Laudacja o działalności artystycznej i pedagogicznej profesora Gusa Mazzocca w związku z postępowaniem o nada-nie tytułu doktora honoris causa Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie.

Studia artystyczne rozpoczął w University of Connecticut, zakończył zaś w 1970 roku w Rhode Island School of Design, renomowanej uczelni artystycznej.W tym samym roku podejmuje pracę pedagogiczną w Storrs – University of Connecticut. Własną twórczością i dydaktyką zaświadcza tezę o przenikalności odmiennych warsztatów sztuki twórczo łącząc różne jej obszary i technologie.

Professor Stanisław WejmanGraphics Faculty Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków

A Laudatory Appeal for the artistic and educational work of Professor Gus Mazzocca on the occasion of awarding an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.

It is incumbent upon me to have the exceptional honor to participate in supporting the Graphics Faculty Council resolution of 27 October 2006, which aims to present the High Senate with the motion to award Professor Augustus Mazzocca, graphic artist and lecturer at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, USA, with an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Augustus Mazzocca (better known by the name of Gus) was born to an Italian family in Boston in 1940. He began his artistic education at the University of Connecticut, but finished it in 1970 at the Rhode Island School of Design, a renowned arts college. In that same year he took up teaching work in Storrs – at the University of Connecticut. Together with graphic artist John Koller he founded and continues to run a printshop, a universal graphics workshop equipped for graphic tasks of all varieties, including studio graphics, typography, offset printing and artistic bookbinding. This gives the center he runs an interdisciplinary character, where the impossible becomes possible. His own work and teaching bear testimony to his thesis of the interpenetrability of various artistic techniques, through the creative combination of various fields and technologies. Fate made me cross paths with Professor Mazzocca in 1984 and 1985, when we ran graphics courses together in the same univer-sity over the course of a year. We also had the chance to work together in carrying out tasks with various groups of students. I recall the great impression Gus’s dashing, artistic and externally nonchalant temperament made on me then, combined with his profound ability to bring together seemingly incompatible elements, and his utter ease in demonstrating and inspiring students with this ability. Although Gus is a lithography and woodcut virtuoso, he handles his techniques with some brutality. Guided by his now-famous “impatience,” he forces the stubborn material to submit, though in fact this is a masterly freedom to achieve his means of artistic expression. For the past few years he has added digital methods of depicting his thoughts and emotions to his interdisciplinary palette. He describes the human psychological and physical condition in a way that is disarmingly sensual. His work is direct and stripped of all coquetry, it likes to be “unhandsome.” Being an active multi-instrumental musician, he often brings this knowledge to bear in his work as well. The friendship forged in those years bore fruit in Gus’s journeying to Kraków – for the first time in 1988. Later these visits were multiplied, most of them being artistic trips to our academy, which he came to think of as a special place. Sometimes he claims that he was born again in Kraków.

Przekonany przez Gusa, ówczesny dziekan School of Fine Arts w Storrs, nieżyjący już profesor Jerome Birdman wystosował wówczas pierwszy list z propozycją wymiennej współpracy obydwu uczelni do prorektora ASP, profe-sora Juliusza Joniaka i równolegle do Ministerstwa Kultury i Sztuki w Warszawie.Początek zadzierzgnięcia bliższych kontaktów ASP i UConn miał jednak miejsce dopiero rok później w wyniku czego na przestrzeni lat, kilkunastu naszych pedagogów i studentów gościło w Storrs. Podobna zaś ilość osób z Connecticut odwiedzi-ła naszą uczelnię. Wszystko na koszt strony amerykańskiej.Każdy, przyjeżdżający z rekomendacją ASP w Krakowie pedagog, student mógł spokojnie liczyć na nieograniczoną życzli-wość, opiekę i gościnność prof. Gusa Mazzocca.

