Introduction

This guide is going to help you to learn some of the aspects that you need to

prepare yourself for your test. You will answer exercises to practice listening,

reading, writing as well as speaking.

All the topics in this guide are according to the ones that are proposed in the

“Segundo Acercamiento a los programas de Inglés I-IV”.

You will learn vocabulary and expressions that you can use to describe the place

where you are and the things that are around you; you will also practice basic

expressions to mention abilities and actions happening at the moment, your

favorite activities and the ones that you don´t like.

Try to study in a place where you can concentrate, take your time so you can learn

better. If you study hard, you will see all your effort on the exam results. If you find

words that you don´t understand, look up the words in a dictionary. Do your best‼

Unit 1.

Objective. In this unit, you will talk about food and drinks quantities, considering

the ones that are countable or uncountable. You will use some expressions to offer

and ask for drinks and food, as well as some to accept or reject them.

In English, there are countable nouns you can use numbers and plurals for

example: an orange, a car, two bananas, etc.

With uncountable nouns, you can’t use numbers and plurals for example:

water, sugar, meat, etc. (not waters or a water)

To talk about the existence of food and drinks, you use there is and there

are. There is for countable singular nouns and also, uncountable nouns.

There are for countable plural nouns. Examples:

Countable singular: There is an orange in the fridge.

Countable plural: There are two apples in the bag.

Uncountable: There is water in the bottle.

2. Look what is in the fridge. Write sentences using there is and there are, as in

the example. You can also use negative sentences.

How much / how many

3. Look at the picture and fill in the blanks.

To ask about quantities, you use how much and how many and there

is/there are. How much is for uncountable nouns and how many is for

countable. For example:

Uncountable: How much water is there in the bottle?

Countable: How many apples are there in the bag?

You can also use some words to talk about quantities, for example: a kilo, a

pound, a liter, a gallon, a bottle, a jar, a carton, a bag, a bar, a

piece, etc.

To ask for the price, we use How much is…? for singular countable nouns

and uncountable. We use How much are…? for plural countable nouns.

Quantifiers

4. Read the sentences and underline the correct option as in the example.

If you don´t want to mention de exact quantity, there are some words that you

can use. Look at the information below.

A lot: countable and uncountable nouns; in affirmative, negative and

interrogative sentences.

Much: uncountable nouns; in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences.

Many: countable nouns; in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences.

A few: countable nouns; in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences.

- A little: uncountable nouns; in affirmative, negative and interrogative

sentences.

- Any: countable and uncountable nouns; negative and interrogative sentences.

- Some: countable and uncountable nouns; only affirmative sentences.

GRAMMAR

Like or would like

II SPEAKING

1. Describe your usual breakfast. Prepare your description and work it with an

English teacher, you can go to the Mediateca. To see how you are going to be

grade, check the rubric in Appendix 2.

2. Imagine you are at a restaurant, complete the conversation write a word in each

line. Look at the example.

Waiter: Good morning! Can I help you?

Customer : Good morning. I __would like____(1) like two boiled eggs with some

cheese and some bread please.

Waiter: _______________ you ______________(2) ham or sausages?

Customer: I don´t want ____________(3). __________(4) I have some bacon?

We use the verb like to talk about preferences, for example:

I like coffee. I don´t like tea.

We use would like to express what we wish, it could be now, or in the future.

The contraction form is ‘d like.

I’d like a hamburger.

I’d like to go to Cancun next vacation.

We also use would like to offer and ask for food, for example:

Would you like a cup of coffee? No, thank you. I would like a glass of water.

No, thank you. I would not like anything to drink.

III READING

1. Some people want to prepare their favourite dish but they do not have all the

ingredients. Read the following information and complete the shopping list below.

She wants to prepare sushi rolls. She has a lot of sushi rice, many cucumbers and an avocado. She doesn´t have any cheese and she needs an onion and some salmon.

He wants to eat a green salad. He has spinach, lettuce and some vinegar, but he doesn´t have any cheese. He has a tomato, is not much but it helps. He also needs some seeds.

They want to eat spaghetti Bolognese. They have spaghetti, some olive oil, garlic and tomatoes. They need two carrots, some white wine and some fresh Parmesan cheese. They don´t need much meat.

You will use some prepositions of place to talk about where the things are. Also, you will describe what you can find in a neighborhood and give and ask for directions. I. GRAMMAR Prepositions

Prepositions help us to identify where objects or people are towards

others. Pay attention to the following prepositions of place to better

understand their meaning.

bathroom is next to the living room and the other one is next to the kitchen. Upstairs, there are

four bedrooms and a small studio. My bedroom is the biggest one. My daughter’s bedroom is

GRAMMAR

Present continuous/present progressive

If you follow the explanation, you will be able to make sentences using Present

Continuous. Look at the examples:

Right now, John is working in his office. or John is working in his office right now.

Clare and David are watching TV at the moment. or At the moment, Clare and

David are watching TV.

Now, I’m working on an important project. or I’m working on an important project

now.

We use the present continuous to talk

about:

Things that are in progress now. He’s having breakfast in the kitchen.

Temporary situations. We’re staying with friends for a week.

Future arrangements. We’re leaving at 8.30.

Affirm: Person + be 2nd form +

verb-ing

Negative: Person + to be 2nd form,

not + verb-ing

Unit 4

Well done, this is the last unit! You will practice and say the activities you like and

dislike. You will also practice reading comprehension and writing about the

activities you like.

I. GRAMMAR

Like, dislike, love, hate + ing

To talk about the activities you like or dislike you use these verbs: like, dislike

or don’t like, love and hate. After these verbs, the following verb has to be

with ing ending. You have to use the simple present grammar structure.

Examples:

I / you / we / they like listening to music. (affirmative sentence)

She / He hates doing homework. (affirmative sentence)

I / you / we / they don’t like living there. (negative sentence)

She / He doesn’t love eating ice-cream. (negative sentence)

II. READING

seeing them at the park playing with their children.

In the morning I enjoy having coffee with my girlfriend Jane in a cafeteria near the

park. The food here is really delicious and Jane loves eating here, too. When we
