direc tion o f kni t ting pattern: This cardigan is knit seamlessly from the
top down. The collar (a band of garter stitch) is knit
first. Next you pick up stitches along the edge of the
collar, then place the stitches from provisional cast-on
onto the LH needle, and knit across them. You then
work the yoke with raglan increases to the underarm.
Last you knit body and sleeves to the cuffs.
collar: the collar is knit sideways.
Using larger needles, CO 10 (10, 12, 12, 14, 14, 14, 14,
14, 16, 16, 16, 16, 18, 18, 20, 20) sts provisionally using
the crochet chain provisional cast-on method.
Setup row (WS): p2, knit to end
Row 1 (RS): knit
Row 2 (WS): p2, knit to end
Work rows 1-2 a total of 39 (46, 49, 52, 49, 49, 49, 59, 57,
62, 59, 60, 58, 58, 64, 66, 70) times; creating the same
number of garter ridges. This is a total of 79 (93, 99,
105, 99, 99, 99, 119, 115, 125, 119, 121, 117, 117, 129,
133, 141) rows worked, including the setup row. Your
final row is a WS row.
yoke: First you will knit across the collar stitches, then
pick up stitches along the edge of the collar (the side
with the 2 stockinette stitches) , and then work across
the live stitches from the provisional cast on. Next you
will set up and begin to increase at four raglan increase
points, and at the neckline.
Next row (RS): knit to last 2 sts, PM, k1, m1, k1
(this is the end of the row) , next, turn work 90 degrees,
and pick up and knit 52 (62, 66, 70, 66, 73, 73, 88, 85, 93,
89, 90, 97, 96, 107, 110, 117) sts along the edge of the
collar (pick up at a rate of 2 (2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 5, 5,
5, 5, 5 ) stitches in every 3 (3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6,
6, 6 ) rows). Finally, undo the provisional cast on, put live
sts onto LH needle, and work across them as follows:
k1, m1, k1, PM, knit to end.
Note: ensure that there are an equal number of sts in the
garter panels at start and end of the row, increase a stitch
if necessary on the next row. [74 (84, 92, 96, 96, 103, 103,
118, 115, 127, 123, 124, 131, 134, 145, 152, 159) sts]
The markers placed on this row simply indicate theedges of the garter panels.

Markers now separate the left garter edge, left front,
left sleeve, back, right sleeve, right front, and right
garter edge. The first and last marker simply indicate
the garter edge, and the other 4 ‘raglan’ markers
indicate the raglan increase points.

body: You will continue neckline shaping until full stitch
count is reached, then work even to the garter hem.
Row 1 (RS): knit to marker, k2, m1, knit to 2 sts before

optional 1-row buttonhole: Knit as
usual to the centre 3 sts of the garter band, then stop.
slip the next st from LH to RH needle, * slip 1 more
st, pass the first slipped st over the second and
off the needles (1 bound off) , repeat from * two
more times (3 sts bound off in total) , then slip the
remaining st from RH back to LH needle. Turn work
and cast on 3 sts. Turn back, and work to end of
row as usual.

sleeves: Make both sleeves the same.
Place held sts back on larger needles (use DPNs for the
smaller sizes, and a 16” circular for the larger sizes, or the
magic loop technique ) . Knit across these sts, then pick
up in the underarm cast on sts in the following manner:
pick up and knit 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6)
sts, place marker for BOR at underarm, then pick up
and knit another 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6)
sts. Knit around the sleeve again, ending at the BOR.
[30 (33, 34, 37, 39, 40, 44, 51, 53, 55, 57, 61, 66, 70, 77,
83, 89) sts]
Knit in rounds until sleeve measures 2 (3, 3, 5, 5, 6, 6,
7, 8, 7, 8, 6, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2) inches from underarm.
Decrease round: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1
Knit 8 (8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 7, 6, 6, 5, 5, 5) rounds.
For child sizes: work one more decrease round.
For adult sizes: continue to decrease every 9th (9th,
9th, 9th, 8th, 7th, 7th, 6th, 6th, 6th) round 4 (4, 5, 5, 7,

All sizes: Knit in rounds until sleeve measures 4.5 (5.5,

Switch to smaller needles for working garter cuff.

Round 2: purl

inches, or total desired length. Bind off all sts loosely.
finishing: Weave in all ends and block sweater.
You can close the front of the cardigan with a brooch,
shawl pin, snaps, or buttons if you worked buttonholes.