Now 20 years have passed since the original idea was created to give this informal union of spirits and work a more effective and institutional shape. Having been convinced by Gus – then the Dean of the School of Fine Arts in Storrs – the late Professor Jero-me Birdman drew up the first letter proposing the mutual co-operation of the two institutions to the vice-rector of our academy, Professor Juliusz Joniak, and simultaneously to the Ministry of Culture and Art in Warsaw. The beginning of this establishment of close co-operation between the Kraków academy and UConn took place only a year later, as a result of which over a dozen of our teachers and students have been hosted in Storrs over the years. A similar number of people from Connecticut have visited our academy. All of this has been at the Americans’ cost.Every instructor or student traveling with a recommendation from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków could be sure to count on boundless warmth, care and hospitality from Prof. Gus Mazzocca. It would be difficult today to add up all the exhibits, shows and lectures organized by Gus for his guests from Kraków. Apart from the Atrium University Gallery and the Benton Museum, they have taken place in the cities of New England, at the Kościuszko Foundation in New York, in Florida, and a few other centers. Gus, in turn, has many times presented his work in Kraków and other cities, while the artist teachers from Storrs showed their work at a large collective exhibition that was held at the onetime Academy of Fine Arts Gallery on Bracka Street in 1987. Inci-dentally – this was the first significant showing of American art in Kraków since Martial Law had begun. In 1988 Gus received the statutory award at Kraków’s International Graphics Biennial for his “Love Conquers All” woodcut. He donated the whole of his award, as well as his payment for a portrait rendered for the Jagiellonian University, for the funding of a yearly award for outstanding student work, an award given during the spring exhibition put on by the Graphics Faculty Coun-cil. This award is funded by interest on deposited sums, and is highly prized in student circles. Gus’s many years of efforts to find and assess candidates for the Fulbright Scholarship have allowed a number of people from Poland and the United States to take advantage of this elite opportunity for education. Gus’s trips always mean student workshops, exhibitions of his own work, and designs for new shared undertakings. In his time he has made video documentations of many Cracovian artists of the older generation (K. Srzednicki, J. Panek, J. Stern, M. Wejman). In the years 1998-2000 and 2002 he helped organize the INTERPRINT international student workshops and graphics sympo-sium, first in Maastricht, Holland, and more recently in Storrs, USA – always making sure to invite our instructors and students. During the last edition of INTERPRINT a great review exhibition of Cracovian graphics was held at the Benton Museum, which was very well received. To avoid excessively prolonging this elucidation, I will only state further that in my estimation this sort of friendship that goes beyond professionalism, this ongoing building of bridges to bring us together above the differences that separate our nonetheless diverse cultures, all this is of enormous value and would be hard to overestimate. This is indeed an HONORABLE AFFAIR, or in Latin – HONORIS CAUSA.My conclusion is therefore to award this title to Professor Augustus Mazzocca.

Brał udział w 200 krajowych i międzynarodowych wysta-wach oraz ponad 20 wystawach indywidualnych w Niemczech, Austrii, Wielkiej Brytanii, Polsce, Holandii, Czechach, Meksyku i Stanach Zjednoczonych.

Wśród tych wystaw znalazły się: „Głosy z Krakowa” — Connecticut State University, New Britain, CT; „Współczesne grafiki pol-skie” — Slater Museum, Norwich, CT; „Grafiki z Krakowa” — Mattatuck Community College, Waterbury, CT; „Współczesna polska sztuka graficzna” — Santa Fe Community College, Gainesville, Florida.

He has been co-operating and maintaining friendly relations with Cracovian graphic artists for over twenty years, mainly in the circles of the Academy of Fine Arts, where he has been a valued guest on practically a yearly basis, bringing his lectures and displays of his newest achievements from his home country. In 1988 he funded a yearly prize for outstanding student work, which has become a valuable component of the year-end review of students’ work at the Graphics Department of the Academy of Fine Arts. He writes referrals to the Fulbright scholarship program in support of young Polish and American artists. He has created an invaluable video documentation of works and conversations on art with artists now deceased, such as Jerzy Panek, Konrad Srzednicki, Mieczyslaw Wejman, Wlodzimierz Kunz and others. As a curator, he has organized many Polish print exhibits across the United States, while at his mother institution in Storrs he has set in motion an artistic-educational exchange program between the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Connecti-cut, to which a substantial number of Polish artists owe their being hosted in the United States.

Moja twórczość…„Ciągle używam rysunku jako nośnika do tworzenia luźnych narracji; nośnika, który odzwierciedla ruch, napięcie, walkę i zabawę. Obecnie często łączę przy tworzeniu obrazu różne techniki graficzne, takie jako drzeworyt, sitodruk, druk cyfrowy i collage. Interesuje mnie to malarskie podejście, ponieważ wnosi do obrazu inne elementy i możliwości, często wzmacniając go, ale także wnosząc mile widziany potencjał przypadku.”

Cur-rently, I often combine a variety of print media such as woodcut, screen-print, digital, and collage in constructing an image. This painterly approach is interesting to me as it can bring other elements and possibilities to the image, often reinforcing it but also having the potential for accident and chance, which I welcome.”
