People often thinkthat Halloween is an American holiday. But in fact,it comes from the Celts who lived in England, Ireland and Wales.No one is sure how old Halloween really is but its probable origins were

backto BC times. In this time, there wasa festival. Its name was Samhainand it celebratedthe start of a New Year.Halloween was their

New Year a door opened betweenthis worldand the Otherworld - a placewheresupernatural spirits, good and bad, lived.

They believed that October 31 was the mostdangerous night in the year. That night, people

were exposedto the entiresupernatural world.

Today, people don t dothe sameasthe old Celts: they don't have a biggood meal before winter and don't leave their houses cold and

lightfor the night, so spirits don't want to live there.

This day, the soulsof deadpeople can come back ifthey finda person to

stay in his or her body. However, wearingscarymasks and costumesto make the spirits go away is an old Celtic tradition.Today, people and especially children like Halloween costume parties.They dress upas witches, vampires and ghosts, but also heroes.

Children in masks go from house to house and when the door opens,they say: Trick or treat!If they don't get sweets, they do somethingbad, for example throweggs at the house.

Typical symbols of the holiday are horror characters: spiders, black cats,

witches and ghosts, but also big orange autumn vegetables:

pumpkins.You can cookexcellent pumpkin soup or bakea pie, and makea lanternfrom the peel.Why pumpkins?No one knows! It's a history mystery! But most probably,

pumpkins replaced turnips, which is the vegetable people used to carveduring the ancient New Year festival.
