BASKETBALL One last winter sports note - this one on the basketball front- It was announced last week by the Athletic Council that the County Tournament next . year will have sixteen teams com- peting for the title instead of the usual twelve. In addition to the six league champions , and the six runners-up, four at-large teams will be selected for the tournament. The at-large teams will be chosen, by a selection committee consisting of one athletic director from each of the six leagues. The purpose for selecting toe additional four teams is to pro- vide for a sixteen team tourn- ament , without opening-round byes , and to provide incentive for the teams that may have been hurt by early season injuries or poor starts, but who have fin- ished strongly. BASEBALL Deer Park' s baseball team shut out the North Babylon Bulldogs last week 7-0 for their first Opening day victory. Right hander Jim Valenti and freshman south- paw Bob McGurdy combined to hurl the shut out for the vic- tors. McGurdy was particularly impressive as he faced only eleven haters and struck out six , allowed one walk and one base hit - that a single by Mike Baran. Last Saturday the West Islip Lions got off on the winniqg foot as they defeated Amityville 5-1 in a non-league game. The Lions were also triomphant in tennis as they netted a victory over Lindenhurst 3-2. The Babylon Panthers , who opened their season earlier this week, take on visiting Bay Shore in a non-league game today and then visit Connetagiot f or another non-league contest tomorrow. Then next Tuesday April 18 the Panthers open their League TV schedule with a 4:00 PM game slated for Kings Park. Lindy Topples West Islip If you could see through the sea of mud last Friday you would have seen the Lindenhurst Bull- dogs post their first varsity win in a lacrosse game as they de- feated West Islip 5-4 in an over- time thriller in the League I opener for both teams. The Bulldogs , who had lost both of their previous non-league matches came from behind in the final session to tie the score and then went on to defeat the Lions in overtime.
