Want A Healthy Wallet? • Open drapes and blinds during the day instead of
turning on lamps.
• Reduce hot water use by taking shorter showers.
• Air-dry dishes instead of using the dishwasher’s drying cycle.
• Match the size of your pot/pan to the size of the burner.
• Close closet doors to reduce heating and cooling costs.
• Use the microwave instead of the range; it consumes half the power.
• Plant a deciduous tree on the south, west, or east side of your home. Once mature, it will shade your roof and cut cooling costs by up to 30%.

10 Reasons to Eat Local 1. Eating local is good for the local economy. A dollar spent locally generates twice as much income for the local economy. You’re helping to support your own community. 2. Locally grown produce is more nutritious. Produce that you buy in the supermarket is usually transported many miles (an average of 1500 miles) from where it is harvested. It has been cold-stored or in transit for days or even weeks. Many times, the produce you buy from your local farmer’s market has been picked within 24 hours of your purchase. Fresher produce retains more nutrients. The longer the produce is stored, the more nutritional value it loses. 3. Locally grown food tastes better. Think tomato out of the garden versus one out of the produce aisle. 4. Local food is better for air quality and pollution. The transportation required to get foods to the grocery stores produce pollution and environmental damage and can be very costly. Think about how much fuel is used to transport those fruits and vegetables from the other side of the country. 5. Buying locally keeps us in touch with the seasons. When we eat foods that are in season, we are eating them when they are at their peak taste, most plentiful, and least expensive. 6. Buying locally can be a great social and learning experience. The farmer who grew the apples he brought to the market likely has a story to tell about it. Children can learn much about where their food comes from by talking to the locals who produced it. 7. Eating local protects us from bioterrorism. Food with less distance to travel has less susceptibility to harmful contamination. 8. Eating locally lends to more variety. When farmers produce foods that aren’t going to travel a long distance, they will have a shorter shelf-life and lower-yield demand. He is free to try small crops of various fruits and vegetables that you would probably not find in a large grocery store. Supermarkets offer more of the produce items that sell most frequently. 9. Eating locally supports better land development and sustainability. We are more likely to keep more of our pastures and farmland if we give farmers a reason to continue cultivating them. 10. Local food is most often less expensive. Because the foods don’t have to travel hundreds or thousands of miles and there is less overhead, the farmer can offer a better price.

Healthy Bodies Need Healthy Teeth
Dental health is very important to an individual’s overall health status. It is important to get children off to the right start and teach them how to take good care of their teeth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit before 12 months of age. By age 3 the average child already has 3 decayed teeth, which is the reason for this recommendation. Untreated cavities in baby teeth can cause pain, and can jeopardize the health of the already-forming adult teeth. Here are a few tips for how to educate your children about the dentist and promote good health. 1. Be positive and honest. When talking to your child about the dentist, use positive language. Don’t say, “It won’t hurt.” Kids probably won’t think of a visit to the dentist as a negative experience unless the issue of pain is discussed. Talk to kids in a positive, honest way and use words they can understand. Remember, dentistry today is easy for children, especially compared to 20 years ago. 2. Don’t transfer your fears about the dentist to your children. Too often adults who fear the dentist will tell horror stories about their own experiences. If you are afraid of the dentist, try not to share your fears with your children. A child who goes to the dentist without any preconceived notions is more likely to have a good experience. 3. Talk about oral health as a routine part of taking care of yourself, just like going to the doctor. Going to the dentist is part of being healthy. Preventative measures taken from a child’s first visit to the dentist will help ensure that the child has healthy teeth and gums for the rest of his or her life. 4. Set a good example. From the time they are toddlers, parents should brush and floss with their children. Kids often imitate the good (and bad) habits of their parents, and if brushing and flossing are activities parents do on a regular basis, children are more likely to continue such good behavior as they grow up. 5. Never threaten children with pulled teeth or other dental procedures. If you are having a hard time getting your kids to brush their teeth, don’t threaten them with frightening dental procedures such as having a tooth pulled. Instead, teach your children why oral health is an important part of overall physical health. 6. Don’t make a big deal out of going to the dentist. Talk about the dentist as something that’s necessary but not a big deal. 7. Let the dentist do the talking. If you don’t feel comfortable explaining what happens at the dentist or you are afraid of the dentist, let the dentist speak to your child. 8. Use other educational materials such as
books and videos. There are many children’s books and videos available to help you teach your kids about the importance of brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist. 9. Bring kids to the dentist early and let them watch you or an older sibling have their teeth cleaned. The earlier you start dental visits, the more comfortable children will feel. This allows the child to see the process and understand that it is not a painful experience. 10. Make a game of brushing. Find ways to make brushing fun for your children. For example, play your child’s favorite song while he is brushing his teeth and tell him that he should brush until the song ends. Games help children to associate positive feelings with brushing, as well as teach children to brush their teeth for at least two minutes.

Shake the Salt Habit The newest Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend
that people limit their sodium intake to less than 2,300
milligrams a day or 1,500 milligrams if they are older than 50,
African American, or have high blood pressure, diabetes, or
kidney disease. Most Americans get at least twice these
amounts. And surprisingly, most of our sodium intake doesn’t
come from the salt shaker but from foods which already have
lots of sodium. This includes canned soups and vegetables,
boxed rice and pasta mixes, frozen meals, lunch meats, and
other processed foods.
In addition to giving the salt shaker the old heave-ho, here are some suggestions for cutting back on sodium, provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute: • Cook from scratch so you know what’s in your food.
• Limit instant foods such as pasta and rice dishes and
instant cereals.
• When you do use packaged or processed foods, choose low
sodium varieties whenever possible.
• Read labels and compare brands. Some are lower in sodium
than others. For example, spaghetti sauce can contain
anywhere from 270-770 milligrams of sodium depending upon the brand.
• At restaurants, ask your server which foods are prepared without added salt and order those items
• Eat more fruits and vegetables. Choose fresh or frozen, without creams or sauces. Fruits and
veggies are not only essentially sodium free, but they contain lots of potassium which can help with
blood pressure control.
• Choose low sodium canned vegetables. Or drain and rinse vegetables to get rid of much
of the sodium.
