Since our foundation in 1961, we at Itochu Enex have been working in community-based ways all over Ja-pan as the Best Partner for Life and Society. We have been delivering energy and services that are essential for life, with a focus on petroleum products, LP gas, electric power, and cars.

We are in the midst of a rapid change in society and life, and movement towards a new era has begun to take place in many fields. Against this background, we at the Itochu Enex Group have formulated our growth strategy with the keyword “Moving!” at its core, reflecting our determination to respond flexibly to dramatic change without resting on our laurels. Within the framework of this strategy, we are advancing initiatives to achieve our objectives.

Our aim is to contribute widely to society as an essential entity living with customers, by linking diverse ini-tiatives — including the reinforcement of our management bases, expansion of business domains, evolution of organizational infrastructure, and human resource strategy — with the creation of new value demanded in life and society. At the Itochu Enex Group, our main business has been wholesale for many years. Moving forward, we will shift the focus of our various businesses toward the people in local communities, our final consumers, and continue to work as a consumer-oriented energy trading company that caters to customer needs together with distributors and business partners.

Further, we will contribute to a sustainable society by fulfilling our corporate social responsibilities and carrying out activities including environmental initiatives, the development of the next generation, and contri-butions to local communities.

We request that our stakeholders continue to support us and place their hope in us.

Establishment of Itochu Fuel Corporation (1961) Started nationwide expansion of our own brand of service stations, “Chu-Boy”(1997)

Acquired shares of Tokyo Toshi Service Co., Ltd. and entered the heat supply business (2012)

Founded as a fuel trading company

・ Expansion of fuel demand due to rapid economic growth・ Calls for stable energy supply in response to 1970s oil crises・ Rising awareness of the need for disaster preparedness measures

・ Rising environmental awareness due to depletion of energy resources・ Population decline・ Expansion of regional disparities・ Diversifying lifestyle needs

Becoming an energy trading company

Going ENEX Way

Enex Group History

Viewing changes in the social environment as opportunities to deploy the Group’s strengths, the Itochu Enex Group has boldly tackled new challenges. While embarking on changes to our business model centered on the core petroleum and gas businesses, we have restructured our earnings foundation through means such as enter-ing the electric power retail business and the mobility business. Going forward, we will strive to become an ener-gy trading company that supports local communities.

While Japan went through high economic growth and periods of slow growth, such as during the oil crises and the post-bubble era, we consis-tently focused on the stable supply of fuel. As a result, we expanded the number of sales companies to supply energy to a wider range of custom-ers. We also actively developed disaster response stations that serve as regional safety and security infrastructure.

With global warming an issue of concern worldwide, development of new energy sources also gained momentum in Japan. We entered the electric power retail business and are working toward a low-carbon society based on the best mix of energy. As demand for oil falls due to the declining population, increased energy efficiency and the shift toward electric power, we are leveraging our customer base to unify contact with local customers. We are creating various services suited to each region, and will continue to strive to be the company of choice for communities and customers.

The TTS Heat supply plant begins operating in a new Yokohama city government building designed with the maximum environmental consideration. In February 2020, upon the completion of a new Yokohama city government building (32 floors above ground and two underground floors), Tokyo Toshi Service Company (TTS), a Group company, began supplying hot and cold water and electricity to the building as a heat-supply business operator. The plant installed in the new government building combines a high-efficiency heat pump with a large-capacity heat storage tank, a co-generation system,* and other equipment, enabling it to respond flexibly and efficiently to changes in energy use, save energy, and reduce environmental impact. It also reduc-es peak power consumption and is compatible with demand response programs. This project makes an expansion for TTS, which has been operating heat supply businesses, mainly in Tokyo, into supplying heat to the Kitanakadori South District of Yokohama, including the new city government building. This district is the 19th new supply area for TTS, and the plant is its first heat and electricity supply plant for air conditioning.*An energy supply system that generates electricity and heat simultaneously to improve total energy efficiency

Putting our Corporate Philosophy into practice beyond the boundaries between businesses Social contribution activities for people and local communitiesAt the Itochu Enex Group, we engage in various social contribution activities under the Corporate Philosophy of “The Best Partner for Life and Society — with Energy, with the Car, with the Home” to contribute to enriching lives in local communities and realizing the sustainable development of society.

External evaluation of our corporate value

Actively promoting work-style reform, aiming for further improve-ments in the quality of health and productivity managementSince November 2016, we have been pro-moting the ENEX EARLY BIRD work-style re-form, aiming to be a better company where employees can gain job satisfaction and of which they can boast to their families and society. We are pursuing a number of initia-tives to prevent excessive working hours, improve the health of employees, and im-prove the quality of work.

Developing global human resources to promote diversity internationally

In April 2018, we introduced a new overseas train-ing program, which is provided mainly to young employees. It is aimed at developing trainees’ lan-guage skills, cross-cultural skills, and their ability to study and analyze local cultures, business customs, markets, laws, and other aspects of countries over-seas, without being limited to existing business domains, through work experience at companies to which they are dispatched. We will continue to develop global human resources for business man-agement from a medium- to long-term perspective.

Enjoy the Power of Words to nurture the next generationEnjoy the Power of Words is a recital that we began holding in 2013 to encourage and support people affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. This event fosters the spiritual bond be-tween people, mainly through recitals by former television an-nouncers Motoyo Yamane and Masako Shindo. We hold this event in different areas of Japan two times a year in remembrance of the disaster and as a way of nurturing aware-ness of the power of words among children, our future leaders.

