must be received by thedeadline.

- You will be notified of an admission decisionelectronically, and a letter will be sent to you.

Application Instructions

Eligibility

International applicants must meet all of the followingconditions:1. MS applicants must hold, or expect to hold before

enrollment at POSTECH, a bachelor’s degree. Also, Ph.D.applicants must hold, or expect to hold beforeenrollment at POSTECH, a Master’s degree.

2. Applicants should NOT hold Korean citizenship.(Korean citizens who hold dual citizenship should applyas Korean applicants.)

3. Applicants who satisfy the minimum standards ofEnglish proficiency can apply. For specific informationabout the score and exception, please refer to‘Application Requirements’.

Note:International applicants of Korean origin MUST read theinstructions below.

International applicants of Korean origin MUSTadditionally meet one of the two conditions.

(1) Both of an applicant’s parents are not Koreancitizens.

(2) The applicant must have received his/her entireelementary, junior high, high school, andundergraduate education outside of Korea at thecomparable and equivalent level of those providedin Korea (for MS and MS-Ph.D. Integrated Programapplicants) or, he or she received entire elementary,junior high, high school, and undergraduateeducation outside of Korea and also received amaster’s degree in or outside of Korea at thecomparable and equivalent level provided in Korea(for Ph.D. applicants). But in this case, internationalschools located in Korea are not considered asforeign schools. Applicants of Korean origin whohave completed their entire education (elementary,junior high, high school, and undergraduate) outsideof Korea should submit the Certificate of the factsconcerning the Entry & Exit issued by the KoreanImmigration Office. The certificate should have beenissued recently.

(3) Laboratory Trip, Student Union, and Club ActivitySummer and winter laboratory trips occur annually.Through the trip, lab members promote friendlyrelationships and create nice memories. Also, the GIFTstudent union and various clubs have year-roundactivities such as a welcoming party, GIFT Olympic, etc.Wine class, GIFT futs, Ruder's band, and other clubs areactive in various fields. GIFT provides financial supportsfor the laboratory trips and student activities.

Employment OpportunityGIFT students who are in the 4th semester of theirmaster's or doctoral program are eligible to apply forPOSCO special recruiting. Employed students who pass thePOSCO special recruiting will be paid an additional livingexpense assistance and given benefits as POSCOemployees.

Opportunities for GIFT applicants (1) GIFT Summer/ Winter Internship

Undergraduate students in 3rd and 4th year who areinterested in GIFT are allowed to apply for InternshipProgram to obtain practical experience in steelproduction and processing.

(2) Early Participation Research ProgramAll POSTECH undergraduate students are allowed toapply for this program to participate in researchactivities at a GIFT research lab according to theirresearch interests.

Supports for Student activities(1) Short-term Study abroad Program

All GIFT students are encouraged to participate in theshort-term study abroad program (up to 6 months forMS and 1 year for PhD students). Students canexperience and participate in research projects offerrous technology with global perspective. There isfinancial aid for transportation and housing.

(2) Plant tourGIFT operates a Plant Tour visiting the ferrous industriesevery two years. Visiting POSCO plant, Doosan HeavyIndustries, Hyundai Heavy Industries, etc., students canexperience how ferrous technology is applied in industries.