Employment of foreign human resourc-es to encourage mutual learning from diverse perspectives and values

At the Itochu Enex Group, we actively promote the employment of foreign employees. We have employed six foreign employees at Enex Fleet Co., Ltd. and three at Itochu Industrial Gas Co., Ltd. Itochu Enex Home-Life Nishi-Nihon Co., Ltd. works with trainees from a Group company in the Philippines. Thus, we learn from one another about diverse perspectives, sensibilities, and values through work.

The new Yokohama city government building features an assembly hall modeled after a ship, which evokes Yokohama’s port city identity. It attracts attention as a low-carbon city government building with maximum consideration given to the environment, with the in-troduction of a co-generation system and utilization of previously unused energy. The first trainees in the new overseas training program, who

adapted to the local culture and people of the countries to which they were sent as they learned many things through experience

In September 2017, we introduced Casual Day, on the Friday of every week. We also proactively support our employees’ sports activities.

“Enjoy the Power of Words” attracts audiences with a va-riety of musical and expres-sive works in addition to the recitals that foster a spiritual bond. At the venues, we also collect donations to support efforts to recover from the disaster.

At IBUKI, people with disabilities grow herbs, leafy vegetables, and other crops in an environment where they can work with vigor and enthusiasm.

We have published a special website on diversity that summarizes our diversity initiatives. In addition, Ms. Motoyo Yamane became our first female director in June 2019.

Since 2017, we have been certified as a White 500 company under the Cer-tified Health and Productivity Manage-ment Organization Recognition Pro-gram. This certification is granted to companies which practice excellent health and productivity management.

We were awarded 3.5 stars by the Nikkei Smart Work Management sur-vey. The goal of this survey is the com-prehensive evaluation of companies which practice Smart Work in each of three pillars: ability to make good use of human resources, ability to inno-vate, and ability to develop the market.

For two consecutive years since FY2018, we were selected as a con-stituent of the JPX-Nikkei Mid and Small Cap Index, which consists of “companies which are highly attrac-tive to investors.”

We redesigned our corporate web-site in August 2019. As a result, our website was selected as one of 173 AAA Websites in the All Japanese Listed Companies' Website Ranking for FY2019.

Expansion of Gas to Liquid (GTL) fuel as an environmental solutionGTL fuel is a diesel replacement fuel. Derived from natural gas, GTL fuel is clean and has limited environmental impact. It is an environ-mentally friendly fuel that produces approx. 8.5% lower CO2 emis-sions than diesel fuel. It may be used in vehicles without license plates, referred to as “off-road vehicles” (including construction ma-chinery, heavy machinery, and forklifts). We began to sell GTL fuel in the Chubu and Kansai areas in 2017. We also started offering it in the Kanto area in 2019. GTL fuel was the first fuel to be registered in the New Technology Information System (NETIS) operated by the Ministry of Land, Infra-structure, Transport and Tourism. In bids for public works projects, contractors who have introduced this fuel are granted extra points, which is another benefit of GTL fuel. In February 2020, Itochu Enex’s GTL fuel was adopted for use in the emergency power generation system of the new Yokohama city government building.

Participation in a project to demonstrate an euglena- derived biojet fuelWe are taking part in a project to demonstrate the first biojet fuel domestically produced in Ja-pan from euglena, an algae. It is being imple-mented by a team of five companies and a city government, with Euglena Co., Ltd. taking the lead.We have expressed our support for GREEN OIL JAPAN, a declaration led by Euglena Co., Ltd. announced upon the completion of the demon-stration plant in October 2018. In 2020, the use of biojet fuel became officially possible in Japan. Aiming for experimental flight, we continue to consider the procurement of biomass materials and the use of biofuels throughout our Group, among other measures.

Actively promoting diversity and aiming to make it a growth driver in the new eraSince our founding in 1961, the effective use of human resources has always been a focus of our management, reflecting our belief that our most important asset is people. The basic policy of our medium-term business plan, Moving 2020 Horizons, includes our human resource strategy for growth, which in-cludes the promotion of diversity. We established the Diversity Promotion Of-fice in April 2019 to be the organization implementing this policy. We are aiming for awareness reform and the creation of a sound climate within the Itochu Enex Group. To achieve this, we are taking initiatives including the con-sideration of better personnel systems and other internal systems and the provision of training to executives.

Promoting the employment of people with disabilities, and aiming for a company where anyone can work with vigor and enthusiasm

We position the employment of people with dis-abilities as a corporate social responsibility. We provide comprehensive support to create an envi-ronment where people with disabilities can work in accordance with their abilities, characteristics, and desires. In May 2019, we introduced IBUKI, a ser-vice supporting the employment of people with disabilities at a dedicated indoor farm operated by Startline Co., Ltd. (head office: Mitaka-shi, Tokyo).

Supporting disaster recovery as a way of contributing to local communities

To support Japan’s medium- and long- term recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, we solicit donations from employ-ees of the Itochu Enex Group every month. After the July 2018 Japan floods, we supported recovery efforts through monetary donations from the company and employees. Our employees also went to the affected areas and helped our business part-ners with their recovery efforts.
